Set up the BRAVIA Theatre Trio (HT-A8), BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 (SA-RS9) and BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 (SA-SW9) through the Sony | BRAVIA Connect app—not ordinary Bluetooth pairing. Update the app and system software first, confirm that Sony’s current compatibility information lists your exact models for your region, then add the wireless speakers from the app’s installation or wireless-speaker connection flow.
Before you begin: verify the three-device combination
Sony restricts Rear 9 and Sub 9 accessories to compatible main devices. The official accessory guides do not establish a universal, worldwide confirmation that HT-A8, SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 can always be used together. Product availability and compatibility can differ by country, and Sony’s list can change with firmware or app updates.

Check the current Sony compatibility information for your country using these exact model numbers:
- Main system: BRAVIA Theatre Trio, model HT-A8.
- Rear speakers: BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9, model SA-RS9.
- Subwoofer: BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9, model SA-SW9.
The Sony app-compatibility support page identified HT-A8 as a BRAVIA Connect-compatible system in a model list described as current in May 2026. That date is not a permanent guarantee; use the live regional information when you buy or configure the system. If your app does not offer one of these accessories for HT-A8, stop and resolve the model or regional compatibility question with Sony rather than attempting an unrelated wireless-pairing method.

Check compatibility before you spend money
Rear 9 and Sub 9 are not interchangeable accessories. Before ordering, compare the model printed on the product listing or carton with Sony’s current regional list. “Rear 9” must correspond to SA-RS9, and “Sub 9” must correspond to SA-SW9. A retailer’s generic description, an older review or a similarly named Sony product is not a substitute for Sony’s compatibility entry.
Keep a record of your country or region, the HT-A8 model label and the accessory model numbers. This is useful if Sony support must determine whether an unavailable app option is caused by a regional restriction, a software issue or a different product variant. Do not assume that an accessory sold in another market has the same supported-main-device list.
What each optional speaker does
| Component | Model | Audio role | Connection and setup | Placement priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BRAVIA Theatre Trio | HT-A8 | Main home-theater system | Installed and configured in BRAVIA Connect | Use the app as the control point for all optional speakers |
| BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 | SA-RS9 | Left and right rear-channel pair | Added through the app’s on-screen instructions when the main device is compatible | One unit on each side behind the listening position, aimed toward it |
| BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 | SA-SW9 | Low-frequency bass channel | Added through BRAVIA Connect; software updates may be required | Choose a practical location with power and a reliable wireless path |
Rear 9 supplies two surround positions; it is not a replacement for the subwoofer. Sub 9 supplies bass and does not create a left/right rear pair. Sony’s setup material does not publish a guaranteed percentage improvement or a specific sound result from adding either accessory, so judge the upgrade by your room, listening position and app-recognized configuration rather than a promised measurement.
This distinction also affects buying order. If you want rear-channel coverage, SA-RS9 is the relevant addition. If you want more low-frequency support, SA-SW9 is the relevant addition. Buying one does not make the other unnecessary, and neither accessory should be expected to perform the other’s role.
What you need before opening the app
- The HT-A8 main system, SA-RS9 pair and SA-SW9, each with its power connection available.
- A compatible phone or tablet with the current Sony | BRAVIA Connect app.
- The same home network and account or permissions the app requests during installation.
- Several minutes with the speakers powered and within a reasonable wireless range of the main system.
- Access to Sony’s current regional compatibility information for the exact model numbers.
Plan power access before moving furniture. The Rear 9 units need separate positions on the left and right behind the seating area, while Sub 9 needs a location that can remain powered without creating a trip hazard. Keep the phone charged during updates and initial discovery; interrupting an update or closing the app mid-setup can require you to repeat the guided flow.
Do not begin by searching your phone’s Bluetooth menu. Sony’s HT-A8 Help Guide says the app is required for installation and setup, including when optional speakers are connected. Its explicit instruction is: “Be sure to use the app to install and set up, even when connecting optional speakers.”
Update the Trio and BRAVIA Connect first
Out-of-date software is a common reason an accessory is not offered or fails during linking. Sony’s HT-A8 guide advises updating the system software and BRAVIA Connect to their latest versions for available functions and performance. Sub 9 documentation also warns that the main system or subwoofer software may need an update before connection.

Why the update order matters
Complete the main Trio installation first, then update HT-A8 before connecting optional speakers. Sony’s optional-speaker guidance describes this order for applicable systems. An accessory may be physically powered and still be unavailable in the app until the main system and app are current. If the app offers an accessory update, let that update finish before continuing rather than abandoning the wizard to try a different pairing method.
Step-by-step: install or add the Rear 9 and Sub 9
1. Start the HT-A8 installation in BRAVIA Connect
Open BRAVIA Connect and choose the option to install or set up the BRAVIA Theatre Trio. If HT-A8 has already been configured, use the app’s add-device or accessory flow after completing updates. Keep the phone close enough for the app to communicate with the system during discovery.
2. Follow the app’s accessory prompts
When the app asks about optional speakers, choose the wireless-speaker or accessory setup path. The Rear 9 and Sub 9 guides both direct owners of a BRAVIA Connect-compatible main device to begin in the app and follow its on-screen instructions. Accept any request to update an accessory before continuing.

