What an eight-player L4D2 server actually changes
The four-player limit belongs to the standard campaign matchmaking setup. Simply inviting a fifth friend to an ordinary lobby does not create another survivor slot. An eight-player game therefore needs a server-side setup that does two things:

- Advertises and starts at least eight player slots.
- Removes or overrides the human-survivor limit used by the normal game rules.
A dedicated server can host the session independently of a player’s in-game lobby. The server operator controls the map, password, network port, administration tools and extensions. The eight-player setting shown in the commonly referenced dedicated-server guide is an example, not a guarantee that every campaign, plugin combination or custom map will behave identically. Test the exact extension versions and campaigns you intend to use.

The instructions below use a self-hosted SRCDS installation. A container should expose the same game port and persist the server’s left4dead2 directory; the configuration and connection methods remain the same.

Prerequisites and network decisions
Choose a host machine
Use a Windows or Linux computer with enough CPU headroom for the game server, stable storage for the server files and a wired or reliable network connection. The host does not need to run the L4D2 client, but it must remain powered on while friends are playing. A spare desktop, virtual machine or cloud instance can work if its provider permits game traffic and gives you control of the required port.
Reserve a local address
Give the host a predictable LAN address, either with a static configuration or a DHCP reservation in your router. In the launch example below, 10.0.0.2 is only an example local address. Substitute the address assigned to your server.
Select and forward a port
Pick an unused Source game port, such as 27020, and use that same port in the server command, router rule and connection address. Forward the chosen game traffic from the router to the host’s LAN address. The exact protocol requirements depend on your router and hosting environment; allow the Source server traffic your environment requires rather than assuming that a port-forward rule created for another game is sufficient.
If players are outside your home network, they need your public address and port. Never publish your administrative password, and do not expose remote administration services unnecessarily.
Install the dedicated files with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is the command-line installer used to obtain and update Valve dedicated-server files. Create a dedicated directory first so that server files, configuration and add-ons are not mixed with a player’s client installation.
Windows example
- Download and extract SteamCMD into a folder such as
C:steamcmd. - Create a destination such as
C:l4d2-server. - Open Command Prompt and run:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:l4d2-server +app_update 222860 validate +quitApp ID 222860 is the Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated-server application. The validate pass checks the downloaded files; omit it during routine updates if you want a faster update cycle. If SteamCMD is not on your system path, run the command from its extracted directory or use the full path to steamcmd.exe.

Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s supported package or Valve’s download, create a non-root account for the service, and run the equivalent command with Linux paths:

./steamcmd.sh +login anonymous +force_install_dir /srv/l4d2-server +app_update 222860 validate +quitRun the server as that unprivileged account. This limits the damage if a server process or extension misbehaves and makes file ownership predictable.
After installation, the important directory is the server’s left4dead2 folder. Do not put server configuration in the client-only Steam installation by mistake; the running srcds process reads the files beneath its own game directory.
Create and protect server.cfg
Create left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. This file is loaded at startup by the +exec server.cfg launch option. Keep the file in a backup location so an update or container rebuild cannot erase your settings.

The three player-limit variables are commonly used by L4D2 extensions, but they are not interchangeable guarantees. The guide that documents eight-player hosting lists l4d_maxplayers, sv_maxplayers, sv_visiblemaxplayers and sv_removehumanlimit among the relevant settings and plugins. Which cvar is honored depends on the extension installed and its version.
For a setup that specifically uses an extension providing the human-limit override, add the setting it documents, for example:
sv_removehumanlimit 1Do not copy that line blindly into an installation without the corresponding plugin. Unknown or unsupported cvars may be ignored, while conflicting plugins can produce a server that advertises eight slots but still refuses a fifth human player. Check the extension’s own configuration and console output after every update.

Use sv_password for the friends-only join password. Keep rcon_password different, long and private; anyone with RCON access can alter the live server. Restrict file and panel access to the people who administer the host.
Install the extensions that remove the human limit
SourceMod and MetaMod are the usual foundation for L4D2 server administration and gameplay extensions. The dedicated-server guide identifies them as the mechanism for administration and server extensions, including player-limit functionality.
- Download versions that explicitly support the current L4D2 dedicated-server build and your operating system.
- Install MetaMod first in the server’s game directory, then install SourceMod according to its directory layout.
- Install one player-limit extension that documents support for eight human survivors. Follow that extension’s required dependencies and configuration file names.
- Restart the server and inspect the startup console for load errors, missing binaries or version warnings.
- Test with two or three players before inviting the full group. Add the remaining players only after the server accepts the first connections and loads a campaign correctly.
Plugin compatibility is the fragile part of this setup. A game update can require a newer loader or extension, and two plugins that both manipulate survivor limits can conflict. Keep a dated copy of the working addons and cfg directories, and change one plugin at a time so you can identify the cause of a failure.
Launch SRCDS with eight slots
From the dedicated-server directory, launch the Source Dedicated Server executable with the game, address, port, player count, configuration file and starting map. The documented pattern is:

Replace 10.0.0.2 with the host’s actual bind address, choose the port you forwarded, and select a map that exists in your installation. +maxplayers 8 tells the server to create eight slots; the extension and cvars are what make those slots usable by human survivors.

