The reliable process is to freeze the pack’s Minecraft, Fabric loader, Java and mod versions; install the matching Java runtime; install Fabric Server in a dedicated folder; launch once to create the files; agree to Mojang’s EULA; add only server-compatible mods; then configure memory and network access.

This guide covers a small Fabric server for a private group, whether everyone is on the same home network or friends connect over the internet. Mojang states that its server setup is compatible only with Minecraft: Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.

What “vanilla lightweight modpack” means
Vanilla normally means an unmodified Minecraft server. A modpack cannot be completely vanilla: it needs a loader and mods. In this guide, “vanilla lightweight” means the base Java game with a small Fabric pack rather than a large technology or automation pack. The distinction matters because every connecting client and the server must agree on the same Minecraft version, loader family and required mod versions.
Fabric mods also have different sides. A server-side mod can run on the server, a client-side mod can run only on a player’s game, and some mods must be installed on both. Treat the pack’s own server instructions as authoritative. If the pack includes a server bundle or generated start script, use those files instead of rebuilding the installation by hand.

Decide where the server will run
For a few friends, self-hosting is usually the simplest and least expensive approach if a computer can remain online. The right choice depends less on a headline player count than on who will maintain the machine, network and backups.

Whichever model you choose, keep the world and configuration under your control and make a backup before every mod, loader or Minecraft-version change.

Freeze the compatibility matrix first
Write down the exact values before installing anything:
- Minecraft Java Edition version.
- Fabric Loader version.
- Fabric API version, if the pack requires it.
- Every mod name and version.
- Whether each mod is required on the server, the client, or both.
- The Java major version required by that Minecraft release.
Do not let a launcher silently update one part of the matrix while the server remains on another. A client that has the right mod names but a different Minecraft or loader version can still be refused at login or produce registry and packet errors.
Java versions required by Minecraft
Fabric’s version mapping, on its Wiki page last modified September 28, 2024, is:

Use the version required by the pack, not simply the newest Java installed on the computer. A newer runtime can produce an unsupported-class-version error or other startup failures when a release expects an older one.
Prepare Java and a dedicated server folder
Verify the Java executable
Install a compatible Java runtime, then verify the major version from the same account that will run the server. In Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt, run:

which javaThe first command should show the expected major number, such as 17 or 21. The second shows which executable is being selected. If it points to a different installation than the one you intended, fix the system PATH or call the correct executable explicitly in the start script.
Create an isolated directory
Use a folder that contains only this server. It will eventually hold the Fabric launcher, eula.txt, server.properties, mods, config, logs and the world directories. Isolation makes backups and version changes safer.
On Linux, an example is:
mkdir -p ~/minecraft-lightweight
cd ~/minecraft-lightweightOn Windows, create a folder such as C:Minecraftlightweight-server and open a terminal in that folder. Avoid running the server from a temporary downloads directory; installers and backups are much easier to identify when the server has a permanent home.
Install Fabric Server for the exact release
- Download the Fabric installer from Fabric’s official distribution channel.
- Open the installer and select the Server tab.
- Choose the exact Minecraft version from your compatibility matrix.
- Choose the exact Fabric Loader version required by the pack.
- Set the installation directory to the dedicated server folder.
- Enable the option to download the Minecraft server JAR when the installer offers it.
- Install and generate the launcher files and start scripts if offered.
Do not choose the newest Minecraft or loader merely because it appears first. A pack built for 1.20.1, for example, is not automatically compatible with 1.20.4 or 1.20.5. If the pack supplies a server JAR, loader files or start script, compare its instructions with the installer and prefer the supplied set.
After installation, inspect the folder. You should see a Fabric launcher JAR or generated launch script and, after the first run, the normal Minecraft server files. If the installer reports that it cannot download the game server, confirm the directory is writable and that the machine has internet access, then download the server file again before proceeding.
Run once, accept the EULA, and run again
Start the generated script rather than double-clicking random JAR files. Fabric’s Windows flow commonly creates start.bat; Linux installations may create start.sh. The first launch normally stops after creating configuration files and eula.txt.
- Run the start script once and wait for it to finish creating files.
- Open
eula.txtand read Mojang’s EULA. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to the EULA. - Save the file and start the server again.
- Wait for a log message indicating that the server is ready for connections before trying to join.
If the server keeps stopping with an EULA message, check that the file is in the directory from which the script is running and that the value is exactly true, without extra spaces or quotation marks.

