For Playwright screenshot comparisons, hide a rotating ad with screenshot-time CSS or mask its element. Hiding removes the ad from the image; masking covers its pixels but leaves a visible overlay. In either case, target the smallest stable ad container so the test still detects changes to surrounding content and layout.
Hide the ad with screenshot-time CSS
Playwright’s visual comparison documentation supports a stylesheet for filtering dynamic or volatile elements during screenshot capture. Use a stable selector for the ad container and apply a narrowly scoped display: none rule only to the screenshot.

Mask the ad when you want its location to remain visible
A mask excludes the ad’s changing pixels from comparison by covering the matched element’s bounding box. The mask overlay remains visible in the resulting screenshot, so this is useful when reviewers should still see that an ad occupies that area.

- Inspect the DOM. Identify the smallest element containing the rotating ad. Prefer a semantic or application-owned selector over a broad positional rectangle when possible.
- Apply the exclusion at screenshot time. This keeps the filtering tied to the visual comparison rather than changing normal page behavior under test.
- Check the result. Review the screenshot and diff to confirm the ad is excluded while nearby content, container dimensions, and meaningful layout remain checked.
- Avoid hiding shared wrappers. A large parent might contain content that should remain part of the comparison.
For an ad inside a cross-origin or otherwise inaccessible frame, the cited documentation does not establish that a page-level selector or stylesheet can reliably reach it. Do not assume the same selector strategy will work; investigate the frame setup separately.

Third-party ignore regions and review workflows
If your team already uses a visual-testing service, its exclusion and review mechanisms may fit your workflow. These are alternatives to consider, not prerequisites for Playwright’s native screenshot styling or masks.

When choosing an approach, weigh how reliably you can target the ad, whether you want it hidden or visibly masked, how much of the image is excluded, and whether your team needs a hosted snapshot-review workflow.

Troubleshoot unexpected diffs
The ad still changes the screenshot
Check that the selector matches the element that actually contains the changing pixels, and confirm the screenshot stylesheet is being applied to the assertion. If the ad is in an inaccessible frame, a page-level selector may not reach it.
The screenshot has a blank gap or loses nearby content
The selected element may be a layout wrapper rather than the ad itself. Narrow the selector to the ad container and inspect a fresh screenshot to make sure surrounding content is still present.

The mask appears in the image
That is expected: Playwright masks cover matched bounding boxes with an overlay. Use screenshot-time CSS instead if the ad should disappear rather than remain visibly marked.
Layout changes are no longer detected near the ad
Reduce the excluded area. Hiding or masking a broad region can conceal meaningful changes along with the rotating creative.
