The reliable way to host TREPIDATION is to deploy its matching Forge server pack for Minecraft 1.12.2, give the process at least 5–6 GB of RAM, and make every player use the identical client version. For a small private group, a 6 GB machine is a sensible starting point; larger groups or heavy exploration need more headroom.

TREPIDATION is a story-driven horror roguelite modpack by CalaMariGold. A run begins in the Nether, progresses through distinct dimensions, and challenges players to defeat the Ender Dragon before the timer expires. Because the pack combines Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge, custom mods, dimensions, and a timed progression system, a normal unmodded Minecraft server jar is not enough.
You need the server files for the same TREPIDATION release installed on the host, and each player needs the corresponding client pack. A server on one pack version and clients on another may reject connections, produce missing-mod errors, or behave unpredictably after a world has been opened.

Choose self-hosting or a managed server
Self-hosting gives you control over files, configuration, backups, and upgrades. It can run on a spare desktop, a dedicated machine, or a virtual private server. You are responsible for Java, firewall rules, port forwarding, operating-system updates, monitoring, and recovery when something fails.
Managed hosting trades some control for a control panel, automated deployment, and a public address. It is usually easier for a group that does not want to administer a Linux or Windows server. Confirm the exact Minecraft, Forge, and TREPIDATION version before paying, because a provider’s generic Forge installer may not include the pack release you need.

Self-host when
- You already have a machine with dependable upstream bandwidth and at least 6 GB available for the server process.
- You want direct access to the world, configuration files, logs, and mod files.
- You are comfortable opening a firewall port, forwarding a router port, and maintaining backups.
- Your group is small enough that occasional maintenance windows are acceptable.
Use managed hosting when
- You need a reachable server without configuring home networking.
- You want one-click or panel-based Forge installation and simpler upgrades.
- You prefer a host to handle the machine, network, and basic availability while you manage the game settings.
- You need to change RAM tiers as exploration and player activity grow.
Resource requirements and practical sizing
The TREPIDATION project page says, “Allocate 5-6GB RAM.” Treat that as the pack’s starting guidance. It does not establish a universal player limit, a guaranteed tick rate, or a minimum CPU model. Modded Minecraft performance also depends on CPU speed, storage latency, Java behavior, view distance, and how quickly players generate new chunks.
Game Host Bros recommends at least 6 GB and publishes 10 GB and 14 GB tiers for larger or busier communities. Its guidance also recommends pre-generating the world to reduce exploration-related lag spikes. That is provider advice rather than an independent benchmark, but it is useful when planning capacity.

CPU and storage considerations
A high memory number does not by itself make a server responsive. A fast CPU helps the main Minecraft tick thread, while low-latency storage helps world saves and chunk loading. Keep the server world on SSD storage when possible. Avoid running large backups, antivirus scans, or unrelated workloads on the same machine during active play.
Exploration is particularly demanding because new chunks must be generated and saved. If your hosting panel supports it, pre-generate a reasonable play area before inviting everyone. Do this on a copy or during a maintenance window, because generation itself can temporarily consume substantial CPU, memory, and disk activity.

Install the server pack on your own machine
Use a dedicated directory for the server rather than placing it inside a client installation. A separate directory makes permissions, backups, upgrades, and rollback safer.
- Pick the release. Download the TREPIDATION server pack that matches the client release you intend to use. For the current listing, that is TREPIDATION-1.3.1.zip for Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge.
- Create a server directory. Choose a location with sufficient free SSD space and enough RAM that the operating system will not begin swapping under load.
- Extract the archive. Preserve the directory structure supplied by the pack. Do not merge it into another modpack or remove files because their names look unfamiliar.
- Confirm the runtime requirement. Java requirements are release-specific. The v0.5.8.1 server-pack page says Java 21 or newer is required to launch the pack but not the server. That note must be checked against the exact release you deploy; do not assume a requirement from v0.5.8.1 applies unchanged to TREPIDATION-1.3.1.
- Start the server once. Use the launch script or startup method included with the server pack. The first run normally creates configuration files and stops or pauses for EULA acceptance.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA. Read the EULA, then set the generated EULA file to indicate acceptance before starting again. If the server stops with an EULA message, this is the setting it is waiting for.
- Edit server.properties. Set difficulty, online-mode behavior, view distance, simulation distance if present, maximum players, and any other values appropriate for your group. Keep a copy of the original file before making substantial changes.
- Start again and watch the console. Wait for the log to report that the server is ready before connecting. The first startup can take longer while Forge and the mods initialize.
Settings worth deciding before the first session
- Difficulty: Choose the intended challenge before players begin. Changing it later can alter the experience and does not undo progress already made.
- Online mode: Leave authentication enabled unless you have a specific, well-understood reason to change it. Disabling it changes how usernames are authenticated and creates avoidable security and identity problems.
- View distance: Start conservatively if the machine struggles. Increasing it raises the amount of world data players can request and keep active.
- Player limit: Set a realistic cap instead of relying on a host’s advertised “unlimited” slots. The pack’s published material does not establish a universal capacity.
- World name and seed: Decide these before the first run if the group wants a reproducible world. Changing them after players have started means creating or restoring a different world.
Make the server reachable
Players on the same home network may be able to connect using the host’s private address. Internet players need the server port allowed through the operating-system firewall and, on a home connection, forwarded from the router to the hosting machine.
- Find the port configured in
server.properties; the default Minecraft port is commonly used unless you changed it. - Allow that port for the Java server process in the host firewall.
- If the server is behind a router, create a port-forwarding rule to the machine’s local address. Reserve that local address so the rule does not break after a reboot.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. If it does, normal inbound forwarding may not work; a VPS or managed host avoids that limitation.
- Give players the public address and port privately. Do not publish a home IP address in a public chat or forum.
Test from outside your home network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than assuming that a successful local connection proves internet access. A failed outside test usually points to the firewall, router, carrier-grade NAT, or an incorrect address rather than a modpack problem.

