Yes, one server can host many domains and applications on different ports, but DNS is not what chooses the port. Point every domain’s A or AAAA record to the server’s IP address, then route traffic with the web server. You can expose separate public ports directly (for example, https://example.org:8443) or put a reverse proxy on ports 80 and 443 that selects an internal application by hostname and keeps ports such as 3000, 8080, and 9000 private.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
For public production websites, a reverse proxy is usually the cleaner design: visitors use ordinary HTTPS URLs, certificates are managed at one entry point, and the application ports are not exposed to the internet.

What “different ports” means
A browser connection has several independent pieces: a hostname, an IP address, a transport port, and a protocol such as HTTP or HTTPS. DNS handles only the hostname-to-address part. An A record maps a name to an IPv4 address; an AAAA record maps it to an IPv6 address. Standard DNS records do not say “use TCP port 8080.”
The port is selected after the client reaches the address. A web server process must be listening on that port, and a firewall must allow the connection. The server then uses the request’s hostname (the HTTP Host header, and the TLS server name during HTTPS) to select the matching site configuration.

This creates two valid designs:
- Direct port binding: each site or service listens on its own public port. The non-standard port appears in the URL.
- Reverse proxy: one front-end listener accepts traffic on 80 and 443, chooses a backend by hostname, and forwards the request to an internal port.
Apache describes these arrangements as virtual hosting. IP-based virtual hosting distinguishes an address-and-port combination; name-based virtual hosting distinguishes hostnames after a connection has reached a listening socket. NGINX uses a listen directive for the socket and server_name for hostname selection.
Choose between direct ports and a reverse proxy
Direct public ports
With direct binding, Apache or NGINX listens on a separate port for each site. For example, one domain may use port 80 while another uses 8080. Users must include the port whenever it is not the protocol’s default: http://example.org:8080 or https://example.org:8443.
This approach is useful for an internal dashboard, a test environment, or a low-risk service where a non-standard URL is acceptable. It has fewer routing rules, but every exposed port becomes another firewall and security surface. TLS must also be configured on each public HTTPS service, and some networks block uncommon outbound ports.
Reverse proxy on 80 and 443
A reverse proxy gives the server one conventional public entry point. NGINX or Apache listens on 80 and 443, reads the requested hostname, terminates TLS when appropriate, and forwards the request to a process bound to an internal address such as 127.0.0.1:3000, 127.0.0.1:8080, or 127.0.0.1:9000.
Visitors use https://example.com and https://example.org; they never need to know the backend ports. Applications can remain on loopback or a private network, while the proxy handles certificates, access logging, redirects, and hostname routing.

Decision table
| Consideration | Direct port binding | Reverse proxy on 80/443 |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor URL | Includes :port for every non-standard port |
Conventional https://domain URLs |
| Public exposure | Each selected application port is reachable from the internet | Usually only TCP 80 and 443 are public |
| TLS | Configure certificates on each public service | Centralize TLS at the proxy, or re-encrypt to a backend |
| Configuration | Fewer proxy rules | More routing and certificate configuration |
| Best fit | Testing, internal tools, and simple low-risk services | Public multi-site or multi-application hosting |
Prepare DNS, networking, and certificates
1. Point every hostname to the server
Create an A record for each hostname that should use the server’s public IPv4 address. Add an AAAA record when the server provides IPv6 and the service is configured to accept it. A subdomain such as api.example.com needs its own record (or a CNAME that ultimately resolves to the correct address).
DNS changes are separate from Apache or NGINX configuration. Creating a virtual host does not create DNS entries, and a correctly written server block cannot answer a name that resolves somewhere else. After publishing records, query an authoritative or recursive resolver:
dig +short example.com A
dig +short example.com AAAA
dig +short example.org A
Check that the returned addresses are the server’s addresses before testing the web server. Cached responses can delay visibility according to the record’s TTL.
2. Open only the intended ports
For a reverse-proxy design, allow TCP 80 and 443 in both the host firewall and any cloud or datacenter security group. Keep application ports such as 3000, 8080, and 9000 bound to loopback or a private interface whenever possible. For direct binding, allow each deliberately public port and document why it is exposed.
A service listening only on 127.0.0.1 cannot be reached directly from the internet, which is desirable when the proxy is on the same machine. If the backend is on another private host, allow the proxy’s private address and the backend port through the internal firewall.

