To make Postfix send mail without hosting Internet mailboxes, run it as a local submission service and route every remote recipient through an authenticated upstream relay. Bind the SMTP listener to loopback (or a narrowly defined internal address), restrict trusted networks, configure a relayhost, require TLS and SMTP-client authentication, and keep reject_unauth_destination in the relay policy.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This design lets local applications submit messages to a queue while preventing the server from accepting arbitrary inbound Internet mail or becoming an open relay. The exact service-manager and log-file commands vary by operating system, so record your distribution and the installed Postfix version while configuring and troubleshooting.

What “send-only” Postfix actually does
A send-only Postfix host accepts mail from applications running on the machine, queues it, and forwards it to recipients through another SMTP service. It is not a mailbox server: it should not receive Internet mail for your domain, maintain user inboxes, or expose an unauthenticated submission endpoint to the public network.
The upstream service may be a corporate submission server, a hosted transactional relay, or another SMTP provider. Postfix remains responsible for local queueing, retrying temporary failures, and handing the message to that service. The provider is responsible for the final Internet delivery and usually supplies the public reputation, rate controls, and authentication policy.

Typical message path
- An application submits a message to Postfix on the local host, normally through the loopback interface.
- Postfix places the message in its queue and applies its relay-authorization rules.
- For a non-local recipient, Postfix connects to the configured
relayhost. - The SMTP client negotiates the provider’s required TLS mode and authenticates with the configured SASL credentials.
- The provider accepts, defers, or rejects the message. Postfix records the response and retries deferred mail according to its queue policy.
Decide whether an upstream relay is the right design
Direct delivery and authenticated relaying solve different operational problems. A host with a stable public identity, carefully managed DNS, and an established sending reputation can deliver directly, but it must handle far more policy and reputation work. A server without a fixed public identity is generally better served by a managed relay.
| Decision factor | Direct-to-recipient delivery | Authenticated upstream relay |
|---|---|---|
| Public identity | Requires a stable, reputation-bearing public address and consistent DNS. | The provider’s infrastructure supplies the Internet-facing delivery identity. |
| Configuration and operations | You manage recipient-server compatibility, retries, reputation, and DNS policy. | Postfix manages local queueing; the provider handles final delivery mechanics. |
| Authentication | Usually no per-recipient authentication, but recipient servers evaluate your IP and domain reputation. | Postfix authenticates to the relay with an SMTP-client SASL map. |
| TLS policy | You must negotiate TLS separately with many recipient servers. | You enforce one documented TLS policy to the relay endpoint. |
| Limits and compliance | You set your own rate controls and must satisfy each recipient’s policies. | The provider’s quotas, acceptable-use rules, and account limits apply. |
Use a relayhost when the machine has no dependable public identity, when outbound policy must be centralized, or when you want the provider to manage Internet deliverability. Direct delivery is a deliberate infrastructure project, not the default consequence of installing Postfix.

Prerequisites and package setup
- A Linux or Unix host on which you can administer Postfix and its configuration files.
- An SMTP submission account and endpoint from your upstream provider, including the required port and TLS mode.
- A sender domain and local hostname that the provider permits. The hostname should be a fully qualified name.
- A plan for where local applications will submit mail. For a single host, loopback-only access is normally sufficient.
- Administrative access to protect the credential map and inspect the mail log.
Install the Postfix package supplied by your operating system. Package dialogs differ by distribution; choose an Internet-site or satellite-system style only when it matches your intended routing model. After installation, record the version:
postconf mail_version
Keep that value with your deployment notes. Parameter defaults and available settings can differ between Postfix releases, and version information is essential when interpreting documentation or support responses.
Set the host identity and local address domains
Postfix uses several identity parameters for locally generated messages and for deciding which destinations are local. Set myhostname to the server’s fully qualified name, then review the related domain settings rather than accepting package defaults blindly.
| Parameter | Purpose | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
myhostname |
The server’s canonical name. | It resolves as intended and is a name accepted by the upstream relay. |
myorigin |
Domain appended to locally generated sender addresses. | System-generated mail has the sender domain you expect. |
mydomain |
The parent domain used by other default settings. | It matches your organization’s intended mail identity. |
mydestination |
Domains Postfix treats as locally delivered. | Only names that should terminate on this host are listed; your Internet mailbox domain is not added accidentally. |
A send-only machine can still have local delivery for system accounts, but that does not make it an Internet mailbox server. Keep the local-destination list intentionally narrow and ensure the envelope and header domains align with the relay provider’s requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the SMTP listener local
If applications on the same machine are the only clients, bind Postfix to loopback. This prevents unsolicited connections from the network while preserving local SMTP submission.
inet_interfaces = loopback-only
mynetworks_style = host
mynetworks_style = host tells Postfix to trust only the local machine. The alternative is an explicit mynetworks list containing only the loopback addresses and any fixed application hosts that genuinely need access.

