What you need before hosting
The correct game and mod-loader versions
Vault Hunters Third Edition is built for Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 and the Forge mod loader. The version that must match across the server and every client is the complete pack release, not merely the Minecraft version. For the current release, install the 3.21.7 client pack and use the 3.21.7 server files.
Vault Hunters adds a procedurally generated Vault dimension, Vault-specific gear and mobs, currency, bosses, 25 artifacts, and a final challenge. Multiplayer is a major part of its design: the official description emphasizes running Vaults together and sharing research and unlocks. That makes a persistent server useful, but it also means a broken or mismatched installation can affect an entire group.

Hardware and a realistic memory plan
There is no single RAM figure that guarantees smooth play for every world and player count. The official player instructions tell clients to allocate 8192 MB (8 GB) to the modpack. A documented Docker deployment uses 8G initial memory and 16G maximum memory for the server. Treat those as reference settings, not a promise that every group needs exactly the same amount.
- Reserve memory for the operating system, Docker (if used), Java overhead, and other services; do not assign every gigabyte on the machine to Minecraft.
- Use fast, reliable storage for the world and region files. Backups and updates are safer when the server directory is on persistent disk.
- CPU performance, storage latency, world exploration, view distance, and simultaneous players can matter as much as the headline RAM number.
- For a home server, upload bandwidth and a stable connection determine whether remote players can stay connected.
Choose where the server will run
| Consideration | Managed host | Self-hosted computer, VPS, or Docker |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Usually guided or automated; confirm that the provider currently supports Vault Hunters 3rd Edition 3.21.7. | You download, extract, configure, accept the EULA, and launch the supplied files yourself. |
| Control | Control is provided through a panel and limited by the selected plan. | You control the world, JVM flags, server properties, files, and update timing. |
| Maintenance | The provider may automate installation and updates; confirm exactly what is included. | You perform updates, backups, troubleshooting, and operating-system maintenance. |
| Networking | The provider supplies a public endpoint; region and latency depend on its locations. | You handle firewall rules, router configuration, DNS, uptime, and exposure to the internet. |
| Cost | A recurring subscription; current prices and included memory vary by provider. | Hardware and electricity at home, or a variable VPS/dedicated-server bill. |
| Recovery | Depends on the host’s backup and restore tools and retention policy. | You own the backups; the documented Docker project includes a backup script. |
Managed hosting
The official Vault Hunters project identifies BisectHosting as its verified hosting partner and says the partner offers automated modpack installation and updates. A managed service is appropriate when you want a public endpoint without administering Linux or a home router. Before paying, verify current support for 3.21.7, the available regions, included memory, player-slot limits, backup retention, restore procedure, and price. Those commercial details are not stated on the project page captured for this guide.

Modrinth’s hosting overview describes Minecraft Java hosting with integrated mod and modpack installation. It can be a comparison option, but you must confirm that Vault Hunters Third Edition 3.21.7 is actually available before ordering; general modpack support does not prove support for this particular release.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting is the better fit when you need direct access to files, JVM settings, and the world. A home computer, rented VPS, or dedicated machine can work if it has adequate CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity. The exact provider size is workload-dependent; the official pack page does not prescribe a universal server specification.
Download the dedicated Vault Hunters server pack
Use the project’s Minecraft 1.18 server-pack section on CurseForge. Select the current Third Edition files and download the server archive that matches the client release:
- Client:
Vault Hunters Third Edition-3.21.7.zip(listed as released July 28, 2026). - Server:
Vault-Hunters-3rd-Edition-3.21.7-server-files.zip(listed as released July 30, 2026).
Use the server-files archive rather than copying a random client installation. A server pack contains the server-side layout and launch material expected by the modpack. Mixing an older server directory with newer client mods, or adding files from an unrelated Third Edition update, can prevent connections and create world or gameplay errors.