3. Put certificates at the TLS termination point
Obtain a certificate covering every HTTPS hostname and install it on the component that accepts the HTTPS connection. In the reverse-proxy design, that is normally NGINX or Apache on port 443. A DNS-only record does not provide encryption by itself; the origin server still needs a certificate and TLS configuration.
With direct HTTPS ports, the service listening on each port must present a certificate whose names cover the requested hostname. Test the exact scheme and port that users will enter; a certificate for one hostname does not make another hostname valid.
Configure Apache for separate public ports
Apache’s direct-port model uses Listen to open sockets and <VirtualHost> blocks to map an address-and-port pair to a site. The following example serves two different domains on one IP:
Listen 80
Listen 8080
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName www.example.com
DocumentRoot /srv/www/example-com
</VirtualHost>
<VirtualHost *:8080>
ServerName www.example.org
DocumentRoot /srv/www/example-org
</VirtualHost>
Create the document roots and ensure the Apache worker can read them. Replace the names and paths with your own values. The configuration says nothing about DNS; both names must already resolve to this server.

- Add the required
Listendirectives and virtual-host blocks to the active Apache configuration. - Check the configuration with your distribution’s Apache validation command (commonly
apachectl configtestorhttpd -t). - Reload Apache rather than stopping it, so existing connections are handled while the new configuration is read.
- Confirm the sockets are open with a local check such as
ss -ltnpand verify that Apache owns ports 80 and 8080. - Test each hostname and port. For an HTTP custom port, use
curl -i -H 'Host: www.example.org' http://SERVER_IP:8080/. A real DNS test is preferable once propagation is complete.
Use an explicit address instead of * in <VirtualHost address:port> when strict separation between multiple local IP addresses is required. Apache treats each distinct IP/port combination as a separate listening context; two blocks cannot both claim the same address and port without a hostname-selection rule.

HTTPS on a non-standard Apache port
If a site must be reached as https://example.org:8443, Apache must listen on 8443, the virtual host must enable TLS, and the firewall must permit that port. The certificate still needs to cover example.org. The port number changes the connection endpoint, not the certificate name.
Configure NGINX as a reverse proxy for multiple applications
NGINX can define multiple server blocks in the HTTP context. Each block listens on the same public port but has a different server_name; its location then proxies to the appropriate backend.
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name example.com;
ssl_certificate /etc/letsencrypt/live/example.com/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/letsencrypt/live/example.com/privkey.pem;
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:3000;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
}
}
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name example.org;
ssl_certificate /etc/letsencrypt/live/example.org/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/letsencrypt/live/example.org/privkey.pem;
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
}
}
The certificate paths above are illustrative. Install real certificates at paths that exist on your server, and make sure the NGINX worker can read them. The backends on ports 3000 and 8080 must be running and speaking HTTP; if a backend expects HTTPS, use the corresponding protocol in proxy_pass.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuild the proxy in a controlled order
- Start each application independently and verify it locally, for example with
curl http://127.0.0.1:3000/. - Bind applications to loopback or a private address instead of the public interface unless direct access is intentional.
- Create one NGINX
serverblock per hostname and point itsproxy_passat the matching backend. - Add an HTTP listener on port 80 that redirects each hostname to HTTPS, or serve plain HTTP deliberately if encryption is not required.
- Run
nginx -tto check syntax and certificate paths. - Reload NGINX with your system service manager, commonly
systemctl reload nginx. - Test with each public hostname. During DNS rollout,
curl --resolve example.com:443:SERVER_IP https://example.com/sends the correct hostname and SNI to the chosen IP without waiting for a resolver cache.
How NGINX chooses a block
NGINX first receives a connection on a particular listening address and port. It then compares the request’s hostname with the server_name values for that socket. If no name matches, NGINX uses the default server for that port. A wrong default block can therefore make a healthy listener appear to serve the wrong website. Define an intentional default and avoid relying on file order.
Keep the proxy and applications reliable
Preserve useful request information
The proxy headers in the example tell an application which hostname the client requested, which address originated the request, and whether the outside connection used HTTP or HTTPS. Applications that generate absolute URLs, enforce secure cookies, or record client addresses should be configured to trust these headers only from your proxy.
Best Value
Separate logs and health checks
Give each virtual host or application an identifiable access-log format or file. When one backend fails, separate logs show whether the request reached the proxy, which hostname was matched, and what upstream response was returned. Add a lightweight health endpoint for each application and monitor it from the server or an internal monitoring system.
Plan restarts and upgrades
Reload configuration after syntax validation. Restarting an application should not require changing DNS or the public listener. Keep a known-good proxy configuration so a failed deployment can be rolled back without taking every domain offline.