When another internal host must submit
Add that host’s fixed address to mynetworks instead of exposing Postfix on every interface. If the client cannot be constrained by address, require SMTP-client authentication and permit only authenticated submissions. Do not open the listener to the Internet merely because one remote application needs to send mail.
Review IPv4 and IPv6 behavior separately. A loopback policy that covers IPv4 but leaves an externally reachable IPv6 listener can defeat the intended restriction. Confirm the effective value with postconf inet_interfaces mynetworks mynetworks_style and inspect listening sockets using the network tools provided by your operating system.

Route all remote mail through the relayhost
Set relayhost to the upstream provider’s SMTP submission endpoint. Enclose the hostname in square brackets when you want Postfix to connect to that exact host without performing an MX lookup. Include the port required by the provider.
relayhost = [mail.example.com]:submissions
The name and port above are an example format; replace them with the endpoint documented by your provider. Submission services commonly use a dedicated port and a specified TLS mode. Do not copy a wrapper-mode configuration to a STARTTLS service, or vice versa.
Implicit TLS (wrapper mode)
For a service that expects TLS immediately when the TCP connection opens, the Postfix TLS guidance uses settings of this form:
relayhost = [mail.example.com]:submissions
smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt
smtp_tls_wrappermode = yes
smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt requires encryption for the SMTP client session. Wrapper mode is appropriate only when the provider explicitly documents implicit TLS on that endpoint.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →STARTTLS
For a submission port that begins in plain SMTP and upgrades with the STARTTLS command, use the provider’s documented port and STARTTLS settings. Leave wrapper mode disabled unless the provider says otherwise. The important property is that the client enforces the provider’s required TLS policy instead of silently falling back to an unencrypted connection.
TLS protects both SMTP content in transit and the SASL authentication exchange. It does not replace relay authorization: an encrypted connection with a weak recipient policy can still be abused.

Configure SMTP-client SASL authentication
Enable Postfix’s SMTP client authentication and point it at a password map. The map backend must be installed and supported by your distribution; the example below uses the common hash backend.
smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
Create /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd with one credential entry for the exact relay destination, including the port when the provider distinguishes endpoints:
[mail.example.com]:submissions username:REPLACE_WITH_PROVIDER_SECRET
Use the provider’s real username format and secret. Do not publish credentials in configuration examples, shell history, tickets, or logs. Restrict the source file to the Postfix administrator, then generate the database corresponding to the selected map type:
chmod 600 /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
postmap hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
The generated database is also sensitive. Apply equivalent ownership and permissions, and include both files in your secret-management and rotation procedures. If your distribution uses a different map backend, follow its map-generation command rather than assuming postmap hash: is available.
Preserve relay authorization safeguards
A send-only host still needs an explicit rule that rejects unauthorized destinations. On Postfix 2.10 and later, place that policy in smtpd_relay_restrictions and retain reject_unauth_destination after the permits appropriate for your clients.
smtpd_relay_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, permit_sasl_authenticated, reject_unauth_destination
permit_mynetworks authorizes clients in the deliberately narrow trusted-network list. permit_sasl_authenticated authorizes clients that authenticate successfully. reject_unauth_destination prevents the server from relaying to arbitrary domains for an unauthorized sender.
Local-only submission
With loopback-only listening and host-style networks, local applications can submit without credentials while outside hosts cannot connect. Keep the rejection guard anyway; binding and trust restrictions are complementary controls, not substitutes for a destination check.
Remote application submission
If a separate application host must submit, choose one of two narrow approaches: add its fixed address to mynetworks, or require SASL authentication and permit authenticated clients. Never replace the rejection rule with a blanket permit. An open relay can be abused quickly, damage the sending domain’s reputation, and create provider-account or network-abuse incidents.