- Install the same Minecraft 1.12.2 profile and Forge version required by the chosen TREPIDATION release.
- Install the identical TREPIDATION client pack release. Do not mix the latest client with an older server because both appear to target Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Let the launcher finish downloading dependencies before joining.
- Connect only after the server console reports readiness.
Common connection errors are informative. “Missing mods” or a mismatched mod list usually means the client and server archives differ. A Forge handshake failure points to a loader mismatch. A timeout or “connection refused” is generally networking or a server process that is not listening, not proof that the pack itself is broken.
Managed Trepidation hosting options
Several providers publish TREPIDATION-specific deployment instructions. Their figures are vendor specifications and marketing offers, not standardized performance tests. Confirm availability, region, billing terms, backups, and the exact pack release at checkout.

Questions to ask before renting
- Is the exact Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge build, and TREPIDATION release available, or only a generic Forge template?
- How much RAM is guaranteed to your instance rather than shared as a burst limit?
- What CPU clock and core allocation are included, and is the advertised clock a minimum or a maximum?
- Is storage SSD-based, and how much space is reserved for the world, logs, and backups?
- Are backups automatic, how many copies are retained, and can you download them?
- Is DDoS protection included, and in which geographic regions can the server run?
- Can you export the complete world and configuration files if you migrate elsewhere?
- How are modpack updates applied, and can you test an update on a copy before replacing the live world?
- What does an upgrade from 6 GB to 10 GB or more cost, and does changing tiers require downtime?
Backups, updates, and safe maintenance
There is no publisher-neutral backup schedule for TREPIDATION, so choose one that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose. At minimum, make a copy before changing the modpack, Forge version, Java runtime, or major server settings.
- Stop the server cleanly so pending world data is flushed.
- Copy the complete world directory, configuration files, server properties, scripts, and any provider-specific settings to storage separate from the live server.
- Label the backup with the date, TREPIDATION release, Minecraft version, Forge version, and Java runtime used.
- Install or test the proposed update in a separate directory or cloned server.
- Join with a test client and check world loading, dimensions, progression, quests, and mod interactions.
- Only after the copy works should you schedule downtime and update the live instance.
Never open an upgraded world for the first time without a restorable backup. If the update causes crashes or missing content, stop the server, restore the previous files, and investigate on the test copy instead of repeatedly launching the damaged live world.

The server will not launch
- Check the Java version against the exact server-pack release. The Java 21 note documented for v0.5.8.1 is explicitly version-specific.
- Read the first error and the section immediately above the stack trace; a missing file or wrong working directory is often more useful than the final line.
- Confirm that the archive was extracted completely and that the launch script is being run from the server directory.
- Verify that another process is not already using the configured port.
Players are kicked for missing mods or a bad handshake
- Compare the client and server pack filenames and release numbers.
- Confirm Minecraft is 1.12.2 on both sides.
- Confirm the Forge build is the one required by that pack release.
- Remove duplicate or manually added mods from the client, then reinstall the official client pack if necessary.
The server starts but lags during exploration
- Watch memory use and CPU load rather than adding RAM blindly.
- Lower view distance and avoid several players generating distant terrain simultaneously.
- Pre-generate the intended play area during maintenance time if your tools support it.
- Move the world to faster storage and stop unrelated disk-heavy jobs.
- Consider moving from 6 GB to a 10 GB tier only after confirming memory pressure is part of the problem.
Local players can connect, but internet players cannot
- Recheck the public address and port; local addresses are not reachable from the internet.
- Confirm both the host firewall and router forwarding rule allow the same port.
- Reserve the server’s local IP so the router rule still points to the correct machine.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or an ISP policy blocking inbound connections. Use a VPS or managed host if forwarding is impossible.
A dependable launch checklist
- Server and clients all use Minecraft 1.12.2, compatible Forge, and one TREPIDATION release.
- The host has at least 6 GB available for a small group, with additional headroom planned for heavier exploration.
- The exact Java requirement for the selected release has been verified.
- The server has been started once, the EULA has been accepted, and
server.propertieshas been reviewed. - The firewall and router rules expose only the intended game port.
- Every player has installed the identical client pack before the first session.
- A restorable backup exists before world generation and before every update.
- The group knows who will perform restarts, updates, and recovery if the host goes offline.
