How to Identify Grass Pollen and Tell It Apart from Tree Pollen

Grass pollen is typically spherical, smooth and single-pored, but those clues identify a broad group, not a particular grass species. Compare apertures, texture and special structures, and use season and size only as supporting evidence.

Under a microscope, common grass pollen is typically round, smooth and marked by one pore. That combination can support an identification as grass pollen, but it usually cannot identify the grass species. To distinguish it from tree pollen, compare the grain’s shape, apertures (pores or furrows), surface and any special structures; treat size, season and location as supporting clues rather than proof.

How to examine a pollen grain

  1. Check the image, not its color. The City of Albuquerque’s pollen identification reference presents microscope images with artificial colors. Color in those images is not a diagnostic feature.
  2. Note the overall shape. A roughly spherical grain is compatible with grass pollen, but shape alone does not establish its identity.
  3. Count the apertures. Grass pollen typically has one pore. Multiple pores or furrows can help distinguish some tree-pollen examples.
  4. Inspect the surface and outline. Grass pollen is typically smooth. Look for textures or structures that differ from that pattern, such as the rugulate surface of the Albuquerque elm example or the air bladders of pine pollen.
  5. Use size as a secondary clue. Measure only if the image has a scale or the microscope setup provides one. Size ranges overlap and vary among kinds of pollen.

Grass and tree pollen: useful visual contrasts

The measurements below are examples from the City of Albuquerque’s local reference, not a complete key for tree pollen everywhere. Its examples describe pollen common in the Albuquerque area.

Feature Grass pollen Tree-pollen examples in Albuquerque’s reference
Shape Typically round or spherical Varies; pine’s air bladders change the grain’s outline
Apertures Typically one pore Elm typically has five pores; willow and sycamore have three furrows
Surface Very smooth Elm is rugulate (wrinkled); cottonwood, poplar and aspen are described as round and smooth, with visible cracking and flaking
Size Typically 20–100 µm Elm: not specified in the reference; sycamore: 17–25 µm; willow: average 24 µm; pine: 45–85 µm

These ranges and descriptions come from a municipal reference for Albuquerque, so they should not be treated as universal species limits. A tree grain may share some features with grass pollen: for example, the reference describes cottonwood, poplar and aspen pollen as round and smooth. Use a combination of visible traits rather than one feature.

Why a grass grain usually cannot be identified to species

Grass pollen grains are remarkably similar under ordinary transmitted-light microscopy. A 2025 commentary describes them as generally simple, smooth (psilate) and spherical, with only small differences in surface patterning, exine thickness, pore shape and size. Those subtle distinctions usually do not allow reliable separation of one grass species from another in a casual microscope image.

5Strands Environmental Sensitivity Test for Adults & Kids, 310 Items Tested
  • IDENTIFY WHICH INDOOR & OUTDOOR ITEMS MAY CAUSING YOUR SENSITIVITY SYMPTOMS. This at-home environmental sensitivity test checks if everyday indoor and outdoor elements like dust, grass, trees, and mold, plus indoor cleaning products, fabrics, and chemicals are causing a negative response from the surface of your body. If your body struggles to resonate with these items, symptoms like acne breakouts, headaches, fatigue, and watery eyes can occur.
  • SENSITIVITIES ARE DIFFERENT THAN ALLERGIES. A sensitivity is a mild, non-immune response that develops slowly when your body reacts poorly to exposures within your daily environment. Allergy symptoms are immune-based, immediate, and more severe, often triggering rashes, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and even seizures.
  • EASY 3-STEP AT-HOME TESTING PROCESS. No office visits. 1) Register your sensitivity test on the 5Strands website or mobile app. 2) Collect 10-15 strands of hair, no root required. 3) Send your sample to our lab with the included prepaid mailer. We’ll send your results straight to your inbox and mobile app dashboard within 4 days of receiving your sample.
  • USE YOUR RESULTS TO MANAGE DAILY EXPOSURES. Your at-home sensitivity test sorts each environmental item into 4 severity levels so you know which indoor and outdoor factors to temporarily avoid, continue exposure in moderation, and what doesn’t trigger your symptoms. For example, if pet dander is flagged as a “severe” sensitivity, consider limiting exposure by creating pet-free zones in your home, or using HEPA filters in each room.
  • THE ONLY 3RD-PARTY VALIDATED SENSITIVITY TEST. Independent testing has proven the efficiency and reliability of our hair-based test results. Each hair sample is analyzed twice in our certified U.S. based laboratory for accuracy and consistency. Our accessible at-home testing is trusted by holistic health experts worldwide, and we’ve helped over 345,000 people and their pets discover their intolerances, sensitivities, and imbalances.

Specialized analysis can examine measurements such as grain length and width, pore diameter, annulus width and high-resolution surface ornamentation. A 2013 study assessed 240 specimens from 12 grass species using morphological features. That kind of work does not mean that a generic round, single-pored grain can be assigned confidently to a species by ordinary visual inspection.

Visual identification combines grain number, size, shape, surface structures and internal detail. Depending on the sample and method, an identification may be limited to a family or order; genus is more common, while species-level identification is occasional. If the available evidence is only a smooth spherical grain with one pore, describe it as consistent with grass pollen rather than naming a species.

How season and location can help—and where they cannot

Season can make one source more plausible, but it cannot identify a microscope slide. MedlinePlus says most trees produce pollen in spring and grasses usually produce it in late spring and summer. Timing varies with region, species and weather. NIEHS notes that grass pollen types are regional as well as seasonal, and that levels can be affected by temperature, time of day and rain. Tree pollen can also travel miles from its source.

NIEHS lists Bermuda grass, Johnson grass, Kentucky bluegrass, orchard grass, sweet vernal grass and Timothy grass among common allergenic grasses. This is useful allergy context, not a visual key for distinguishing those species under an ordinary microscope. Local pollen calendars and nearby flowering plants can support an identification hypothesis, but morphology must carry the microscopic identification.

When to stop at a broader identification

  • One pore, smooth surface, spherical shape: compatible with grass pollen, but not enough to name a grass species.
  • Several distinct furrows or pores: compare against a local reference; Albuquerque’s willow and sycamore examples have three furrows, while its elm example typically has five pores.
  • Air bladders or conspicuous surface texture: these may point away from the typical grass pattern; the Albuquerque reference illustrates air bladders in pine and a rugulate surface in elm.
  • Unclear, damaged or incomplete grain: report only the features visible and avoid a more specific label than they support.

For allergy decisions, a microscope image alone is not a substitute for a clinical allergy evaluation. Visual morphology can suggest a broad pollen group, but it may not settle the exact source or explain a person’s symptoms.
