A PS5 can play on an ARK: Survival Ascended server, but it cannot run the persistent dedicated-server process itself. For a private world, rent an ASA server from a host that supports PlayStation 5, or run the dedicated server on a separate PC. What “hosting on PS5” actually means
The PlayStation 5 is the client platform. It runs the game you use to connect, but it does not expose a supported menu that turns the console into a continuously running ASA dedicated server. A dedicated server must remain online independently of your play session, accept incoming connections, save the world, and apply updates and backups. That work belongs either to a game-server provider or to a separately administered computer.
This distinction prevents two common mistakes:
- Local or non-dedicated play: a player hosts a session from the game, but the world depends on that player’s session and is not the same as a persistent dedicated server.
- Dedicated hosting: a separate service or PC runs the server process so the group can connect even when the owner is not playing.
For a private group, renting a server is usually the lowest-friction route. Self-hosting offers more control but requires server administration, networking, updates, storage, and reliable power and internet access.

Choose the right hosting method

Before paying for a hosted plan, confirm all of the following on the provider’s current ASA product page: PlayStation 5 support, the data-center region you need, available player slots, map choices, backup policy, mod support, cancellation terms, and current price. Can PS5, Xbox and PC play together?
Yes. Cross-platform play is available among PC (Steam and Epic), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 when the server permits those platforms. Nitrado’s hosting documentation, published March 18, 2024, describes crossplay-enabled ASA servers and lists those three platform groups.

Do not assume that adding one console automatically allows every platform. The platform selection in the host panel must match the people you intend to invite. If a PC player cannot find the server, check that PC is enabled rather than troubleshooting the console first.
How to rent and configure a private PS5 server
Control-panel wording differs by provider and can change after ASA patches. The following workflow uses the settings commonly exposed by ASA hosts; treat labels as version-sensitive.
- Choose a provider that explicitly lists ASA and PlayStation 5. Select the required region and a player-slot allowance large enough for your group. Review whether automatic backups, mod management, and map changes are included.
- Activate the server and open its control panel. The server may be stopped while you edit settings. Keep the panel account protected with a unique password and multi-factor authentication if offered.
- Set the platform list. Select PS5. Add PC and/or Xbox only when those players should connect. Enable the panel’s crossplay option for a private/custom server. Nitrado says most official and custom servers have crossplay enabled by default, but a private server still needs its effective setting checked.
- Choose the map. Select the ASA map your group wants to play. A map change can create a different world or require a restart, so back up the existing save before changing it.
- Choose a distinctive server name. Use a name your friends can search without confusing it with similarly named unofficial servers. Avoid publishing personal information in the name or description.
- Add a server password. Use a password that is not reused elsewhere. Share it privately; a server name alone is not an access control.
- Set the player limit and game rules. Configure the slot count, PvE or PvP mode, resource and taming rates, administrator controls, and any other options your plan exposes. Record the original values before experimenting so you can restore them.
- Review the mod list before installation. Add only mods that every participating platform can download and run. A PC-only mod can stop PS5 or Xbox players from joining.
- Save the configuration and start or restart the server. Many changes do not take effect until a restart. Wait for the panel to report that the server is running before searching from a console.
- Test one PS5 connection. On the PS5, launch ASA, choose Join Game, search the exact server name, and use the appropriate unofficial/custom-server filters. Enter the password when prompted.
- Add the rest of the group after the test succeeds. If PC or Xbox players are included, have one player from each platform verify that the server appears and that every installed mod is available to that platform.
What to record for your group
- Exact server name and password-sharing method.
- Map, game mode, rates, and enabled platform list.
- Mod names and load order, if the host exposes one.
- Provider region, support contact, backup schedule, and restart procedure.
Keeping this information in one private note makes recovery easier after a migration, password change, or accidental reset.

Connecting from a PS5
The server must be fully started before it is discoverable. On the PS5, use the in-game Join Game screen, enter the server name in the search field, and enable the unofficial or custom-server view if the server is not official. Search results can be delayed after a restart or patch, so wait several minutes before changing multiple settings.
If the server is visible but the password fails, verify capitalization and spaces and ask the administrator to set a new password. If it is not visible at all, check the server’s running status, region, platform list, crossplay setting, and current game version before reinstalling anything.
Mods and cross-platform limits
ASA includes an in-game mod browser for custom maps, creatures, items, and game modes. Studio Wildcard describes this browser as a way to download and play player-created content directly in the game. Nitrado’s documentation cautions that mod support varies by platform: PC generally supports mods more broadly, while console versions can have limitations.

