On Windows 10 or 11, open Start > Settings > System > About and check Edition, Version and, if needed, OS Build under Windows specifications. If you use a Mac or Linux computer, follow the clearly labeled steps below—the make or appearance of a computer does not by itself tell you which operating system is currently running.
Find your Windows edition and version
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Under Windows specifications, read the Edition and Version. Record OS Build too if a support request asks for it. Microsoft documents this route and other ways to check Windows details in its Windows version guide.
- For a compact dialog, search for
winverfrom Start or open Run and enter it. For fuller system information, runmsinfo32. Microsoft also documentssysteminfo | findstr /B /C:"OS Name" /B /C:"OS Version"in Command Prompt.
Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
In Settings > System > About, look under Device specifications for System type. This is architecture information, not the Windows edition or release. Microsoft states that Windows 11 is 64-bit only; see its 32-bit and 64-bit Windows FAQ.

Check the macOS version on a Mac
- Choose the Apple menu.
- Open System Settings > General > About. Depending on the macOS interface and version, the route may instead appear as About This Mac.
- Read the macOS entry. Click the displayed version number to reveal the exact version. Apple explains the About screen in View About settings on Mac.
For a more detailed technical inventory, open System Report from About. Apple describes that option in Get system information about your Mac.

- Open a terminal.
- Run
cat /etc/os-release. - Read
PRETTY_NAME,NAMEandVERSION_IDto identify the distribution and release. The file may also includeIDandVERSION. The Linux os-release manual documents these identification fields.
On a system using systemd, hostnamectl can show a readable system overview; its availability and output depend on the environment. The hostnamectl manual describes the command. For identifying a Linux distribution release, prefer the distribution values in /etc/os-release over a kernel-only result. Some distributions, including rolling-release distributions, may deliberately omit VERSION_ID.

Know which details to give support
First check what the support form or technician actually requests. Operating-system identity, release or build, and architecture are different details; a kernel version alone does not name a Linux distribution release.
- Windows: Give the edition and version; include OS Build if requested. Include System type only when asked whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Mac: Give the macOS version. Use System Report only if support needs more technical inventory.
- Linux: Give the distribution name and release from
/etc/os-release, rather than a kernel-only string.
If more than one operating system is installed, report the one currently booted. If you are using a virtual machine, identify the guest operating system when the question is about the environment inside that virtual machine.