Verify the server before inviting everyone
- Watch the startup console until the map finishes loading and the extension status shows no errors.
- Open the server browser and check that the name, map, password state and maximum player count are correct.
- Join locally from the same network first. Confirm that the first player becomes a survivor and that the server does not immediately return to matchmaking.
- Have a second player join from outside the LAN. If local joining works but the external player cannot connect, troubleshoot the firewall, router forwarding or advertised address rather than the player-limit plugin.
- Fill the server gradually. When the fifth through eighth human players join successfully, start a short campaign segment and watch for missing spawns, script errors or severe performance problems.
Eight slots do not guarantee that every campaign is balanced for eight survivors. Custom maps can assume four players, and some scripted events may become trivial, crowded or unstable. Treat a map that loads but behaves incorrectly as a compatibility problem, not proof that the network setup is wrong.

Four reliable ways for friends to connect
1. Force the dedicated server from a lobby
Start a normal lobby, set the server type to Best Available Dedicated, open the developer console and enter the documented command with your address and port:
mm_dedicated_force_servers 203.0.113.25:27020203.0.113.25 is an example public address. Replace it with the public address that actually reaches your forwarded port. This method lets the lobby form first while directing the game to the chosen dedicated server. If the lobby falls back to another server, recheck the command syntax, server visibility and port reachability.
2. Use a Steam Group server
Assign the dedicated server to an appropriate Steam Group configuration and have players select that group-server option when creating or joining the lobby. LAN servers can appear as Steam Group servers automatically, according to the connection documentation. This is convenient for recurring groups, but visibility depends on the server’s Steam registration and network state.
3. Add it in the Steam server browser
Open the Steam server browser, add the server’s public address and port to favorites, and launch L4D2 from the listed entry. Friends can then find the same entry instead of relying on matchmaking. A password-protected server may still appear in the list while requiring the password at connection.
4. Connect directly from the developer console
Enable the developer console in L4D2’s keyboard settings, open it with the configured console key and enter:
connect 203.0.113.25:27020Direct connection is the fastest diagnostic route because it bypasses lobby selection. If it fails, test from outside the host’s LAN; many routers do not support a reliable loopback connection when you use the public address from inside the same network.

Workshop content must exist on the dedicated server, not only in each player’s client. Valve’s update guidance says Workshop campaigns on a dedicated server should be placed in the same location used on the client:
/left4dead2/addons/workshop/Keep each Workshop item in the directory structure created by the server’s download process. Do not flatten files into an unrelated folder, or the server may fail to detect the campaign even though the client has subscribed to it.
Campaigns that were not downloaded from Workshop can still be placed in the server’s left4dead2/addons directory. After adding or removing content, restart the server and verify the map name in the console. Every player must also have a compatible copy or subscription; a server cannot make a missing client asset appear automatically in every case.
Firewall, port and password troubleshooting

Keep an eight-player server maintainable
Separate configuration from disposable files
Back up left4dead2/cfg, left4dead2/addons, Workshop content and your launch script. Record the working versions of MetaMod, SourceMod and the player-limit extension. A clean reinstall is much faster when you can restore known-good configuration instead of reconstructing it from memory.
Update deliberately
Run SteamCMD updates when the group is not playing, then start the server and inspect the console before announcing it as available. If a game update breaks the eight-player behavior, first verify loader and extension compatibility; changing map files or network settings will not fix a binary-version mismatch.
Control access
Use a strong sv_password for private sessions, change it when the group changes, and keep RCON credentials out of chat logs and screen recordings. Grant administrative permissions only to trusted operators. A public server with no password should be treated as a different operating model, with additional moderation and monitoring requirements.

Watch performance
More human survivors mean more player input, weapons, special-infected interactions and script activity. If the server becomes unstable, test a stock campaign with the same plugins, reduce competing extensions and check host CPU, memory and network saturation. Do not assume that increasing the slot count alone caused every lag spike; isolate the map, plugin and network variables one at a time.
When managed hosting is the better choice
Renting a managed L4D2 server can be sensible when no member of the group can leave a machine online, configure a router or maintain SourceMod and MetaMod after updates. A provider normally supplies a persistent address, a control panel and automated restarts, while you configure the password, maps and add-ons.
- Confirm that the plan explicitly supports eight human players rather than only eight advertised slots.
- Check whether SourceMod, MetaMod and custom Workshop campaigns are allowed.
- Verify access to
server.cfg, theaddonsdirectory, logs and backups. - Ask how the provider handles game updates and extension breakage.
- Check the assigned region, latency, cancellation terms and whether the server remains online continuously.
Managed hosting removes much of the maintenance burden but does not make incompatible plugins compatible. You still need to test the exact eight-player extension and campaign combination on the rented instance.
Practical launch checklist
- Dedicated files installed with SteamCMD under a separate server directory.
- Host has a stable LAN or provider address and the chosen game port is reachable.
server.cfgcontains the hostname, private password and validated player-limit settings.- MetaMod, SourceMod and an eight-player-compatible extension load without console errors.
- Launch command includes
+maxplayers 8,+exec server.cfgand a valid map. - Workshop campaigns are under
left4dead2/addons/workshop; other campaigns are underaddons. - At least one local and one external connection test has succeeded.
- The fifth through eighth players can join a test campaign before the group schedules a full session.
- Configuration and add-on folders are backed up before updates.
Once those checks pass, your friends can use the connection method that fits the group: a forced dedicated lobby for normal matchmaking flow, a Steam Group server for repeat sessions, the server browser for discovery, or connect public-address:port for a direct and predictable join.
