Start with the CD’s booklet and packaging, then use MusicBrainz Picard to compare the disc’s table of contents (TOC) with database entries. A TOC match narrows the options; verify the exact edition and track order before applying names to your files. If you no longer have the disc, try an album lookup or audio-fingerprint scan, then check the results manually.
Check the disc packaging first
Look for the soundtrack’s printed track list in the booklet, back cover, tray card, or any insert. Record the track order and, for a multi-disc set, which tracks belong to each disc. Also note identifying details that can distinguish editions:

- Soundtrack and release title
- Artist or composer credits
- Record label and catalog number
- Barcode, country or region, and release date
- Edition and media type
Packaging is especially useful when a database lists several releases with similar titles. Keep the printed order as your reference while checking digital files.
Identify the CD with MusicBrainz Picard
If you have the disc, use an optical drive that can read audio CDs. Picard can read the disc’s TOC—the layout of tracks and their positions—and search for releases with a matching layout. If your computer has no optical drive, a compatible external CD/DVD drive is an option.
#1 Best Overall
- Insert the soundtrack CD and open MusicBrainz Picard.
- Use Picard’s CD lookup to read the disc TOC and retrieve candidate releases.
- Compare the candidates with the disc and packaging before choosing one.
- Check that each release track corresponds to the correct file, review the metadata, and only then save tags.
A MusicBrainz Disc ID links a CD’s TOC to a release listing, but it is not a guaranteed unique identifier for a commercial edition. The ID is based on track frame offsets: different pressings can produce different IDs, and different discs can sometimes share an ID. Treat a match as a lead rather than proof of the edition. See MusicBrainz’s Disc ID explanation.
Verify the exact release before tagging
Compare several identifiers together; a matching soundtrack title alone is not enough. Check the candidate’s country or region, date, label, catalog number, barcode, media type, cover art, number and order of tracks, and track durations against the physical release. MusicBrainz Picard’s guidance is to check that the selected release properly matches the CD before proceeding. Its steps for validating a CD match and reviewing file assignments are in Picard’s “When the CD is available” documentation.

Do not assume that a release with the right title has the right track mapping. Confirm the association one track at a time, particularly if the candidate has a different track count or order.

If Picard finds no correct match
Search manually using the game name and soundtrack or release title, along with the credited artist or composer, label, and catalog number. Compare each result with the packaging and disc rather than selecting the closest title match. Picard supports manual database searches when automatic lookup does not return the right release; see “Retrieving Album Information”.
Rank #3
- Banda sonora original de Final Fantasy VII
- Compositor: Nobuo Uematsu
If the release is not listed, record the printed track list and edition identifiers. You can consider adding the release and its Disc ID to MusicBrainz so it can be found in future lookups. The MusicBrainz guide to adding Disc IDs describes how to submit an unmatched CD and associate its TOC with the correct release.
If you only have ripped files
Picard offers two useful approaches, depending on how the files are arranged:
Rank #4
- Import Game - Japanese Version
- Compatible with US systems (region free)
- Japanese language (other languages may be included)
- Manual and packaging in Japanese language
- Files grouped as an album: use cluster lookup to search for a likely album match.
- Files not grouped as an album: scan audio fingerprints with AcoustID to look for matches.
These methods can suggest a release, but a fingerprint or cluster result does not by itself establish the physical edition or guarantee the track mapping. Check the proposed release against any information you still have—such as a scan of the booklet, label, or catalog number—and review each file before accepting tags. Picard documents these methods in “Retrieving Album Information” and its CD workflow.

One MusicBrainz record for a Japanese Sega Saturn release of The House of the Dead identifies a mixed-mode CD dated 1998-03-26, catalog number GS-9173, and lists tracks including “The House Of The Dead (Advertise),” “Into The Dark (Stage 1 BGM),” and “Name Entry.” It illustrates why checking the specific release matters: the game title alone does not identify a particular CD edition. See the MusicBrainz release record.
