How to Host Java and Rust Apps in Aspire 13.6

Aspire 13.6 adds preview first-party hosting packages for Java and Rust. Learn which AppHost registration to use, how ports and health checks work, and what publishing supports.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aspire 13.6 lets a C# or TypeScript AppHost coordinate Java and Rust services alongside other application resources. It does not turn Aspire into a Java or Rust runtime, nor does adding a service by itself deploy that service to production. The new first-party Java and Rust hosting packages are preview in 13.6, so check the current package version and API before copying examples.

What Aspire hosts—and what it does not

Aspire’s AppHost describes an application’s resources and their relationships: services, databases, containers, references, and startup dependencies. Aspire can run and observe that topology as a whole while each workload continues to use its own language runtime and build tools. For this setup, author the AppHost in C# or TypeScript; Java and Rust are workloads modeled by it, not alternative AppHost languages. Aspire is not an application framework, cloud provider, or production runtime. Aspire’s overview explains that distinction.

Aspire 13.6.0 was released September 29, 2026. Its release notes introduce Aspire.Hosting.Java and Aspire.Hosting.Rust as prerelease packages. At the time the official references were accessed October 7, 2026, they showed version 13.6.0-preview.1.26479.8; that is a dated example, not a guarantee that it remains the newest build. Prefer aspire add java or aspire add rust, or the package installation method appropriate to your AppHost, and verify the current API documentation.

Install the language tooling your local workflow needs

  • Java: For local execution, install a JDK compatible with the application’s target Java version and ensure java is on PATH. Maven and Gradle projects use their repository’s wrapper (mvnw or gradlew). A prebuilt JAR does not need a build wrapper; a container resource uses the JDK in its image.
  • Rust: Install the Rust toolchain and Cargo 1.71 or later, with Cargo available on PATH. The Rust hosting reference documents rustup as the installation route.

Add a Java service to the AppHost

Choose a Java registration method that matches how the application is built and run. The first-party integration covers framework-aware Spring Boot and Quarkus projects, generic Java executable or JAR applications, and existing Java containers. See the Java hosting reference for current C# and TypeScript API examples.

  • UPGRADED COOLING FAN - The G3 Ultra has upgraded the cooling fan to reduce fan noise and thermals. We are using an upgraded thermal paste as well to help reduce heat on the CPU.

Spring Boot

Use AddSpringBootApp for a Spring Boot project. Aspire detects Maven from pom.xml or Gradle from supported build or settings files, invokes the corresponding project wrapper task, and supplies the chosen HTTP endpoint port in SERVER_PORT. The integration does not force all Spring Boot resources onto one fixed port, so multiple apps can run together.

Do not assume the health route exists just because the resource is Spring Boot. Aspire’s helper does not add /actuator/health; the application must include spring-boot-starter-actuator and expose a matching endpoint before you configure a health check for that path.

Quarkus

Use AddQuarkusApp. The integration runs Maven’s quarkus:dev or Gradle’s quarkusDev task and passes the endpoint port in QUARKUS_HTTP_PORT. The reference documents use of the dev profile and an HTTP host setting of 0.0.0.0 to avoid binding and Host-header issues with Aspire’s endpoint URL.

Other Java applications and containers

Use AddJavaApp for a Java executable or JAR that does not fit the Spring Boot or Quarkus helpers. Use AddJavaContainer when a separate build pipeline or team already produces the container image. Match the registration to how the program receives its port and other configuration; do not assume a framework-specific environment variable applies to a generic Java process.

Add a Cargo-based Rust service

Register the Rust project directory with AddRustApp. The directory is resolved relative to the AppHost, becomes Cargo’s working directory for local execution, and is the image build context when publishing. The Rust hosting reference gives the current API shapes.

For an HTTP service, configure an endpoint environment variable the program actually reads. The documented pattern is WithHttpEndpoint(env: "PORT"); the Rust server must read that value and bind to the supplied port on an address reachable by the other resources. Add a health check only if the application implements the route you configure.

Keep Cargo options separate from program arguments

Cargo’s build and target options are not the same as flags passed to the executable. Configure Cargo through methods such as WithCargoFeatures, WithCargoBinTarget, WithCargoPackage, and WithCargoProfile. Use WithArgs for application arguments after Cargo’s -- separator. This keeps a program flag from accidentally being interpreted as a Cargo option, or vice versa.

Connect services and express readiness

Use resource references to pass connection information through the AppHost model rather than hard-coding another service’s local port. In Rust, for example, WithReference supplies the target resource URL. A dependent resource can use WaitFor so it starts after the referenced resource’s health check succeeds. The same principle applies across the topology: a reference describes the connection, while a health check describes whether a resource is ready for a dependent to use.

Health checks must reflect the application that is actually running. For Spring Boot, a check against /actuator/health works only when Actuator is present and that route is available. For Rust or other Java apps, select a route the service implements; endpoint configuration does not create a health endpoint for you.

Local observability, publishing, and debugging

The integrations are intended to let Java and Rust resources participate in Aspire’s local application model and observability experience. The release notes report dashboard retention limits—not Java or Rust application performance measurements. They list up to 10 completed application runs retained, plus default retention limits of 100,000 console log messages, 100,000 structured log entries, and 100,000 traces. Those capacities say nothing about a service’s throughput, latency, memory use, or build speed; the reviewed release and integration materials publish no Java/Rust hosting benchmarks.

The Java and Rust references document generated multi-stage Dockerfiles for publishing, and release materials describe VS Code debugging support. These are integration capabilities, not a claim that adding a resource to an AppHost deploys it. Where and how an application is deployed depends on the selected Aspire deployment integration or external tooling.

For Java container generation, the 13.6 release notes say the integration uses the project wrapper rather than a machine-global Maven or Gradle installation, rejects paths outside its build context, and runs as a non-root user. For Rust, custom build and runtime images still need compatible ABI and linker support; native dependencies may require image-specific changes. Validate the resulting image for the intended deployment target rather than assuming any existing image will work unchanged.

Preview status and migration from the Community Toolkit

The 13.6 first-party hosting packages are preview, so their APIs may change. The release builds on earlier Community Toolkit work; as Maddy Montaquila, Aspire Principal Product Manager, put it in the September 29, 2026 release blog, “Java and Rust developers have been orchestrating their apps thanks to the Aspire Community Toolkit for a while.” Compare your existing Toolkit registration and configuration with the first-party references when moving over, and verify package versions and method signatures before updating an AppHost.

One concrete difference matters for Rust users: the official documentation says, “The first-party package doesn’t yet include the Community Toolkit integration’s Bacon support.” If a workflow depends on Bacon, account for that capability gap rather than expecting it from the 13.6 first-party package.

Java’s integration also documents JVM options, OpenTelemetry Java agent attachment, development certificate trust, VS Code debugging, and container publishing. These are available integration options; their applicability depends on the app and local configuration. Rust documentation includes OS-specific certificate-trust guidance for HTTPS between local services, so follow the operating-system-specific instructions rather than assuming one trust procedure works everywhere.