3. Add the Rear 9 pair
Power both SA-RS9 units and identify them as the left and right rear speakers when the app requests their positions. Do not substitute a phone-level Bluetooth pairing process. The app is responsible for linking the pair to HT-A8 and assigning their roles.
Keep both rear speakers powered during discovery. If the app asks you to identify left and right positions, make the selection deliberately; placing a speaker on the opposite side later can make the soundstage confusing even though the wireless connection remains active. Finish the pair’s setup before moving either unit to its final location.
4. Add Sub 9
Power the SA-SW9 and select the subwoofer option in the app’s guided setup. If the app reports that an update is required, complete it before retrying the wireless connection. Keep the subwoofer close enough for initial discovery; you can refine its room position after the connection is confirmed.
5. Wait for a connected status
Do not treat a detected name, blinking indicator or partially completed wizard as a finished setup. Continue until BRAVIA Connect reports each accessory as connected. If only one rear speaker or the subwoofer appears, finish the app’s recovery steps before moving equipment around for final placement.
6. Add one accessory at a time if discovery is confusing
If the app presents several devices or repeatedly loses track of an accessory, keep the main system and the affected speaker close together, complete that accessory’s guided connection, and then proceed to the next one. This is not a replacement for Sony’s prescribed flow; it simply reduces the chance that you are trying to diagnose two incomplete links at once. Always use the accessory option the app provides for HT-A8.

Place the Rear 9 speakers for a usable rear soundstage
Once the app has linked the pair, place one Rear 9 unit to the left and one to the right behind the principal listening position. Aim both toward the listening area. Sony recommends positioning them near ear height, keeping their tops unobstructed, and avoiding a shelf enclosure or a location immediately beneath a ceiling.
- Left/right symmetry: Keep the two units at comparable distances from the seating position where the room allows.
- Height: A stand or surface near seated ear level generally follows Sony’s guidance better than a low floor position.
- Clear tops: Do not cover the top surfaces or push the speakers into a tight shelf.
- Orientation: Face each speaker toward the listening position rather than toward a wall.
- Power: Leave enough clearance for safe, reliable power connections and avoid routing cables where they can be pulled.
These are placement recommendations, not a promise of a particular surround effect. Room shape, seating, walls and furniture determine how the rear channels are perceived.
Place the speakers for the primary seat, not for an unused corner. If one side of the room is open and the other has a wall, keep the units as balanced as the room permits and avoid hiding either speaker behind a large piece of furniture. After every substantial move, open BRAVIA Connect and verify that both units remain connected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlace Sub 9 without sacrificing the wireless link
Sub 9 has a different job, so it does not need to sit behind the listener with the Rear 9 pair. Put it where the room and power access permit, then check that the wireless path to HT-A8 remains dependable. Large obstructions and excessive distance can make the link unstable.
For initial setup, use a location near the main system. After BRAVIA Connect shows a connected state, move the subwoofer to the position that works best in the room, checking the connection again after each substantial move. If the link drops, return it closer to HT-A8 and reduce obstacles before trying another location.
There is no Sony-published placement distance or guaranteed bass result in the setup guidance. Treat the app’s connection status as the practical limit, and choose a location that leaves the subwoofer powered and accessible for future updates or troubleshooting.
Confirm the finished configuration
- Open the HT-A8 device page in BRAVIA Connect.
- Check that both Rear 9 units are listed as the rear left and rear right speakers.
- Check that Sub 9 is listed as the connected subwoofer.
- Play familiar content with surround and bass information and listen from the normal seating position.
- If a component is missing from the app, treat that as an incomplete setup even if another component is producing sound.
The app’s connected status is the important checkpoint. A speaker that has power but is not listed as connected has not completed the HT-A8 setup.
Use a simple post-setup check
Test after the speakers reach their intended positions, not only while they are next to HT-A8. Confirm the rear pair is still identified left and right, then check Sub 9 after any move. If the app reports a connection problem, solve that wireless issue before judging audio. A change in room placement can alter what you hear without indicating a failed setup, while an accessory disappearing from the app indicates a connection problem.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The app cannot find Rear 9 or Sub 9
- Confirm the main device is HT-A8 and that the accessory model is SA-RS9 or SA-SW9.
- Check Sony’s current compatibility information for your country before trying further pairing steps.
- Update BRAVIA Connect and HT-A8 system software.
- Power the accessory and restart the app, then return to the guided accessory setup.
If the exact accessory is not offered for HT-A8, do not force the process through a generic Bluetooth menu. The accessory guides limit connection to compatible main devices.
Pairing starts but fails or times out
- Open BRAVIA Connect’s wireless-speaker connection settings for HT-A8.
- Move the affected speaker closer to the Trio.
- Remove or reduce physical obstacles between the speaker and main system.
- Restart the speaker, reopen the connection settings and attempt the app-guided link again.
- Check for a software update on both the main system and the affected accessory.
Sony’s support guidance specifically recommends moving the speaker closer, clearing obstacles and restarting it when a wireless link is unstable.
Only one Rear 9 unit connects
Keep both rear units powered and together during the initial app setup. Re-enter the accessory flow and follow the prompts for the left/right pair. If the app still recognizes only one unit, restart the unrecognized speaker and repeat the wireless-speaker connection process. A single connected rear unit is not equivalent to a completed Rear 9 pair.

