How to Host a TNP Limitless 8 Modpack Server

A complete guide to hosting TNP Limitless 8: choose the right server files, use Java 21, plan RAM, configure access, synchronize clients, and recover from common failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To host TNP Limitless 8 reliably, use the matching LL8 server-files release, run it on 64-bit Java 21, give the process enough memory, and keep every player’s client on the identical Minecraft, NeoForge, modpack, and mod versions. You can run the server on your own computer or VPS for maximum control, or use a managed Minecraft host for one-click installation and simpler networking.

This guide explains how much RAM TNP Limitless 8 needs, how to install the LL8 server pack, how to host TNP Limitless 8 with friends, and what to check when a player cannot connect.

What TNP Limitless 8 requires

TNP Limitless 8 (LL8) is a large modpack for Minecraft 1.21.1 running on NeoForge. The official project describes roughly 880 mods, 36 quest chapters, and about 2,245 quests. That scale affects every hosting decision: startup takes more memory than a small vanilla server, world generation can create temporary load spikes, and a version mismatch is more likely to prevent a connection.

Use the server-files release, not a client profile

The LL8 project publishes server files separately from the client pack. Download the server-files artifact that matches the release your group intends to play. A client profile contains files and launcher metadata intended for a player’s game; it is not a substitute for the server package.

Java version

The pack author’s current instruction is to use Java 21. Install a 64-bit Java 21 runtime on the machine that will run the server, then verify the executable selected by your launch script:

java -version

The output should identify a 21.x release. If your operating system has several Java versions, a terminal check alone is not enough: confirm that the supplied server script points to the same Java 21 executable. A launcher configured for another major version can fail before the mod loader initializes.

How much RAM does TNP Limitless 8 need?

The project page states, “Recommended allocated ram is 12+ gb. (Allocate more if you can.)” It also says, “Minimum ram is 8 gb*. (Don’t go lower, it won’t work.)” The 8GB figure is a boot minimum, not a promise of smooth play. Leave memory for the operating system, Java overhead, file caching, and any other services on the machine.

Player count is only one variable. New chunk generation, several players exploring in different directions, large automated builds, and additional compatible mods can all increase usage. Begin with the published recommendation, watch actual memory and tick performance, and increase the allocation when the server approaches its limit.

Concurrent players Published guidance Practical interpretation
1–5 6–8GB (provider guidance) Because 8GB is the pack author’s boot floor, treat it as a tight configuration and leave headroom where possible.
5–15 10–12GB (provider guidance) 12GB is a sensible starting point for a lightly customized server.
15+ 12–16GB (provider guidance) Monitor real usage and plan for more memory if players generate distant terrain or add mods.

These figures are guidance from the pack page and hosting providers, not an independent benchmark. They do not guarantee a particular frame rate or server tick time on every CPU, storage device, world, or mod configuration.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting

Self-hosting means you control the files, Java process, configuration, backups, and network. It can be a spare desktop, a home server, or a rented VPS. Managed hosting places those tasks in a game panel and generally supplies a public endpoint, automated tools, and support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Self-hosted machine or VPS Managed Minecraft host
Cost No game-host subscription if you already own suitable hardware; a VPS has a recurring charge. Recurring plan cost; advertised prices and availability can change.
Control Full access to server files, scripts, Java flags, configs, and compatible additions. Panel and file access are provided, but some settings may be restricted.
Setup You install Java, extract files, configure networking, and maintain the machine. Some providers offer a Modpacks search and one-click LL8 installation.
Hardware headroom Depends on your CPU, storage, memory, and other workloads. Choose a plan with enough dedicated CPU and RAM; upgrade policy matters.
Backups You design, retain, and test your own restore points. Check whether backups are included, how often they run, and how restoration works.
Reachability You handle router rules, firewall policy, address changes, and exposure. The provider normally supplies public networking and may include DDoS protection.
Latency Players are affected by the physical location of your home connection or VPS. Select a region close to most players.
Support You troubleshoot Java, mods, operating system, and networking yourself. Support quality varies; verify what the host will actually diagnose.

A managed host may advertise a 16GB starting plan, one-click installation, SFTP or FTP access, NVMe storage, dedicated CPU and RAM, DDoS protection, and no per-slot charge. Treat those as provider-specific claims. Confirm current pricing, locations, resource guarantees, backup retention, upgrade rules, cancellation terms, and whether the exact LL8 release is available before ordering.

