To change a 7 Days to Die dedicated server’s map, stop the server, edit the XML file it actually loads, set GameWorld to RWG, enter a new WorldGenSeed, choose a supported WorldGenSize, back up the existing save, and restart. A new seed or size does not resize an existing map in place: the server loads a matching generated world if one already exists, or creates one when no matching world is present.

Navezgane is the handcrafted map. It does not use the random-generation seed, so changing WorldGenSeed while GameWorld is set to Navezgane will not produce a different RWG map.
How world selection works
The seed and size are generation inputs, not live editing controls. When the server starts, it evaluates those settings and the resulting world identity. If a world with that resulting name already exists, the server loads it. If it does not exist, the server generates a new world.

That behavior explains two common surprises:
- Changing the seed can appear to do nothing when the server is still loading an existing world or when it is configured to use Navezgane.
- Changing the size does not expand or contract the current terrain. A different size results in a different generated-world choice and requires preserving the old save if you might want to return to it.
Supported world-size values
The current V3.2 server-settings reference lists these WorldGenSize values:

Those values are multiples of 2,048. They are not a universal promise for every release: older references show different ranges. Check the serverconfig.xml shipped with the exact server build you run and use only values that build accepts. If the configuration or startup log rejects a value, return to a documented value for that build rather than guessing another size.

1. Stop the server cleanly
Use your host panel or server-management method to stop the dedicated server and wait until the process has exited. Do not edit the active XML while the server is writing settings or saving the world. A clean stop reduces the chance of copying an incomplete save or having a running process overwrite your edits.
2. Back up the save and configuration
Make a separate copy of the current world save and the configuration file before changing anything. Keep the backup outside the live save location and label it with the date, current seed, size, and game version if you know them. This is your recovery path if the new world is not what you expected or you later decide to return to the old map.

3. Create a custom configuration file
Copy the shipped serverconfig.xml to a custom file, such as myserver.xml. Editing a copy protects your settings when an update replaces or refreshes the vendor-supplied configuration. The copy is useful only if the server actually reads it, so do not skip the next step.
4. Confirm which file the launch process reads
Inspect the startup script, service definition, or hosting-panel configuration and identify its config-file option. Confirm that it points to your custom XML file. If the launch process still points to another file, edits to myserver.xml will have no effect and the old seed or size will continue to load.
5. Edit only the XML value attributes
Open the active file and change the values, not the property names, comments, or surrounding XML structure. A minimal RWG configuration looks like this:

<property name="WorldGenSize" value="8192" />Replace YourNewSeed with the seed string you want and choose a size supported by your build. Preserve the quotation marks and XML syntax. If the file already contains these properties, change only the text inside each value attribute. Do not rename GameWorld, WorldGenSeed, or WorldGenSize.

6. Save the file and verify the three inputs
Before starting, read the file back and check all three entries together:
GameWorldis exactlyRWG, notNavezgane.WorldGenSeedcontains the intended seed string.WorldGenSizeis an accepted value for the installed build.
Also confirm that the launch command still references this file after any panel or script changes.

Start the dedicated server and watch its console or log. Look for messages indicating that the world is being generated or that an existing world is being loaded. Generation can take longer for larger worlds, and a modded installation may need additional processing and storage. Do not let players connect until the intended world is available.
8. Have clients connect only after the world is ready
Every player should use a compatible game version and the required mod set. After a server update, mismatched client or mod versions can prevent joining even when the world settings are correct. Once the first successful startup is complete, make another backup so you have a restore point for the new map.

Changing only the seed
To keep the same world size but generate a different RWG map, leave WorldGenSize unchanged and alter only WorldGenSeed. Ensure GameWorld remains RWG. On restart, the server will load a world matching the new generation result if that world already exists; otherwise it will generate one.
Changing the seed is therefore not a safe way to create a second map while preserving the first automatically. The old save remains valuable only if you backed it up or otherwise kept it separate. Record the seed and size associated with each save so you can identify the correct world later.

Changing only the world size
To select a different map size, keep GameWorld set to RWG, leave the seed as desired, and change WorldGenSize to a supported value. The server does not resize the existing terrain in place. Treat the result as a separate generated-world state and keep the previous save intact.
A larger map can increase generation work and resource requirements. The exact generation time depends on the server build, hardware, storage, and installed mods; the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed time.
Memory and storage planning
Generation and normal operation both need free resources. The 7D2D dedicated-server guidance gives these practical planning figures:

These figures are guidance, not a guarantee that every map will generate successfully. Larger worlds and modded groups can require more memory and storage. If generation fails, check available RAM, disk space, and mod compatibility before changing the seed again.

Troubleshooting a seed or size change
The seed appears to be ignored
- Open the active XML and verify
GameWorldisRWG. - Confirm the server is not set to
Navezgane, which selects the handcrafted map and does not use the RWG seed. - Check that the world was not already generated under the same resulting name and then loaded again.
Nothing changes after editing
- Verify the launch process points to the file you edited.
- Make sure you changed the XML
valueattribute rather than the property name or a comment. - Stop the server before editing and restart it after saving.
- Read the startup log to determine whether the server loaded an existing world or began generation.
The server rejects the world size
Use a value documented for the installed build. For the current V3.2 reference, that means 6144, 8192, or 10240. Because older references differ, do not assume a value from another release is valid for yours. Check the shipped configuration and the error reported at startup.
Players cannot join after an update
Check that the server and every client run compatible game versions and matching required mods. A configuration edit cannot correct a version or mod mismatch. Test one client after the server reports that the world is ready, then bring in the rest of the group.
Generation is slow or fails
First check free RAM and storage, especially when using a larger size or a heavily modded setup. The documented guidance is 6 GB free RAM for a small server and 10–16 GB for a comfortable modded or four-plus-player setup. These numbers do not promise a fixed generation time. If resources are adequate, review the startup log for the specific generation or mod error before retrying.
Dedicated-server context
A dedicated server runs the game world as a standalone process, so no host player has to remain online; the world persists continuously and the server controls settings, mods, and administration. The Steam tool used for this purpose is app 294420, “7 Days to Die Dedicated Server,” separate from the main game app 251570. This distinction matters when updating or locating the files: editing a client installation does not change the configuration read by the dedicated-server process.