Apache and NGINX: which should you use?
| Factor | Apache | NGINX |
|---|---|---|
| Port and host routing | Listen plus <VirtualHost>; supports address/port and hostname-based virtual hosts |
listen plus server_name blocks; unmatched names use a default server |
| Reverse proxy | Available when the proxy modules are enabled and configured | Commonly configured with proxy_pass in a location block |
| Configuration style | Directive and module-oriented; familiar to teams already using Apache hosting | Compact server/location blocks; convenient for many hostname-to-upstream routes |
| Best decision criterion | Your team’s Apache administration and package conventions | Your team’s NGINX administration and package conventions |
Both servers can implement the required routing. Existing operational knowledge, distribution packages, certificate tooling, and the applications’ proxy requirements matter more than a universal performance claim. The documentation for neither server establishes a fixed number of domains that one machine can host.
Troubleshoot in the order the request travels
- NXDOMAIN or an unexpected IP: inspect the authoritative A and AAAA records and correct DNS first. Confirm that an old AAAA record is not sending IPv6 clients to a different machine.
- Timeout or connection refused: verify that the process is listening on the intended address and port with
ss -ltnp. Check the host firewall, upstream security group, and any network ACL. - The wrong website appears: confirm the requested hostname, the URL port, and the
Hostheader. Inspect the default virtual host/server block for that port and remove accidental catch-all rules. - HTTPS certificate warning: ensure the certificate names include the exact hostname, that the certificate is installed on the TLS-terminating listener, and that the client is using the expected port.
- NGINX returns 502 or 504: check that the backend process is running, reachable from the proxy, and using the protocol specified in
proxy_pass. Review the NGINX error log for connection, timeout, or name-resolution details. - Redirect loops or insecure links: make sure the application understands
X-Forwarded-Protoand that its trusted-proxy setting matches your deployment. - Only some users fail: compare IPv4 and IPv6 resolution, test from a second network, and look for a firewall rule that permits one address family but not the other.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Expose only the ports that users genuinely need; prefer 80/443 at the proxy.
- Bind backends to loopback or private interfaces and prevent direct internet access to their administrative endpoints.
- Keep certificates and private keys readable only by the required service account, and renew certificates before expiration.
- Use separate application users, directories, and credentials so one site’s compromise does not automatically grant access to another site’s files.
- Patch the operating system, web server, runtime, and applications independently; a shared server increases the impact of an unpatched component.
- Rate-limit or authenticate administrative paths, and collect logs for failed requests, proxy errors, and unexpected hostnames.
- Define an explicit default server that rejects unknown hostnames instead of exposing a sensitive site.
How many domains can one server host?
There is no universal domain limit published for this setup. The practical ceiling depends on memory, CPU, storage, network bandwidth, TLS handshakes, application processes, log volume, and the operating system’s file-descriptor and connection limits. A static site consumes far fewer resources than a database-backed application, so counting domains alone is not a capacity plan.
Measure the real workloads: watch CPU and memory under peak traffic, track open connections and upstream latency, keep disk space for logs, and set alerts before the server exhausts a resource. Add another server or distribute applications when one machine can no longer provide the required isolation or headroom.
Quick Recap
End-to-end deployment checklist
- List every hostname, application, backend port, and intended public URL.
- Choose direct public ports only when exposing those ports is acceptable; otherwise choose a reverse proxy.
- Publish A records and, when applicable, AAAA records for every hostname.
- Verify DNS answers with
digand remove stale records that point elsewhere. - Start and locally test each backend service.
- Configure Apache
Listen/VirtualHostblocks or NGINXlisten/server_nameblocks. - Install certificates on every TLS listener, normally the reverse proxy on 443.
- Open only the required firewall and security-group ports.
- Validate syntax, reload the web server, and check listening sockets.
- Test each hostname with its intended scheme and port, including an explicit Host/SNI test during DNS propagation.
- Monitor logs, certificates, backend health, and resource usage after launch.
