Do not wait for an encryptor alert. Encryption is often a late-stage action in a broader compromise. The practical hunt starts by working backward from suspicious activity and looking for the access, credential theft, persistence, lateral movement, recovery sabotage and data theft that can precede it. A joint CISA, FBI, NSA and MS-ISAC guide cautions that “A ransomware event may be evidence of a previous, unresolved network compromise.”
This guide gives security operations, incident-response and IT teams a repeatable way to search identity, endpoint, network and cloud evidence, decide which signals deserve escalation, and contain an active intrusion without needlessly destroying evidence.

What pre-encryption ransomware hunting means
Ransomware deployment is an operation, not a single file. An intruder may obtain an initial foothold, steal credentials, establish persistence, disable recovery, move between systems, collect data and only then launch encryption. If your first alert is the encryptor, the attacker may already control multiple accounts and hosts.
Threat hunting therefore asks a wider question: What activity shows that an unauthorized operator is preparing a destructive operation? A suspicious login, a new privileged account, an unusual remote-management executable or a command that deletes shadow copies is not proof by itself. Its value comes from correlation: who performed it, from which device, against which systems, at what time, and what happened immediately before and after.

Start with scope and a time window
Define the systems and identities in scope
List potentially affected users, endpoints, servers, domain controllers, identity providers, VPN and other remote-access paths, cloud accounts, backup infrastructure and business-critical assets. Include systems that do not show an alert but communicate with an affected host.
Work backward from the first credible signal
Choose a suspicious event such as an unusual administrator login, a precursor-malware alert, a new service or an abnormal server-to-server connection. Search backward through the available telemetry instead of treating the first encryptor detection as the start. Extend the window far enough to capture initial access and persistence; the correct duration depends on your retention and the incident, not on a fixed number of days.
Record the initial time range, systems searched, data sources that were unavailable and every decision to widen or narrow the hunt. This prevents analysts from losing the original timeline as new evidence arrives.

Hunt for precursor malware and earlier alerts
Review antivirus, endpoint-detection-and-response (EDR), intrusion-detection and other security alerts for malware that can precede ransomware. The CISA guide gives Bumblebee, Dridex, Emotet, QakBot and Anchor as examples of precursor or “dropper” malware. They are examples, not a complete or current list, so search by behavior and execution chain as well as by name.
- Find alerts that were closed as low risk, quarantined on one host but observed elsewhere, or never investigated.
- Trace the parent process, downloaded file, script interpreter, user context and destination connections for each hit.
- Check whether the same hash, command line, domain, sender or account appears on other endpoints.
- Compare the alert time with later account, service, scheduled-task and network events.
A single blocked file may be harmless; the same file followed by credential access and remote administration is a materially different lead.
Investigate identities and remote access
New accounts and privilege changes
Search Active Directory and identity-provider logs for newly created users, group-membership changes, privilege escalation and recent activity by privileged accounts. Pay attention to accounts created outside the normal help-desk or joiner/mover/leaver process, dormant accounts that suddenly become active and service accounts used interactively.
VPN and other remote logins
Review anomalous VPN-device logins and other remote-access events. Useful fields include account, source address, device identity, authentication method, geolocation supplied by the system, time, duration and actions taken after login. A new location alone is not conclusive: correlate the login with endpoint, VPN and network activity and with the user’s normal schedule.