How do I install the LL8 server pack?

  1. Select one release. Open the TNP Limitless 8 project on CurseForge and download the LL8 server-files artifact for the release your group will use. Record the release number so every player can select the same one.
  2. Prepare a dedicated folder. Create a folder used only by this server. Keeping the world, logs, configurations, and mods together makes backups and migrations safer. Do not place the files inside a temporary download directory.
  3. Install 64-bit Java 21. Install a Java 21 runtime appropriate for your operating system. Confirm with java -version, and make sure the supplied launch script invokes that installation rather than an older system Java.
  4. Extract the archive. Unpack the server-files download directly into the dedicated folder. Preserve the directory structure supplied by the pack; moving individual libraries or mod files can break the loader’s expected paths.
  5. Run the supplied start script or command. Use the launcher included with the server package. On the first run, the server creates its initial files and may stop while requesting EULA acceptance.
  6. Accept the Minecraft EULA. Read the EULA, then change the generated EULA setting only if you agree to its terms. Start the server again and watch the console for a completed initialization message rather than assuming that a briefly opened window means it is ready.
  7. Confirm a clean local start. Check the console and log for Java, NeoForge, or missing-file errors. Stop the process cleanly before making configuration changes; force-closing it during world saves can damage the world.
  8. Set an administrator. Grant operator privileges only to trusted people through the normal server administration mechanism. Keep administrative credentials and console access private.
  9. Configure gameplay deliberately. Review the generated server properties and pack configuration after the first successful start. Change one setting at a time and keep a written record so you can reverse a problematic change.
  10. Test with one client. Before inviting a group, connect locally or from a second test account using the exact client release. This separates pack installation problems from router and firewall problems.

How do I host TNP Limitless 8 with friends?

Secure the network before publishing the address

On a home server, allow the Minecraft process through the host firewall and configure the router to forward the server’s configured listening port to the correct internal machine. The exact rule depends on your operating system, router, and server configuration; do not forward administrative services unnecessarily. On a VPS, create an inbound firewall rule for the game port and leave SSH or other management access restricted to trusted addresses or a private access method.

Keep the endpoint private until Java, authentication, operator permissions, and backups are ready. Give the address only to invited players, and avoid posting it publicly. If your home internet uses a changing public address, players may need the current address each time it changes unless you use a separately managed dynamic-DNS arrangement.

Account for upload capacity and distance

Large modpacks do not automatically require a fast download connection after installation, but the server must upload world and entity updates to every player. Several players exploring separate areas can increase outbound traffic and CPU work. A host physically closer to the group usually reduces latency; a higher RAM allocation cannot compensate for a saturated uplink or an overloaded CPU.

  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Invite players only after a controlled test

Have one player connect, travel through a small area, open storage and machines, and log out normally. Review the console and resource use before adding everyone. This exposes missing mods, Java mismatches, firewall errors, and world-generation problems while the recovery scope is small.

Install the matching client pack

  1. Install the TNP Limitless 8 client through CurseForge or another launcher that supports the pack.
  2. Select the same LL8 release used for the server. Do not let the launcher silently update one side while the other remains on an older release.
  3. Confirm Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge are selected, matching the current LL8 project target.
  4. Use Java 21 in the launcher. A client on another Java major version can fail even when its mod list appears correct.
  5. Launch once in single-player to allow files and libraries to finish installing, then close the game before connecting.
  6. Do not add, remove, or replace mods unless every connected player and the server use the same compatible change. Keep a manifest or copy of the working mods folder so a later change can be identified.

Diagnose connection failures in the right order

When a player cannot connect, compare versions before changing network settings. Most LL8 failures are caused by one side using a different file set or Java major version.

