How to Host a Web Application: Hosting Options and Setup Steps

A practical guide to choosing web app hosting and deploying safely, from static sites and PaaS to serverless platforms and self-managed VPS servers.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best way to host a web application depends on whether it is static or server-side, how predictable its traffic is, and how much server administration you want to handle. Static hosts are quickest for front-end sites and single-page apps. A platform-as-a-service (PaaS) is usually the fastest choice for an application with a backend. Containers and serverless platforms handle uneven demand, while a virtual private server (VPS) or dedicated server gives you more control at the cost of security and maintenance work.

This guide explains the trade-offs, prepares an application for deployment, and gives practical setup paths for managed hosting and a VPS.

Choose the hosting model before choosing a provider

Hosting is the combination of compute, storage, networking, deployment automation, and operational responsibility that keeps your application available on a public domain. Selecting a provider first often leads to avoidable rework: a static host cannot run a conventional database-backed API, while a self-managed server adds patching and certificate work that a small project may not need.

Hosting model Best fit Scaling pattern Control and effort Examples named in current guidance
Static hosting HTML, CSS, JavaScript, documentation and front-end-only single-page apps Usually handles distribution well; backend capacity is not included Low operational effort; limited server control Cloudflare Pages, Vercel, Netlify, GitHub Pages, Azure Static Web Apps
Platform as a service Applications with a managed runtime, API and database connections Convenient scaling with provider-specific limits and pricing Low to moderate effort; you trade root access for automation Vercel, Netlify, Heroku, Railway, Render
Containers or serverless APIs, jobs and services with uneven or event-driven traffic Can scale with demand; some services scale to zero Moderate; runtime and networking choices still matter Google Cloud Run, AWS Lambda
Managed container orchestration Heavier, multi-service backends requiring orchestration Designed for sustained or complex workloads High technical effort and cloud expertise AWS EKS, Azure AKS
VPS Custom stacks, predictable workloads and applications needing root access Vertical scaling and manual or scripted horizontal scaling High control; you perform updates, hardening, monitoring and deployment DigitalOcean, Linode
Dedicated server High-traffic or resource-heavy applications with steady demand Large fixed capacity; expansion requires planning Maximum hardware control and the highest fixed commitment Provider-dependent dedicated servers
Major public cloud Teams needing broad infrastructure and networking options Highly configurable, from fixed instances to autoscaling services Maximum flexibility, but requires in-house expertise AWS, Google Cloud, Azure

A practical rule is to start with a managed service when traffic is unknown or variable, and consider a VPS or dedicated server when demand is heavy and predictable. This is a starting point, not a capacity guarantee: database workload, latency, file processing and compliance requirements can change the answer.

Match the option to your application

Front-end-only sites and single-page apps

If the browser receives prebuilt files and calls an external API, static hosting is usually the simplest architecture. You publish the build output directory, configure a custom domain, and let the platform serve assets over HTTPS. React, Vue and Angular single-page apps need a fallback so that a deep link such as /account/settings is sent to the application shell instead of returning a server 404. If your API is separate, configure the API base URL and any required proxy or cross-origin rules.

Server-rendered or API-backed applications

Choose a PaaS when your application needs a running server process, background worker or managed build pipeline but you do not want to maintain an operating system. PaaS products connect to GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, run your build command, inject environment variables and deploy a release. The convenience carries a premium and provider-specific limits; verify the current plan terms before committing a production workload.

Uneven, event-driven or bursty traffic

Containers and serverless functions are useful when requests arrive in bursts or when jobs can run independently. Google Cloud Run is identified in the guidance as a service that can scale to zero, while AWS Lambda runs functions in response to events. Cold starts, execution limits, connection handling and observability still need testing. A serverless design is not automatically cheaper: high sustained traffic can be more economical on a continuously running service.

Custom operating-system or networking requirements

A VPS supplies dedicated virtual resources and root access. You can choose the web server, runtime, firewall rules and deployment process, but you are responsible for security updates, backups, monitoring, certificates and incident recovery. A dedicated server increases isolation and capacity, with a higher fixed monthly commitment. Major clouds offer the broadest set of networking and managed services, but their flexibility assumes greater operational expertise.

Assess requirements before creating an account

Write down the constraints that determine architecture and plan size. Estimate rather than guessing, then revise the estimates after observing a test deployment.

  • Compute: runtime language, required CPU, memory, worker count and whether jobs run continuously.
  • Storage: application artifacts, database size, user uploads, logs and backup retention.
  • Bandwidth: expected monthly transfer, response size, media delivery and API egress.
  • Traffic shape: average requests, peak requests, geographic distribution and whether peaks are predictable.
  • State: database type, cache, queues, sessions and whether the application can remain stateless between requests.
  • Availability: acceptable downtime, recovery time and recovery point objectives.
  • Compliance: data residency, access logging, encryption and contractual requirements.
  • Operations: who will apply patches, respond to alerts, rotate credentials and restore backups.