Example starting configuration
The following fragment combines the key controls. Adapt identity names, endpoint, port, and TLS mode to your environment; it is not a universal drop-in file.
myhostname = smtp01.example.net
myorigin = $myhostname
mydomain = example.net
mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost
inet_interfaces = loopback-only
mynetworks_style = host
relayhost = [mail.example.com]:submissions
smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt
smtp_tls_wrappermode = yes
smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
smtpd_relay_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, permit_sasl_authenticated, reject_unauth_destination
If your provider uses STARTTLS, remove wrapper mode and apply the provider’s documented submission settings. If another trusted host submits, replace the host-only network policy with an explicitly scoped address list or an authenticated submission design.
Apply and verify the configuration
Validate effective values before reloading. Checking the rendered configuration catches syntax and override problems that are easy to miss when several files or package defaults are involved.
- Display the values that control identity, listening, routing, and TLS:
postconf myhostname relayhost inet_interfaces mynetworks smtp_tls_security_level - Build or refresh the SASL password map after any credential-file edit:
postmap hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd - Run Postfix’s built-in consistency check:
postfix check - Reload the service so the running process reads the validated settings:
postfix reload - Submit one controlled message from a local application or an approved test command to an address you can inspect.
- Follow the mail log and correlate the queue ID from acceptance through relay connection, TLS negotiation, authentication result, and final delivery or deferral.
The exact log path and service-manager commands differ by distribution. A message accepted into Postfix’s local queue proves only that the local SMTP transaction succeeded; it does not prove that the upstream relay accepted or delivered the message.
Evidence of a healthy send
- The message receives a queue ID immediately after local submission.
- Log entries show a connection to the configured relayhost rather than direct connections to recipient MX servers.
- The SMTP client negotiates the expected TLS mode and authenticates successfully.
- The relay returns a success response, and Postfix records final delivery rather than repeated deferrals.
Troubleshoot by symptom
“Connection refused” from the application
Check inet_interfaces and the application’s SMTP host and port. A loopback-only Postfix listener will reject connections aimed at an external address. If the application runs in a container or on another host, its network path must be explicitly allowed; do not solve the problem by binding Postfix to every interface without adding an authorization policy.
“Relay access denied” or “554 5.7.1”
Confirm that the client is in mynetworks or is actually authenticating. Then verify that reject_unauth_destination is present after the intended permits. Check the envelope recipient and the provider’s account permissions; a provider may allow only approved sender domains or destinations.

Verify that the password-map key exactly matches the bracketed relay hostname and port in relayhost. Re-run the map-generation command, inspect file ownership and permissions, and make sure the provider expects the selected SASL mechanism. Never troubleshoot by printing the secret into a world-readable file or debug log.
TLS negotiation errors
Compare the provider’s documented mode with your settings. Wrapper mode must not be used for a STARTTLS endpoint. Confirm the endpoint name, port, certificate expectations, and system time. The log should show whether the failure occurred before TLS, during certificate negotiation, or after authentication.
Best Value
Mail remains deferred
A deferred queue entry means Postfix accepted the message locally but could not complete the upstream transaction. Inspect the relay response and queue ID, correct transient DNS, network, quota, or authentication problems, and allow Postfix to retry. Do not assume that a successful local submission equals final delivery.
The host appears to be an open relay
Immediately inspect listening interfaces, trusted networks, and relay restrictions. Ensure the listener is not exposed unintentionally, remove broad subnet trust, restore reject_unauth_destination, reload Postfix, and review logs for unauthorized attempts. Rotate credentials if the relay account may have been exposed.

Common design questions
Can Postfix send mail if it does not listen on a public interface?
Yes. Local applications connect through loopback, and Postfix’s SMTP client makes the outbound connection to the relayhost. Inbound Internet reachability is not required for this send-only pattern.
Does a relayhost eliminate the need for local relay restrictions?
No. The relayhost controls where Postfix sends remote mail; relay restrictions control who is allowed to use your Postfix instance and which destinations it may relay. Keep both controls configured.
Should the relayhost use square brackets?
Use brackets when you want Postfix to connect to that exact hostname and suppress MX lookups. Include the provider’s required port in the same value when necessary.
Is TLS encryption enough without SASL authentication?
No. TLS protects the connection, but the provider may still require credentials and sender authorization. Configure the provider’s required SASL authentication and protect the password map.
Why does the exact reload or log command differ?
Distributions package Postfix with different service managers, file locations, and logging arrangements. The Postfix commands postconf, postfix check, and postfix reload are stable validation points, while service and log inspection commands should follow the host operating system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Postfix as send-only while keeping local system mail?
Yes. Local system accounts can remain in the local-destination configuration while remote recipients are routed through the relayhost. This does not make the machine an Internet mailbox server.
What should I do if my provider requires a different SASL map backend?
Use the backend supported by your distribution, change smtp_sasl_password_maps to that map type, and run the corresponding map-generation command. The source credential file and generated database must both be protected.
How can I prove the server is not delivering directly to recipient domains?
Inspect the queue and mail log for the outbound SMTP connection. A send-only relay design should show connections to the configured relayhost, with TLS and authentication results, rather than direct connections to recipient MX servers.
