How to Host the Official Cobblemon Modpack on Fabric (Java Edition Guide)

A practical guide to hosting the official Cobblemon Fabric modpack: choose a supported Minecraft release, install the server package and Fabric components, allocate 2.5–3 GB or more, and keep every client on matching versions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To host Cobblemon on Fabric, install the official Cobblemon Fabric server distribution for a supported Minecraft: Java Edition release, run it with the matching Fabric Loader, Fabric API and Cobblemon files, and give players the identical Minecraft, Fabric and Cobblemon versions. The current official Modrinth listing shows Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 as supported versions, with Fabric available on both client and server.

Cobblemon does not operate an official public server. You either run the server yourself or use a third-party host that can install the exact server package and versions you selected. The procedure below covers both the technical installation and the version discipline that prevents most connection failures.

What you are actually hosting

Cobblemon is an open-source Pokémon mod for Fabric and NeoForge. This guide is specifically for the Fabric edition of the official Cobblemon modpack on Minecraft: Java Edition. It is not a Bedrock, console or vanilla-server procedure.

The official release provides a client modpack and a server package. They are related, but they are not interchangeable uploads: a client profile contains files intended for a player’s game, while the server distribution is arranged for a dedicated Fabric server. The listing states that the server package and client modpack can connect to vanilla Cobblemon servers and clients, but a dedicated installation should still start from the supplied server package rather than guessing which client files belong on the server.

There is no Cobblemon-operated server network. A self-hosted machine, a rented virtual machine or a managed game host is responsible for the hardware, operating system, network access, backups and uptime.

Supported versions and compatibility rules

Choose the Minecraft version before downloading anything. The official Modrinth compatibility listing currently includes Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 for the Cobblemon Fabric pack. Releases change, so treat the version shown on the download page as authoritative when you begin.

Item What must match Evidence or qualification
Minecraft Server and every player use the same Java Edition version selected for the pack. The current official listing shows 1.21.1 and 1.20.1; availability can change with new releases.
Fabric Loader Use the loader recommended for that Minecraft release and the loader expected by the selected pack. The official installation instructions require a recommended Fabric Loader.
Fabric API Install the matching Fabric API build supplied or required by the chosen pack. Fabric API is one of the documented Fabric components.
Cobblemon Use the Cobblemon Fabric version belonging to the same pack release on server and clients. The official instructions identify the Cobblemon Fabric mod as a required component.
Other pack files Do not mix files from different Minecraft versions or unrelated Cobblemon releases. Mixed versions are a common cause of rejected connections and startup errors.

Think of the installation as a single versioned set. Updating only Cobblemon, only Fabric API or only Minecraft can break the set even when the server still starts.

Requirements before installation

  • Minecraft: Java Edition: every player needs the Java Edition release targeted by the selected pack.
  • A server computer or host: this can be a machine at home, a virtual server or a managed provider. It must remain powered and reachable whenever people want to play.
  • Storage and permissions: you need a directory where the server can create a world, configuration files, logs and backups, plus permission to run the supplied launch files.
  • Network access: self-hosting requires the machine’s firewall and upstream network to permit connections. Exact firewall and router steps vary by operating system and provider.
  • A backup location: reserve separate storage for world backups before inviting players or changing versions.

The official modpack maintainers recommend at least 2.5 GB of memory and recommend 3 GB or more. Those figures describe the server allocation, not the total physical RAM in the computer. Leave additional memory for the operating system and other services, and increase the allocation when your world, view distance, player count or extra server-side content needs it. The official pages do not publish a universal player-count or view-distance formula.

Step 1: select and record one release

  1. Open the official Cobblemon Fabric release on Modrinth or CurseForge.
  2. Read the compatibility labels and note the Minecraft version before downloading. The current Modrinth listing identifies 1.21.1 and 1.20.1.
  3. Record the exact Cobblemon pack/release number and the Fabric Loader and Fabric API versions it expects. Keep this note with your server files so players can reproduce the same setup.
  4. Do not begin with “latest” on one website and a differently dated file on another. A server and clients must be built from one coherent release.

If you are joining an existing community, ask for its exact Minecraft and Cobblemon versions first. Installing a newer profile and hoping it will connect is less reliable than matching the community’s recorded release.