For a first release, choose the smallest architecture that satisfies these requirements while leaving a documented upgrade path. Avoid putting a production database on an ephemeral filesystem or assuming that a free tier includes backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the application for deployment

Keep secrets out of the repository

Create a local .env file for development and exclude it from version control. Store database credentials, signing keys, API tokens and similar values in the host’s environment-variable settings. Use the same variable names in development and production where possible, including values such as DATABASE_URL. Never commit a real secret and then rely on deleting the file; assume a committed credential is exposed and rotate it.

Remove local-only assumptions

Search the code and configuration for localhost, private IP addresses, development ports and test callback URLs. Replace them with environment-driven settings. Confirm that the application binds to the host-provided port rather than a hard-coded local port, and that a health endpoint or equivalent check can report readiness without exposing sensitive information.

Define the build and start behavior

Document the install, build, migration and start commands. A static site must identify the exact output directory created by its build tool. A server application must have a deterministic start command and a way to run database migrations safely. Pin runtime and dependency versions where the platform permits it, and verify that production dependencies are installed when development packages are omitted.

Account for framework-specific routing

Single-page applications require client-side route fallback and, when they call a separate backend, an API proxy or correctly configured cross-origin access. Next.js and Nuxt projects require an explicit decision between server-side rendering and static generation; the deployment target must support the selected mode. A static export cannot use server-only features, while server rendering needs a runtime process and appropriate environment variables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deploy through a Git-connected PaaS

This path minimizes server administration and is suitable for many backend applications. Labels differ by provider, but the sequence is broadly the same.

  1. Push a deployment-ready branch. Put the application in GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket. Confirm that secrets and local build artifacts are ignored.
  2. Create a project or service. Select the repository and branch, then choose the runtime or framework preset if offered.
  3. Set build and start commands. Enter the install/build command and the production start command. Specify the output directory for a static build.
  4. Configure environment variables. Add production values in the provider dashboard, including DATABASE_URL, API endpoints, session secrets and callback URLs. Mark sensitive values as secret when the interface supports it.
  5. Attach required services. Configure a database, object storage, queue or cache using the provider’s documented connection details. Keep schema migrations separate from application startup if a failed migration could prevent rollback.
  6. Deploy and inspect the logs. A successful build does not prove that the service is healthy. Check startup logs, health checks, database connectivity, background workers and a real browser request.
  7. Enable automatic deployments deliberately. After the first release is verified, enable deployment on pushes to the main branch or use a protected release branch. Require review for changes to infrastructure and secrets.

Managed platforms generally provide certificates and a deployment pipeline. Read the platform’s current limits and commercial-use terms, especially for free plans, before using one for a business.

Deploy a static application

Static deployment is shorter but routing mistakes are common.

  1. Run the production build locally and identify the generated directory, such as the framework’s documented output folder.
  2. Connect the repository to a static host and enter the build command and output directory exactly.
  3. Configure single-page-app fallback rules so client-side routes serve the entry document.
  4. Set public, non-secret environment values at build time. Do not embed private keys in front-end JavaScript; anything shipped to the browser is public.
  5. Deploy a preview, test direct navigation to nested routes, refresh behavior, asset paths and API calls, then promote the verified branch.

If the app uses server-side rendering, scheduled jobs or a private API, static hosting alone is insufficient. Split the front end and backend or select a runtime that supports those features.

Set up a VPS when you need control

A VPS gives root access but turns hosting into an operations responsibility. The following order limits the risk of exposing an unconfigured service.

  1. Create the instance and a non-root administrator. Use the provider’s supported operating-system image, create a separate administrative account and use key-based authentication where available.
  2. Apply updates and basic hardening. Install security updates, restrict the firewall to required ports, disable unused services and set a process for recurring patches.
  3. Install the runtime and application dependencies. Use versions supported by your framework and keep a record of how they were installed so the server can be rebuilt.
  4. Deploy the application outside the web root. Pull a specific release, set environment variables with file permissions that exclude other users, install production dependencies and run migrations according to your rollback plan.
  5. Run the app as a managed service. Use the operating system’s service manager or an equivalent supervisor so the process restarts after failure and boot.
  6. Put a reverse proxy in front. Configure Nginx or another reverse proxy to accept public HTTP(S) traffic, route requests to the internal application port and serve static assets where appropriate. The proxy configuration must be validated before reload.
  7. Back up the proxy configuration. The Certbot user guide recommends backing up Nginx configurations before using its plugin. Keep a copy outside the server as well.
  8. Issue and install a certificate. Certbot’s Nginx integration is enabled with the --nginx flag. Test renewal and monitor its result rather than assuming a first issuance proves future renewal.
  9. Automate safe reloads. A renewal deploy hook can run systemctl reload nginx after a successful renewal, allowing Nginx to load the new certificate without stopping the service.
  10. Add monitoring and backups. Monitor uptime, disk space, memory, certificate expiry, application errors and database backups. Periodically perform a restore to prove that backups are usable.

HTTPS on a VPS is not just a DNS setting: the reverse proxy, certificate issuance, renewal and firewall rules all have to work together. The exact Nginx proxy directives depend on your framework and are not universal; validate them against the runtime’s documentation rather than copying an unrelated configuration.