Use this compatibility process:
- List every mod the group wants to use.
- Check the mod’s current platform support, not just its PC availability.
- Confirm that PlayStation 5 and Xbox players can download and run it if those platforms are enabled.
- Install the same compatible set on the server and allow clients to complete downloads before joining.
- Test with a console account before adding a large collection.
Do not treat the launch-period figure of “over 250+ crossplay mods” reported by Nitrado in November 2023 as a current catalog count. The available catalog and compatibility can change with game updates and mod revisions.

Official servers are suitable when your group can accept public access and the operator’s rates, rules, map availability, and uptime. Studio Wildcard announced that new official servers would launch with bonus rates for a period so players could catch up. Nitrado’s PlayStation release coverage reported the addition of official PlayStation ASA servers and custom crossplay choices, including PlayStation-and-Xbox-only configurations.
An official server avoids a hosting bill, but it cannot give your group a private password, owner-selected rates, or complete control over configuration. Progress and availability also follow the official server’s policies rather than your schedule.
Self-hosting on a separate PC
Self-hosting is possible only as a separate-PC or server project; it is not a PS5 console feature. The ARK Official Community Wiki documents dedicated-server operation, CPU guidance, and licensing constraints, but exact requirements and commands depend on the current ASA build and the operating system you choose.

- CPU and memory: reserve capacity for the server process and the operating system, especially as the player count and mod set grow.
- Storage: use reliable storage with room for the installation, world saves, logs, updates, and multiple backups.
- Network: provide stable upstream bandwidth and expose only the ports required by the current server documentation. Keep the machine behind a properly configured firewall.
- Availability: the PC must remain powered and connected whenever players need access. Sleep settings, reboots, and ISP outages can appear to players as server downtime.
- Administration: schedule updates, monitor disk space and logs, rotate backups, and document how to roll back a bad update or mod.
- Licensing and platform rules: follow the current ASA dedicated-server and platform requirements before deployment.
Because the exact command line, port-forwarding recipe, and hardware minimum can change, use the current dedicated-server documentation for your chosen platform instead of copying an old tutorial. Test the server locally, then from an external connection, before inviting the whole group.
Troubleshooting a private PS5 server
The server does not appear in search
- Confirm the process is running and has completed startup.
- Search the exact name and select the unofficial/custom filter.
- Verify that PS5 is enabled in the platform list.
- Check that the server and PS5 are on compatible ASA versions after a patch.
- Wait after a restart; browser listings can take time to repopulate.
PC or Xbox players cannot join
- Make sure the relevant platform is enabled alongside PS5.
- Confirm crossplay is enabled after the latest configuration save.
- Remove or replace mods that are not supported on every enabled platform.
- Have each player update the game and retry after the server restarts.
A mod prevents connection
Stop the server, identify the newest or recently changed mod, and remove it temporarily. Restart and test with a console client. If the connection works, check the mod author’s current platform compatibility and version before reinstalling. Keep a known-good mod set as a rollback point.
Players lose progress or the world resets
Stop making configuration changes until you establish whether the save is present. Check the provider’s backup list or your self-hosted backup directory, note the time of the last good save, and contact the host before restoring anything. A restore can overwrite newer progress, so preserve a copy of the current files when the platform allows it.
Frequent disconnects or lag
Check the selected region, server resource usage, player count, mod load, and host status page. On a self-hosted machine, inspect CPU, memory, storage health, upload bandwidth, firewall logs, and unexpected reboots. Do not assume a higher in-game rate setting will fix a network problem.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a unique panel password and enable multi-factor authentication where available.
- Share the in-game password only with the intended group.
- Back up saves before map, mod, or major configuration changes.
- Keep the server and clients on the same current ASA version.
- Review mods after updates and remove abandoned or incompatible entries.
- Limit administrator privileges to trusted players and keep a record of who has them.
- Set a restart and update window so players know when the world may be unavailable.
- Check storage capacity and backup health rather than assuming a backup exists because the panel displays an option.