Self-hosting: complete setup procedure
1. Create a clean server directory
Create a directory dedicated to this instance, such as vault-hunters-server, on persistent storage. Extract the entire server ZIP into that directory and preserve its folder structure. Do not extract over an existing installation until you have a backup and have confirmed that the archive is the same release.
2. Check the supplied runtime and launch files
The captured official pages confirm Forge and Minecraft 1.18.2 but do not publish a current Java-runtime version for the 3.21.7 server pack. Inspect the archive’s launch scripts and the current official setup guidance for the Java version they expect. Use the supplied launcher as your baseline rather than inventing a different command line.
The exact launcher filename can vary between server-pack releases. If the archive contains separate Windows and Linux scripts, use the one appropriate to your operating system and keep it with the server files so future updates remain reproducible.
3. Make the first launch and accept the EULA
- Run the supplied server launcher once from the server directory.
- Wait for the initial files to be generated, then stop the process if it remains running.
- Open
eula.txt, read Mojang’s terms, and change the setting toeula=trueonly if you agree. - Start the supplied launcher again. The server should now continue its normal startup sequence.
If the process exits immediately, read the console output before changing files. A missing Java runtime, an incorrect working directory, or a damaged extraction is more likely than a world problem on a first launch.
4. Configure server.properties
Edit the generated server.properties for your group. Set a recognizable server name and choose the difficulty and gameplay flags you want. Review view distance and simulation distance in light of your CPU and memory budget. Enable a whitelist for a private group, and decide whether the server should use online-mode authentication appropriate to your player base.
Keep an untouched copy of this file outside the live directory before every update. It records choices that are easy to lose when replacing a server pack.

5. Set memory and launch options
Start with the pack’s supplied launch script. As a reference, the official client guidance allocates 8192 MB, while the documented Docker configuration uses 8G initially and allows up to 16G. Increase limits only when monitoring shows that the world and player load need it; allocating more RAM than the machine can comfortably provide causes operating-system swapping and can make the server less stable.
Leave enough memory for the operating system and any backup, monitoring, or proxy process. If you change JVM flags, record the old values so you can roll back after an update.
6. Make the server reachable
For a home installation, permit the Java server through the host operating system’s firewall and configure the router to forward the Minecraft Java connection to the server computer. The exact screens and rules depend on your operating system, router, and network topology, so use their current documentation rather than copying a generic checklist. A VPS or managed host normally supplies the public endpoint, but you still need to check its firewall and networking controls.
Do not expose an unmaintained server directly to the internet. Keep the operating system patched, use a whitelist for a private group, and avoid sharing administrative credentials.
7. Test locally, then invite players
Join from the host or a local machine first. Confirm that the world loads, the Vault dimension can be entered as intended, and the console reports no missing-mod errors. Then test from a separate network if possible; a local connection can succeed even when router forwarding is wrong.
Every player must install the identical Vault Hunters Third Edition release and Forge loader shown by the server pack. In this case, that means the 3.21.7 client pack on Minecraft 1.18.2. Do not let one player update only the client while the server remains on an older release.