  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

Step 2: download the server distribution

On the release page, choose the official server package, not only the client modpack. The server archive is intended to be unpacked into the directory that will hold the dedicated server. Keep the original archive until the installation has started successfully; it is useful for recovery if files are deleted during setup.

Extract the package into a new, dedicated folder. Avoid placing it inside a player’s existing launcher instance, because client configuration and server-generated files have different purposes. Use a path your account can read and write, and avoid changing filenames supplied by the package unless its instructions explicitly tell you to do so.

The downloaded distribution supplies the launch command appropriate to that package. Use that command rather than inventing a generic Java command: arguments and filenames can change between releases and operating systems.

Step 3: install the Fabric server components

The official Cobblemon installation guidance identifies three essential Fabric pieces: the recommended Fabric Loader for the selected Minecraft version, Fabric API and the Cobblemon Fabric mod. The selected official server package may already include some of these files. Check the extracted directory before adding anything, and do not create duplicate or conflicting versions.

  1. Install or retain the recommended Fabric Loader for the Minecraft version you recorded.
  2. Place the matching Fabric API file in the server’s mods folder if it is not already present.
  3. Place the matching Cobblemon Fabric mod in that same mods folder if the server package has not supplied it.
  4. Keep the server-side files from one release together. Remove old Cobblemon or Fabric API jars rather than leaving multiple versions for the loader to choose between.
  5. Compare the resulting server folder with the package’s included instructions before first launch.

Fabric is the mod loader; Fabric API is a dependency used by many Fabric mods; Cobblemon is the gameplay mod. Installing only one or two of them is not a complete Fabric Cobblemon server.

Step 4: allocate memory deliberately

Allocation How to interpret it
2.5 GB Minimum stated by the official Cobblemon modpack maintainers for the server.
3 GB or more Official recommendation for better headroom under normal use.
Above 3 GB Consider when world size, view distance, concurrent players or additional server-side content increases workload; no universal value is published.

Set the memory in the launch method supplied with the server package or in your host’s resource panel. Do not assign every byte of the machine’s RAM to Java: the operating system, file cache and monitoring tools also need memory. Watch the server’s logs and performance after players explore new terrain; raising the allocation is only one possible remedy for lag, and it cannot fix a slow CPU, poor disk performance or network latency.

Step 5: complete the first server start

  1. Run the launch command included with the downloaded server distribution from the server directory.
  2. Allow the first start to create the Minecraft files and world. Read the console output for missing dependencies or an incorrect Minecraft/Fabric version.
  3. When Minecraft requests EULA acceptance, stop the process, review the license, and set the EULA file as required by Minecraft before starting again.
  4. Stop the server cleanly after it reaches a ready state. A clean stop allows world data and region files to finish writing.
  5. Edit server.properties for the gameplay and access choices you need. The exact available keys depend on the Minecraft version; keep a copy of the original file before making changes.
  6. Set operator permissions only for trusted administrators and create a whitelist if the server is private.
  7. Configure scheduled backups before the first group session. Back up the world while the server is stopped, or use a method that produces a consistent snapshot.
  8. Start the server again with the package’s launch command and test locally before distributing the address.

The canonical Cobblemon pages do not prescribe one operating-system command line or one network port. Follow the current Fabric and Minecraft server documentation for your platform, host panel and firewall instead of copying a command intended for another environment.

Step 6: make the server reachable

For a home server, the machine must accept incoming traffic through its local firewall and, where applicable, the router or other upstream gateway. A hosted virtual machine or managed panel normally exposes a connection address through its control panel, but you still need to confirm that the selected Minecraft and Fabric server package is supported.

  • Test from the same machine first, then from another device on the same network.
  • Ask a player outside your home network to test only after local testing succeeds.
  • Share the address privately until the whitelist, operator permissions and backups are working.
  • Never publish administrative credentials or grant operator access simply to solve a connection problem.

If the server console is running but nobody can connect, separate the problem into application, firewall, router/host networking and client-version checks. Changing mods will not repair a blocked network path.

Step 7: install the matching client pack

The official Cobblemon Wiki recommends the Modrinth App for installing the client pack. A player should sign in with a Microsoft account, search for “Cobblemon,” choose the official Cobblemon [Fabric] modpack, install it and launch it from the app’s library.

  • Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
  • Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
  • Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
  1. Install and open the Modrinth App.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java Edition.
  3. Use the search bar and enter Cobblemon.
  4. Select the official Cobblemon [Fabric] modpack, not an unrelated community pack or a NeoForge profile.
  5. Choose the same Minecraft and Cobblemon release recorded for the server.
  6. Install and launch the profile once in single-player so the files finish downloading.
  7. Use the multiplayer screen to enter the server address supplied by the administrator.

Players who use another launcher can reproduce the same files manually, but the decisive requirement is still equality of Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Fabric API, Cobblemon and any additional required mods. A different launcher does not make versions compatible.

Server-and-client matching checklist

  • Same Minecraft: Java Edition version, such as 1.21.1 on both sides.
  • Same Cobblemon release, not merely the same major version.
  • Compatible Fabric Loader and Fabric API versions.
  • Identical required content if the server has additional gameplay or library mods.
  • No stale duplicate jars left in the client’s or server’s mods folder.
  • Both sides using Fabric rather than one side using NeoForge.

The official server package can connect to vanilla Cobblemon clients and servers according to its listing, but that statement does not remove the need to follow the selected release’s dependency requirements. When in doubt, have every player install the official client profile corresponding to the server package.

Self-hosting versus a managed host

Cobblemon itself does not provide an official server. A managed provider can save setup time, while self-hosting gives you direct control. The official Cobblemon pages mention third-party hosting, including BisectHosting, but do not publish current prices or service-level terms; verify those details directly before purchasing.

Decision factor Self-hosted machine Managed host
Upfront and recurring cost You supply hardware, electricity and internet service; recurring cost depends on your existing setup. Usually a recurring rental charge; current prices were not stated by the official Cobblemon sources.
Control Direct access to files, JVM settings, backups, logs and additional mods. Control depends on the provider’s panel, plan and permitted files.
Setup effort You handle Fabric installation, firewall, router access, updates and recovery. The provider may automate installation, but you must confirm it offers the exact pack and version.
Latency Depends on your home upload connection and the players’ distance from it. Depends on the provider’s chosen data-center region and network.
Capacity Bound by your CPU, memory, storage and upload bandwidth. Bound by the plan’s allocated resources and host policies.
Backups and support You design and test your own backup and restore process. Backup frequency, retention and support vary; confirm them before relying on the service.

Whichever route you choose, ask one concrete question before deployment: can it run the official Cobblemon Fabric server package for the exact Minecraft release your players will install?

Updating without breaking the world

  1. Read the new official release notes and confirm its Minecraft version and Fabric requirements.
  2. Tell players which maintenance window and target release you intend to use.
  3. Stop the current server cleanly.
  4. Make a restorable backup of the world, configuration and server files.
  5. Install the new server package in a separate directory when possible, rather than overwriting the known-good installation.
  6. Move or review configuration files deliberately; do not blindly copy old settings over new defaults.
  7. Update every player’s client profile to the same release.
  8. Start the upgraded server, watch the logs for dependency or world-conversion messages, and test with an administrator before reopening access.

Keep the previous server directory and backup until the new release has been tested. If the world fails to load or players receive a version error, stop, restore the backup and return clients to the previously working profile while you investigate.

Troubleshooting common failures

“Incompatible mod set” or a version rejection

Compare the Minecraft version first, then the Cobblemon release, Fabric Loader and Fabric API. Have the affected player select the exact official Fabric profile used by the server. Remove duplicate or older jars and restart both sides.

The server stops during startup

Read the first dependency or loader error in the log rather than the final shutdown line. Check that the server package is being launched from its own directory, that the required Fabric components are in mods, and that no file belongs to a different Minecraft release.

The server starts but is sluggish

Confirm that at least 2.5 GB is allocated and, preferably, that the server has the recommended 3 GB or more. If the allocation is already adequate, examine player count, view distance, world-generation activity, CPU, disk and network conditions. The official pages do not define a guaranteed player capacity, so there is no single memory number that solves every workload.

Players cannot see or reach the server

Test locally, then check the host firewall and any router or provider networking layer. Verify that the address was copied correctly and that the server process is still running. A reachable console does not automatically mean the service is reachable from the internet.

A player installed the wrong Cobblemon profile

Have the player remove or disable the mismatched profile, install the official Cobblemon [Fabric] profile for the server’s Minecraft release, and launch it once before reconnecting. Do not try to repair a Fabric profile by adding random files from a NeoForge pack.