Look for impossible or implausible sequences, such as one account authenticating from two distant devices within a period shorter than travel would allow, followed by administrative connections to servers. Validate whether a managed device, a jump host or a sanctioned remote-support session explains the activity before declaring compromise.
Find persistence and operator activity
Remote-management and scripting tools
Investigate unexpected remote monitoring and management software, including portable executables that bypass normal installation controls. Review unexpected PowerShell or PsTools use, especially when launched by an unusual parent process, account or workstation. Record the full command line, encoded or downloaded content, target hosts and resulting child processes.
Services, scheduled tasks and software installs
Search for newly created services, scheduled tasks and software installations. Compare each change with approved change tickets, software-distribution records and the system’s baseline. A legitimate deployment should have an owner, package source and expected scope; an isolated installation on a file server at an unusual hour deserves immediate investigation.
Directory enumeration and credential discovery
Look for Active Directory enumeration and LSASS credential-dumping indicators. The CISA guide specifically calls out activity associated with Mimikatz or NTDSutil.exe. Also examine unusual reads of directory databases, broad queries for users and groups, and access to credential stores. Capture the initiating account, process, host and destination rather than relying on a tool name, because attackers can rename binaries and administrators may use the same utilities for legitimate work.
Check whether recovery is being disabled
Ransomware operators commonly try to make restoration harder before encryption. Hunt for anomalous use of Windows utilities that affect backups, shadow copies, disk journaling or boot configuration:
bcdedit.exe, which can alter boot configuration;fsutil.exewithdeletejournal;vssadmin.exefor volume-shadow-copy operations;wbadmin.exefor backup administration;wmic.exewithshadowcopyorshadowstorage.
These commands have legitimate administrative uses. Judge them by account, host, parent process, command arguments, timing, frequency and whether backup jobs or change records explain them. A recovery-related command issued by a newly elevated account and followed by remote connections is a higher-priority chain than the same command from a documented backup server.
Trace lateral movement and unusual network paths
Map endpoint-to-endpoint communications, including server connections, over the hunt window. Identify new or rare connections, especially from user workstations to many servers, from one server to peer servers, or from a host that normally has no administrative traffic.

The CISA Play ransomware advisory says EDR is particularly useful for detecting lateral connections because it can show common and uncommon network connections for each host. Use that view with firewall, VPN, DNS, authentication and network-flow records. For each unusual connection, establish the initiating process, account, protocol, destination, authentication event and whether the connection was repeated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNetwork monitoring can reveal abnormal traversal even when the endpoint tool has limited coverage. It does not by itself prove ransomware: software deployment, vulnerability scanning, backup replication and legitimate administration can create broad connection patterns. Confirm the purpose with system owners and approved schedules.
Look for data theft and cloud-control changes
Outbound transfer and tunneling
Investigate abnormal outbound data volume over any port, tunneling and unexpected use of Rclone, Rsync, web-based file storage, FTP or SFTP. Compare transfer size and timing with the host’s baseline, known backup or replication jobs and the destination’s reputation and ownership. Examine staging directories, archive creation and the accounts that accessed the data.
Large outbound traffic is a lead, not proof of exfiltration. A cloud backup, software update or media workflow can be legitimate; a new archive followed by encrypted outbound sessions from a file server is harder to explain and should be escalated.
Cloud configuration and data-protection changes
Monitor changes to cloud IAM, network-security and data-protection resources. Flag new administrators, policy changes that weaken logging or access controls, disabled protection, altered storage permissions and unfamiliar automation. Where your platform supports it, automate detection of risky changes and route alerts for human validation or an approved response.
Build the evidence picture with baselines and retained logs
Hunting quality depends on what was recorded before the incident. Establish normal host, identity, network and cloud behavior so that “unusual” has a measurable meaning. Baselines can include normal administrator workstations, service-account behavior, common host-to-host connections, scheduled backup windows, expected PowerShell publishers and typical outbound volumes.
Centralize logs so analysts can search related events without manually joining exports. Retain and back up critical-system logs for a minimum of one year if possible, as recommended by the joint CISA, FBI, NSA and MS-ISAC guide. Protect the log store from the same administrative compromise you are investigating, restrict deletion rights and monitor changes to collection.