Build the server’s mod set from a tested client
First launch a client instance with the intended pack and confirm that it reaches a world. This catches a broken download or an incompatible mod before it affects the server. Then assemble the server from that known set:
- Open the client instance’s mod list and the pack’s server documentation.
- Copy server-required and common-side mods into the server’s
modsfolder. - Copy the pack’s required configuration files into the server’s
configfolder, preserving the directory structure. - Add Fabric API when the mod set requires it; most Fabric mods require it according to Fabric’s server documentation.
- Leave purely client-side visual, interface and performance mods out of the server.
- Restart the server and read the complete log before inviting anyone.
Do not copy a client folder wholesale. Fabric’s Windows guidance specifically warns against putting OptiFine or OptiFabric on the server, and any client-only entry can crash startup. When a mod page labels a dependency, install that dependency at the required version rather than guessing from the file name.
Keep clients synchronized
Every player should use the same Minecraft version, Fabric Loader version and required mod versions. Some optional client-only mods may differ, but a mod that adds blocks, items, entities, dimensions or networking generally must match the server’s version. Distribute a manifest or a zipped client instance so that players do not assemble slightly different collections by hand.
Set memory without starving the machine
There is no universal “correct” RAM amount, player limit, CPU requirement or upload speed for every lightweight pack. Memory use changes with the pack, world size, view distance, simulation distance, chunk generation and simultaneous activity. Follow the pack’s instructions first, then measure the server while leaving enough memory for the operating system and, if applicable, the game client.

Those are starting examples, not a promise that a particular number of players will run smoothly.
Windows start-script example
If the installer generated a script, keep its launcher filename and arguments. If you need to set the heap yourself, a minimal example is:

pause-Xms sets the initial heap and -Xmx sets the maximum heap. Replace neither value blindly: use the pack’s documented requirement and observe the log and operating-system memory pressure.

Linux start-script example

java -Xms1024M -Xmx2048M -jar fabric-server-launch.jar noguiSave it as start.sh, make it executable with chmod +x start.sh, and launch it with ./start.sh. A terminal multiplexer or service manager can keep it running after you disconnect, but configure that only after the server works interactively.
Recognize memory and performance symptoms
- A heap-exhaustion error or repeated garbage-collection pauses indicates that the configured maximum may be too low for the current workload or that a mod is leaking memory.
- “Can’t keep up” messages indicate that the server is falling behind in tick processing; more RAM alone may not fix a CPU-heavy mod, high simulation distance or chunk generation.
- If the operating system begins swapping, reduce the maximum heap or stop other applications before increasing it.
Change one variable at a time and restart cleanly. Record the old values so you can reverse an adjustment that makes performance worse.
Configure server.properties for a private group
Stop the server before editing server.properties. The following is a conservative example; adapt it to the pack and the capacity of the host:
server-port=25565
server-ip=
white-list=true
view-distance=8
simulation-distance=6
difficulty=normal- server-port: Minecraft’s documented default Java port is 25565. Keep it unless another service already uses it.
- server-ip: Leaving this blank usually lets the server listen on the host’s available interfaces. Binding it to the wrong local address can prevent connections.
- white-list: Enable it for a private group, then add approved players from the console.
- view-distance and simulation-distance: Lower values reduce work and bandwidth but shorten what players can see or what continues to tick. Raise them only after testing.
- difficulty: Select the setting your group wants; it does not affect Fabric compatibility.
Use the server console to grant access and permissions, for example whitelist add PlayerName and op PlayerName. Give operator status only to people who need administrative commands.
Let players connect on the same network
Players on the same home or office LAN normally do not need internet-facing port forwarding. Find the host’s private address and give it to the other players:

ipconfigand identify the IPv4 address on the active adapter. - Linux: run
ip addrand identify the address on the active interface.
In Minecraft’s multiplayer screen, players connect to that private address and the configured port, such as 192.168.1.25:25565. If the host’s firewall asks whether Java may accept connections, allow the server process on the private network. Do not disable the firewall globally.
Allow friends to connect from outside your network
Remote play requires the host to be reachable from the internet. Mojang’s server instructions call out port forwarding for players outside the local network and list 25565 as Java’s default port.
- Give the server computer a stable private address, preferably with a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Allow the Java server through the host operating system’s firewall on the configured port.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the configured Java port to the server computer’s private address.
- Keep the router’s external port and the server’s internal port aligned unless you have a specific reason to translate them.
- Have a friend test from a different network, such as mobile data. Testing from inside the same LAN can give a misleading result on routers without NAT loopback.
- Give remote players your current public address and port. Do not post it publicly or grant them router administration access.
If forwarding appears correct but no one outside can connect, your internet provider may use carrier-grade NAT, or the router may be behind another router. In that case, ordinary forwarding cannot reach the server until the upstream device or provider supplies a reachable address. A VPS or managed host avoids that home-network constraint.
Only forward the Minecraft port needed for play. Do not expose remote administration panels, file shares or RCON to the public internet unless you understand their authentication and firewall requirements.
Operate the server safely
Stop before changing files
Use the console command stop and wait for the save to finish before replacing mods, editing configuration or copying a world. Killing the process can leave region files incomplete.
Back up the right directories
With the server stopped, back up the world directories, server.properties, eula.txt, mods, config, datapacks and any custom scripts. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine. Test that an archive can actually be opened; a backup that was never checked is not a recovery plan.
Update in a controlled order
- Make a dated backup and record the current Minecraft, loader and mod versions.
- Read the release notes for the pack and every mod that is changing.
- Clone the server folder or use a staging folder for the update.
- Update Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Fabric API and mods according to the pack’s stated order.
- Start the staging copy, load a test world or a copy of the production world, and inspect the log.
- Ask clients to update their instances only after the server passes the test.
Never test a new mod combination directly on the only copy of a valuable world.
Troubleshoot the first startup and connection

When a crash report names a mod, remove only that mod and test again rather than deleting the entire pack. If the server becomes stable, check that mod’s Minecraft and Fabric requirements before restoring it.

When a managed host or VPS is the better fit
Consider renting a Fabric-capable server when you cannot leave a home computer on, cannot configure the router, need a public address, or do not want to maintain operating-system updates. Before paying, verify these points in writing:
- Supported Minecraft and Fabric Loader versions.
- Whether you can upload arbitrary JAR files and edit
server.properties. - Whether Java flags such as
-Xmsand-Xmxare configurable. - How often backups run, how long they are retained and whether you can download them.
- Whether changing modpack versions requires a fresh installation or can be done in place.
- Any limits on CPU time, storage, player slots, automated restarts or network traffic.
- How cancellation and world export work.
A managed service removes much of the router and uptime work, but it does not remove compatibility work: clients still need the same Minecraft, Fabric and mod matrix, and you still need a backup before updates.
Final launch checklist
- The server and every client use Minecraft: Java Edition.
- The Minecraft release, Fabric Loader and Java major version match the pack’s requirements.
- The server folder is dedicated and backed up.
- The first launch created the files, and the EULA was accepted before the second launch.
- Only server-compatible mods and required dependencies are in
mods. - Memory flags leave room for the operating system and other applications.
server.propertieshas the intended whitelist, distances and port.- LAN players use the host’s private address; remote players use a forwarded public port.
- The console reaches its ready state, and the first player can join a test world before the whole group connects.
Once that checklist passes, a small Fabric pack should be straightforward to run: keep the compatibility matrix recorded, stop cleanly before changes, and treat backups as part of every update.
