Use Argos’s data-visual-test attribute to control how a changing DOM element appears in a visual comparison: set it to transparent to hide its content but preserve its space, blackout to mask its pixels while retaining the region, or removed to remove it from layout. Before masking, consider making the test deterministic with a fixed date, seeded data, or stable sorting; that keeps more meaningful visual coverage.
Choose the right way to handle a changing element
| Situation | First approach | Argos handling if needed |
|---|---|---|
| A date, clock, avatar, or changing text should not be compared, but its geometry matters. | Freeze the clock or test date if possible. | Use data-visual-test="transparent" to hide visible content and retain its layout space. |
| Pixels in a region are irrelevant, but the region should remain. | Determine whether the source can be made stable. | Use data-visual-test="blackout" to mask the content while leaving the region in place. |
| An element itself creates unwanted layout shifts. | Stabilize or disable its behavior in the test environment. | Use data-visual-test="removed" to remove it from the rendered layout. |
| Random or inconsistent content changes between runs. | Use a fixed dataset or seed and deterministic ordering. | If stable fixtures are impractical, hide only the unstable area while preserving layout where possible. |
| A fixed, non-DOM rectangle is noisy, such as a mobile status bar. | Stabilize or hide it at capture time if the test environment allows. | Consider a coordinate mask, provided the same rectangle is consistently irrelevant. |
Argos documents the attribute behaviors and other stabilization options in its screenshot stabilization guidance and visual testing documentation. Keep any ignored area as narrow as possible: hidden pixels no longer provide coverage for meaningful changes.

Apply a DOM attribute to a dynamic element
Add the attribute to the element whose content should not affect the comparison. For example, to ignore a changing clock while still checking that its container occupies the right space:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →<div id="clock" data-visual-test="transparent">10:42</div>
Replace transparent with blackout when the region should be obscured but remain present, or removed when the element should not occupy space in the rendered result. Choose the behavior that matches what the test is meant to assert; these options do not mean the same thing.

Stabilize the source before hiding it
Masking is a trade-off: it suppresses noise, but it also reduces what the comparison can catch. Prefer deterministic test inputs whenever practical:
- Set a fixed date or clock for tests that render time-sensitive text.
- Use seeded or fixed data rather than random records.
- Sort results deterministically so rows do not move between captures.
- Disable external scripts or embeds in the test environment when they are not part of the behavior under test.
If an external script or iframe is part of the required UI, decide whether to wait for its content to load or inject CSS to hide its interface. Avoid loading an irrelevant third-party script merely to mask the result afterward.

Handle animations and external content carefully
CSS and TSX animations
Argos says CSS animations are automatically paused where applicable. If a CSS animation still creates unstable output, stabilize it before capture. For TSX-driven animation, pause or finish it manually where possible. If the animation changes layout, removed may be more appropriate than transparent, which retains the element’s space.
External scripts and iframes
When third-party content is not under test, the most reliable option is often not to load its script in the test environment. If it must load, wait for the content when it is part of the expected page, or inject CSS to hide its interface when it is not. A hidden but unloaded iframe and a fully rendered iframe are different test conditions; choose intentionally.

Use CSS injection or coordinate masks when attributes do not fit
Argos also documents CSS injection through argosScreenshot and coordinate-based masks for fixed screenshot regions. CSS injection can target UI that you cannot conveniently annotate in the application markup. Coordinate masks can suit stable rectangles with no useful DOM element, but they are tied to screenshot geometry: viewport or layout changes can make a rectangle cover the wrong content.

Check the reference for your installed integration and SDK before copying an API signature; the example should not be assumed to work unchanged across versions. DOM attributes and injected CSS are generally easier to associate with a specific element than a coordinate rectangle.

Argos’s change-ignore control applies to a specific observed change during review. A region mask, by contrast, suppresses comparison coverage for that region on future captures. Argos’s changelog entry dated July 20, 2025 describes the change-ignore behavior: ignoring one reviewed change leaves different changes in that region detectable. Use review-level ignoring for an accepted, specific diff; use a mask only when the underlying pixels are consistently outside the test’s purpose.

Argos’s March 10, 2026 changelog says changes detected as flaky are auto-ignored by default, with the number of repeated detections configurable in project settings. This helps with review workflow, but it does not make an unstable capture reliable when the UI itself is meant to be tested. See the Argos changelog for those dated changes.
Troubleshoot noisy Argos comparisons
- The changing text is hidden but the layout still moves:
transparentpreserves space; it does not stabilize dimensions. Fix the content or layout source, or considerremovedif the element’s presence is the cause and its layout is not under test. - A mask hides something important: narrow the selector or coordinate rectangle. Remove the mask if the content is part of the intended assertion, and stabilize the test input instead.
- An external widget appears intermittently: prevent its script from loading when it is irrelevant. If it is relevant, wait for its content rather than comparing captures at different loading stages.
- An animation differs from run to run: distinguish CSS animation from TSX-driven animation. Argos documents automatic pausing for CSS animations; manually pause or finish TSX animations where possible.
- A coordinate mask covers the wrong area: verify the viewport and page geometry for that capture and confirm the rectangle is still irrelevant. Prefer an element-targeted method if the region moves.
- A code example does not match the installed integration: check the SDK version in the lockfile and consult its version-specific reference before adopting an API signature.
- A flaky change was auto-ignored: treat this as review handling, not proof that the capture is stable. Fix the source of nondeterminism if the UI behavior matters.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page rather than run an Argos visual comparison, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