At minimum, preserve timestamps with a consistent time source, user and device identifiers, source and destination, process and command-line details where available, authentication results, configuration changes and data-transfer metadata. Document gaps explicitly; an absence of a log is not evidence that an action did not occur.
Correlate signals instead of chasing isolated alerts
A practical correlation chain might look like this:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A precursor-malware alert appears on a workstation.
- The same user authenticates through VPN from an unusual device.
- A new service or scheduled task is created on a server.
- The account enumerates directory objects or accesses credential stores.
- The server makes rare connections to several peers.
- Shadow-copy or backup utilities run outside the backup window.
- Data is compressed and transferred to an unfamiliar destination.
Each event has benign explanations in isolation. Together, in a tight timeline and involving the same account or infrastructure, they indicate an active compromise that merits incident-response handling. Use a timeline with event time, ingestion time, source, confidence, affected asset, account, action and analyst notes. Preserve original records and hashes when exporting evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate detections and response controls
Map hunts and alerts to the adversary behaviors you need to detect: credential access, persistence, lateral movement, recovery inhibition and exfiltration. The Play advisory recommends testing and validating controls against mapped MITRE ATT&CK behaviors, then tuning people, process and technology based on the results.
Validation should answer practical questions:
- Does the required endpoint, identity, network or cloud telemetry arrive on time?
- Can analysts pivot from an account to its hosts, processes and connections?
- Are legitimate backup, deployment and administration workflows separated from suspicious variants?
- Who is authorized to isolate a host, disable an account or block a destination?
- Can the team recover if an attacker tampers with a log source?
Exercise the workflow with approved simulations and document what was visible, what was missed and how long each handoff took. Do not treat a passing tabletop or a single alert as proof that every ransomware path is covered.
What to do when compromise appears active
Coordinate isolation
Follow the incident-response plan and involve the incident-response lead, security operations, IT, legal and relevant business owners. CISA recommends coordinated isolation and out-of-band communications. Assume that an intruder may monitor organizational email, chat or shared documents; use an approved communication path that is not dependent on potentially compromised systems.

Capture relevant logs, volatile data and system context according to your procedures. Do not power down a system reflexively: CISA warns that powering down can destroy volatile evidence and says it should be done only when network isolation or disconnecting affected hosts is not possible. If encryption is imminent and isolation cannot be achieved safely, the incident-response lead may direct a different decision; record who authorized it and why.
Best Value
Contain in stages
Prioritize accounts and hosts showing active malicious behavior, protect backup infrastructure and prevent further lateral movement. Disable or reset credentials through a coordinated process, revoke suspicious sessions and restrict remote access as appropriate. Avoid broad changes that erase evidence or interrupt critical services without an owner, scope and rollback plan.
Choosing hunting technology without vendor rankings
No single product supplies every signal. Evaluate the capability that fits your environment and staffing rather than a brand name.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Telemetry coverage | Does it collect the endpoint, identity, network and cloud events required by the hunt? |
| Correlation and retention | Can analysts search related events across systems and retain critical logs long enough? |
| Behavioral visibility | Can it expose unusual host connections, lateral movement, recovery changes and suspicious account behavior? |
| Baselines and alert quality | Can teams establish normal activity and tune alerts to useful anomalies? |
| Operational fit | Can available staff triage and act on the signals during an incident? |
| Validation | Can detections and response steps be exercised against relevant adversary behaviors? |
Endpoint detection, IDS or network monitoring and centralized log management/SIEM commonly form the evidence foundation. CISA’s “Use Logging on Business Systems” page names Logging Made Easy and Malcolm as no-cost resources for collecting and reviewing logs. Check their current availability, supported data sources and your organization’s requirements before deployment; no tool removes the need for baselines, trained analysts and an incident-response process.
A concise hunt checklist
- Define affected identities, endpoints, servers, remote-access paths, cloud accounts and critical assets.
- Set a backward-looking time window from the earliest credible suspicious event.
- Review precursor-malware and earlier antivirus, EDR and IDS alerts.
- Check new accounts, privilege changes, anomalous VPN logins and privileged activity.
- Investigate remote-management tools, PowerShell, PsTools, services, tasks and software installs.
- Search for directory enumeration and credential-dumping indicators.
- Review recovery-inhibition utilities and backup or shadow-copy changes.
- Map unusual host-to-host connections and possible lateral traversal.
- Investigate abnormal outbound volume, tunneling, file-transfer tools and staging.
- Check cloud IAM, network-security and data-protection changes.
- Correlate evidence, preserve original records and document gaps.
- If compromise is active, isolate deliberately, communicate out of band and preserve volatile evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far back should a ransomware hunt look?
Start with the earliest credible suspicious event and work backward far enough to cover likely initial access and persistence. The window depends on your available retention and the incident timeline; it is not a universal fixed period.
Does a shadow-copy deletion command prove ransomware?
No. Backup and system administrators may legitimately use the same Windows utilities. Validate the account, host, parent process, arguments, timing, approved change record and related lateral-movement or credential activity.
Should an apparently compromised computer be powered off immediately?
Not automatically. CISA warns that powering down can destroy volatile evidence. Isolate the host or disconnect it when possible, and let the incident-response lead decide whether shutdown is necessary.
