A barcode is a machine-readable pattern that stores information for an optical scanner or image-reading software. A barcode’s location in a window does not, by itself, reveal what the code means: it may be on a letter visible through an envelope window or on a vehicle window for a system specific to its issuer.
What is a barcode?
GS1 defines a barcode as “a machine-readable representation of information using patterns of different widths of bars and spaces.” A scanner or software that reads an image captures the pattern and decodes its information; a person looking at the pattern usually cannot tell what data it represents just from its appearance. GS1’s definition describes both scanner and image-reading methods.

Barcodes act as data carriers. Depending on the code and the system using it, the encoded information may be an identifier or other attributes used for automatic identification and tracking. A barcode does not have one universal meaning independent of that system.

One-dimensional and two-dimensional barcodes
One-dimensional (1D) barcodes encode information in parallel bars and spaces. Two-dimensional (2D) barcodes use a matrix-like pattern, such as a grid of squares. GS1 notes that 2D codes can hold more data than 1D barcodes while occupying less physical space, but the formats are not interchangeable: the relevant scanner or software must be able to read the code type.

Why might a barcode appear in a window?
On a letter visible through an envelope window
In a postal context, a data matrix code may be printed on the letter itself so it shows through a sufficiently large window envelope. Swiss Post’s letter-layout guidance specifies a minimum window size of 100 × 45 mm for the procedure it describes. The address and code need to stay visible as the contents shift, with clear spacing and no unrelated text entering the window area. On a vehicle window
A barcode on car glass could belong to a system used by the vehicle’s owner, a fleet, a facility, or another issuer, but its purpose cannot be established from its position alone. Suggestions in a public discussion have included fleet or rental identification, gate entry, and identifying glass type; those suggestions are anecdotal, not a universal or official explanation. The discussion illustrates the range of guesses, not proof of what a particular vehicle’s code does.

How to identify a particular window barcode
- Establish the context. Determine whether the code is on a letter visible through an envelope window, on vehicle glass, or in another setting.
- Look for the issuer. Check nearby labels, paperwork, or instructions for the organization or system that placed the code.
- Use an appropriate reader if permitted. A compatible scanner or image-reading app may decode the pattern, but the result may still require the issuing system to interpret it.
- Do not infer more than the code establishes. Its presence alone does not prove a person’s identity, permission to enter a site, a vehicle’s history, or the contents of a letter. Respect privacy and access restrictions when scanning or sharing decoded data.
What the window location does—and does not—tell you
For a letter, the code may be positioned so postal processing equipment can read it through the envelope window. For a vehicle, the location tells you only that a code is present on or visible through the glass; the issuer and the system that reads it determine its purpose. Identifying the organization or system is more reliable than guessing from the pattern or placement.