Connect a domain, HTTPS and a deployment pipeline

DNS

Register or use a domain, then add the records shown by the hosting platform. An apex record and a www record may use different record types or provider-specific targets. Wait for DNS propagation and verify both names before switching production traffic. Keep the old service available during migration so a mistaken record can be corrected without an outage.

TLS certificates

Managed hosts commonly provision and renew certificates automatically. On a VPS, you must authorize the domain, install the certificate and test renewal. Let’s Encrypt’s official limits page states a maximum of 300 new orders per account every three hours. Secondary sources also cite a limit of 50 certificates per registered domain per week, but that figure was not confirmed on the official page; do not design an issuance loop around it. Use the staging environment while testing so repeated failed attempts do not consume production limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Continuous delivery

Start with a manual production approval even when preview deployments are automatic. A useful pipeline builds from a clean checkout, runs tests, performs the production build, checks migrations and publishes an immutable release. Keep a rollback target and document how to disable an automatic deployment if a bad commit reaches the main branch.

Free-tier limits you should verify before launch

Free plans and quotas change frequently. The figures below are reported in the cited material and should be checked on each provider’s current official page before you choose a host.

Service or plan Limit or term Qualification
GitHub Pages 100 GB per month bandwidth (soft limit); 10 builds per hour (soft limit); site size no larger than 1 GB; deployments time out after 10 minutes From GitHub Docs; the retrieved text did not state a publication year. The build limit does not apply to custom GitHub Actions workflows.
Cloudflare Pages 25 MiB maximum single-asset size From the official limits page. Secondary sources also report 500 builds per month and 20,000 files per site on the free tier; those figures should be rechecked.
Vercel Hobby Up to 100 GB per month reported by secondary sources One source describes this as a fair-use guideline rather than a listed allowance. The conflict with official plan terms is unresolved.
Netlify Free 300 credits per month, roughly 15 GB of bandwidth, with team sites paused when credits run out Secondary-source figures. Accounts created before September 4, 2025 may still use a legacy model.
Let’s Encrypt 300 new orders per account every three hours Official limit. The often-cited 50-certificates-per-registered-domain-per-week figure was not confirmed on the official page.

Quota exhaustion can stop builds, pause sites or block certificate issuance. Track usage, set alerts where available and budget for the paid tier before a launch depends on a free allowance.

Commercial-use and ownership checks

Free hosting is not automatically licensed for every purpose. Secondary material states that Vercel Hobby is restricted to non-commercial, personal use, but this should be verified against the provider’s current official terms before advising a commercial site. A separate secondary source says GitHub Pages is not intended as free hosting for an online business or primarily commercial SaaS; that interpretation was not verified against official text. Treat both as questions to resolve in the provider’s terms, not as universal legal conclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check data-processing terms, account ownership, team access, export options and what happens to the application when credits or quotas are exhausted. Keep your repository, database backups and domain registration independent enough that you can migrate without losing the business.

Common deployment failures and fixes

The build succeeds but the site is blank

Inspect the published output directory and browser console. A wrong output path, absolute asset URL or missing build-time variable commonly produces a blank shell. Confirm that the generated files are actually the files the host serves.

Refreshing a deep link returns 404

Configure the static host’s single-page-app fallback or add an equivalent route rule. Test direct navigation to several nested paths, not just navigation from the home page.

The application cannot reach its database

Check that the production DATABASE_URL exists in the host environment, that the database permits connections from the deployment network and that TLS or certificate settings match the database provider. Do not paste credentials into source code or build logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Environment variables appear to be ignored

Determine whether the framework reads variables at build time or runtime. Rebuild after changing a build-time value, and use the platform’s redeploy action when a running process must be restarted. Remember that browser-exposed variables are not secrets.

The VPS works by IP address but not by domain

Verify DNS records, firewall ports 80 and 443, the reverse-proxy server-name configuration and certificate status. Test the application directly on its internal port and then test the proxy separately to isolate the failing layer.

Renewal or deployment causes an outage

Validate configuration before reload, keep the previous release available, and use a deploy hook that reloads Nginx only after successful certificate renewal. Review service logs immediately after a failed reload and restore the backed-up configuration if necessary.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose static hosting when the product is a front end and API calls go elsewhere.
  • Choose a PaaS when you need a backend and Git-based deployment with minimal server work.
  • Choose containers or serverless when traffic is bursty or execution is event-driven.
  • Choose a VPS when root access, custom networking or predictable workloads justify patching and monitoring it yourself.
  • Choose a dedicated server for consistently heavy, resource-intensive traffic where fixed capacity is economical.
  • Use a major cloud when your team can operate its networking, identity, observability and cost controls.
  • Keep secrets out of Git, test production builds, and define rollback before enabling automatic deployment.
  • Verify current quotas, pricing and commercial-use terms on official provider pages immediately before launch.

For most new applications, begin with the least operationally complex model that supports the backend and traffic pattern: static hosting for a static front end, PaaS for a conventional web service, or serverless/container hosting for irregular demand. Move to a VPS, dedicated server or broader cloud architecture when measured workload, control requirements or compliance needs make that extra responsibility worthwhile.