Symptom First checks Likely correction
“Incompatible” or mod-list mismatch LL8 release, Minecraft version, NeoForge version, and manually changed mods. Install the exact server release on the client and remove or restore unapproved mod changes.
Server exits during startup java -version, available memory, EULA setting, and the first error in the log. Point the script to 64-bit Java 21, correct the EULA step, or increase available memory if the process cannot initialize.
Client cannot see or reach the server Server process status, host firewall, router/VPS inbound rule, and the address supplied to the player. Allow the configured game port, forward it to the right machine, and test from outside the host’s local network.
Connection works locally but not remotely Whether the test used the private address, hairpin-NAT behavior, and the public address or DNS name. Test from a separate network, then correct the router rule or use a managed host/VPS with public networking.
Severe lag while exploring Java heap use, CPU load, disk activity, player locations, and simultaneous new-chunk generation. Reduce simultaneous exploration, pause heavy automation, move to faster storage or CPU, and add memory only when monitoring shows memory pressure.
World rollback or corruption after a crash Whether the process was killed during a save and whether a tested backup exists. Stop cleanly, restore the newest known-good copy, and investigate the crash before reintroducing changes.

Always start with the earliest meaningful error in the server log. A later “failed to connect” line is often only the consequence of an earlier Java, loader, or missing-file failure.

Backups and safe maintenance

Build a restorable backup routine

Stop the server cleanly before copying a world. Retain more than one restore point so a damaged or unwanted change is not replicated into every copy. Store at least one copy away from the server’s main disk when practical. A backup is not proven until you have restored it to a separate test folder and confirmed that the world opens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up before every major change

  • Changing the LL8 release or NeoForge version.
  • Adding, removing, or replacing mods.
  • Changing world-generation, dimension, or performance configuration.
  • Upgrading the host, moving storage, or changing the Java installation.

Keep a short change log with the date, release, files changed, and backup name. If the server behaves differently afterward, you can identify the last change instead of guessing.

Update all participants together

Announce a maintenance window, stop the server, create a backup, update the server files, and provide players with the same client release. Start the server alone first, then connect one test client before reopening it to the whole group. Never overwrite a working installation without preserving a rollback copy.

Performance practices that help LL8

  • Use a machine whose memory is larger than the Java allocation; the operating system and file cache still need room.
  • Keep the world on reliable, fast storage and avoid running unrelated heavy workloads beside the server.
  • Watch CPU, memory, disk activity, and tick responsiveness while players explore, not only while everyone is standing still.
  • Ask players to avoid generating huge areas simultaneously during the first session.
  • Change one performance-related setting at a time and record the result.
  • Do not assume that assigning more RAM fixes every lag source; CPU saturation, storage delays, network upload limits, and inefficient automation can remain.

Using a managed host instead

A managed service is useful when you do not want to configure port forwarding, maintain an operating system, or build backup scripts. The typical flow is to order a plan, open the game panel, choose Modpacks, search for TNP Limitless 8 – LL8, and click Install. After installation, verify the selected LL8 release, Java version, memory allocation, and backup settings before inviting players.

Some providers publish RAM bands by player count and offer dedicated CPU/RAM, NVMe storage, SFTP or FTP access, and DDoS protection. Those features can simplify administration, but they do not remove the need to match client and server files or to test restores. Ask these questions before paying:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is the advertised RAM dedicated, and how much can Java actually allocate?
  • Which CPU resources are guaranteed during peak periods?
  • Is the exact LL8 server release available, and how quickly are new releases added?
  • Are backups automatic, how many restore points are retained, and is restoration included?
  • Can you download the complete world and configuration through SFTP or FTP?
  • Where are the data centers, and what upgrade path exists if the group grows?
  • What are the cancellation, refund, overage, and migration terms?

A launch checklist

  • Server files and clients are from the same LL8 release.
  • Minecraft is 1.21.1 and the loader is NeoForge on both sides.
  • The server launch script uses 64-bit Java 21.
  • Memory is above the 8GB boot floor, with 12GB or more as the author’s recommendation.
  • The EULA step has been completed legitimately.
  • The firewall and router or VPS rules expose only the configured game service.
  • Operator access is limited to trusted administrators.
  • A cleanly stopped world has multiple tested backups.
  • One test player has connected before the full group is invited.

Bottom line

Run LL8 from its matching server-files package on Java 21, plan memory around the published 12GB recommendation rather than the 8GB boot minimum, and keep clients exactly synchronized with the server. Self-hosting gives the most control; a managed host trades some control for easier installation and networking. In either case, disciplined version checks, restricted access, and tested backups are what keep a large modpack world usable as your group expands.