Run Vault Hunters with Docker
The ramity/vault-hunters-3 project documents a reproducible container setup. Docker does not remove the need for the correct server files; it packages the same server process and gives you a consistent start, stop, and logging workflow.
- Install Docker and Docker Compose on the host.
- Obtain the current Vault Hunters server-files ZIP from CurseForge and unzip it into the repository’s
datadirectory. - Optionally edit
./data/server.propertiesbefore starting the container. - Review
docker-compose.yml. You can changeINIT_MEMORYandMAX_MEMORY; the documented defaults are8Gand16G. - From the repository root, start the service with
docker compose up -d. - Follow startup and error output with
docker logs vault_hunters -f. - Stop it cleanly with
docker stop vault_hunters. The project states that the server saves automatically when the container is stopped.
Keep the world and configuration in the mounted data directory so recreating a container does not discard them. The project also supplies ./scripts/backup.sh; run it before changing pack files and retain a copy outside the host that runs Docker.
Ram-disk mode: an optional optimization
The Docker project documents a ram-disk mode for faster I/O. A ram-disk is temporary and does not survive a reboot, so it is not a backup strategy. Use it only after ordinary disk storage, restore testing, and an external copy of the world are working. If the machine reboots without a restore process, changes held only in memory can be lost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups, updates, and rollback
Back up before every version change
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration, and keep at least one rollback copy before replacing server files. Include the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, and any launch configuration that you customized. Label the backup with the pack version and date so you can identify a known-good state.
For Docker, use the documented ./scripts/backup.sh and verify that the resulting archive exists outside the live container or data directory. Automatic saving on container stop protects against an unclean running state, but it does not replace an independent backup.
Update server and clients as one change
- Announce maintenance and stop new players from joining.
- Stop the server cleanly and create a dated backup.
- Read the new server-pack notes and confirm the client release that belongs with it.
- Extract the new server files into a separate staging directory when possible.
- Carry over only the configuration and world data that the release supports; do not blindly overwrite the new launch files with old ones.
- Start the updated server and watch the console for missing mods, migration errors, or registry warnings.
- Test with one client using the matching release before reopening the server to everyone.
If the update fails, stop the process, restore the previous server directory and backup, and keep players on the previous client release until you have diagnosed the difference. Never attempt a world migration without a rollback copy.

Troubleshooting common failures
Players receive a missing-mod or incompatible-version error
Check the complete release number on both sides. The server should use Vault-Hunters-3rd-Edition-3.21.7-server-files.zip, and each player should use Vault Hunters Third Edition-3.21.7.zip with Forge for Minecraft 1.18.2. Reinstalling only the launcher or changing only the Minecraft version will not correct a mismatched mod list.
The server crashes or becomes unresponsive during startup
Read the first meaningful error in the console, not just the final shutdown line. Verify the Java runtime required by the pack’s current launch files, confirm that the archive was extracted completely, and check that the host has free memory beyond the configured heap. If you recently changed JVM flags, return to the supplied launch script and test again.

Remote players cannot connect
Test locally to separate a game installation problem from a networking problem. Then review the host firewall, router forwarding, public address, and any provider firewall. The exact steps vary by equipment, so use current documentation for the operating system and router. A managed host should be checked for its endpoint, region, and firewall controls.
The world disappeared after a Docker restart
Confirm that the server files and world are in the persistent data directory, not only inside a temporary container layer or ram-disk. Restore the latest external backup if necessary. Recreate the container only after verifying the data mount and backup location.
Performance degrades as more terrain is explored
World generation and simulation load increase as players spread out. Review view and simulation distances, watch memory and CPU use, and avoid assigning the entire machine’s RAM to Java. If the host is a home connection, also check upload saturation and other devices using the network.
How to decide between the options
- Choose a managed host if you value a guided installation, a provider-maintained public endpoint, and less operating-system work. Confirm 3.21.7 support, memory, regions, backups, and restoration before subscribing.
- Choose a home server if you already have suitable hardware and want full control, accepting router, firewall, power, and uptime responsibilities.
- Choose a VPS or dedicated machine if you want self-hosting control without placing the server on your home network. Budget for the variable compute, storage, and bandwidth cost.
- Choose Docker when repeatable deployment, explicit memory variables, container logs, and scripted backups are valuable. Keep persistent data on normal disk storage before experimenting with ram-disks.
Key facts about this release
The current project listing shows 5.9 million total downloads on CurseForge as of the 2026 listing. That is a platform download count, not a measurement of concurrent players or a guarantee of server performance. The pack’s identity and multiplayer focus explain why matching client and server files matter more than simply installing Forge 1.18.2.
For most groups, the safest path is straightforward: use the dedicated 3.21.7 server archive, begin with the supplied launcher and a deliberate memory budget, test connectivity with a matching client, and make a verified backup before every update.