Return the subwoofer nearer to HT-A8 and remove obstacles along the wireless path. Verify its connected state in BRAVIA Connect before testing another location. If the problem returns, restart Sub 9 and retry from the app’s wireless-speaker connection settings.
The accessories show as connected but there is no expected audio
First confirm that BRAVIA Connect still lists every component as connected. Then check the content and listening position. If one accessory disappears from the app, resolve the wireless connection before investigating the program material. Sony’s setup documents do not establish a guaranteed sound improvement for this combination, so the absence of a dramatic change is not by itself proof that pairing failed.
The app shows an accessory but will not finish setup
Do not leave the guided flow to try ordinary Bluetooth pairing. Complete any pending software update, keep the speaker close to HT-A8, restart the affected speaker and return to BRAVIA Connect’s wireless-speaker connection settings. If the accessory remains unavailable, compare the exact model and region with Sony’s compatibility information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common setup pitfalls to avoid
- Buying by name alone: Confirm SA-RS9 and SA-SW9, not merely “Rear 9” or “Sub 9.”
- Skipping the regional check: Sony’s supported combinations can vary by market.
- Using phone Bluetooth: HT-A8 optional-speaker installation belongs in BRAVIA Connect.
- Updating only the app: The main system and, where requested, the accessory may also need current software.
- Moving speakers before discovery: Start close to HT-A8, complete linking, then optimize room placement.
- Assuming power means pairing: A powered speaker is not finished until the app reports it connected.
- Enclosing Rear 9: Sony advises clear tops and placement near ear height, not inside a shelf or immediately below a ceiling.
When to stop and ask Sony
Contact Sony support with the exact regional model numbers when the live compatibility information does not clearly list the combination, when firmware updates repeatedly fail, or when the app never offers an accessory that should be supported. Include the HT-A8, SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 model labels, your country, the BRAVIA Connect version and the system-software versions. This gives support the information needed to distinguish a compatibility restriction from a temporary wireless or software problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pair Rear 9 or Sub 9 directly from my phone’s Bluetooth settings?
No. Sony requires BRAVIA Connect for HT-A8 installation and optional-speaker setup. Use the app’s wireless-speaker or accessory flow instead of ordinary Bluetooth pairing.
Are SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 confirmed to work with every HT-A8 system?
Do not assume universal compatibility. Check Sony’s current compatibility information for your country and confirm that HT-A8, SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 are listed together before buying or setting them up.
What is the difference between Rear 9 and Sub 9?
Rear 9 is a left/right rear-channel speaker pair. Sub 9 is the bass subwoofer. One does not replace the function of the other.
Should I update the speakers before pairing them?
Update BRAVIA Connect and HT-A8 first. During accessory setup, install any Rear 9 or Sub 9 software update the app requests; Sony notes that accessory or main-system updates may be required.
Where should I put the Rear 9 speakers?
Place one on each side behind the main listening position, aimed toward it and near seated ear height. Keep their tops clear, avoid enclosing them in shelves and do not place them immediately beneath a ceiling.
Where should I put Sub 9 during setup?
Start with Sub 9 near HT-A8 so discovery is reliable. After the app reports a connection, move it to a practical room location with power and check the connection again.
What should I do if pairing fails?
Open BRAVIA Connect’s wireless-speaker connection settings, update software, move the affected speaker closer, reduce obstacles and restart the speaker before trying the app-guided connection again.

BRAVIA Connect should list both SA-RS9 units as rear left and rear right and SA-SW9 as the connected subwoofer. Power or a detected name alone does not confirm a finished link.
The Bottom Line
Verify the regional HT-A8, SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 combination first. Then update HT-A8 and BRAVIA Connect, add both Rear 9 units and Sub 9 through the app, place the rears near ear height behind the listener, and use the app’s connected status to confirm the finished setup.
