What “without port forwarding” actually changes
A normal Terraria server listens on your host computer and must be reachable by players on the internet. Traditional hosting creates an inbound rule in the router that sends traffic to that computer. Port forwarding is not the only way to create that path.

Because the router already permits the outbound connection, no inbound forwarding rule is required. The relay agent must remain running on the host, but players connect with ordinary Terraria multiplayer tools.
A virtual-LAN VPN takes a different approach. It places the host and players on a private software network so that friends connect to the host’s VPN address. This avoids router changes, but every player has to install and join the same VPN network.

No universal price, latency, uptime, or service-limit figure applies to all relay or VPN services. Those conditions depend on the provider, region, plan, and current network path. Choose based on who must install software and whether you need a public endpoint or a private group network.
Method 1: Host a Terraria relay tunnel
Playit describes itself as a global proxy that lets you host a server without port forwarding and says that only the host runs the agent. The procedure below applies to a vanilla dedicated server and can be adapted to a tModLoader server.

Download or install the Terraria dedicated-server files on the computer that will stay online. For a modded world, install the tModLoader dedicated-server files instead. Keep the server files in a folder you can back up and access easily; the world file is valuable and should not be stored only on a temporary desktop location.
2. Create or select a world
Start the dedicated server and choose an existing world or create a new one. The server process must finish loading the world before players can join. If you are migrating an existing world, copy the world file into the server’s worlds folder or provide its full path in the server configuration.
3. Confirm the local listening port
Terraria’s documented standard server port is 7777. Leave it at that value unless another application already uses it or you have a specific reason to change it. If you select a different unused port, record the value exactly; the relay must forward to that local port and players must use the public port shown by the relay.

4. Permit the server through the host firewall
Port forwarding and firewall rules are separate. Even with an untouched router, the operating system may block the Terraria or tModLoader process. When the server first starts, allow it on the appropriate private network profile. If you create a manual rule, permit the chosen local listening port for the server application. Do not disable the firewall globally as a workaround.
If friends can reach the relay endpoint but the tunnel reports a refused or unreachable local service, return to this step. A running server process is not proof that the firewall allows connections from the relay agent.
5. Install and sign in to the relay agent
Install the Playit agent on the same computer as the Terraria server. The agent creates the outbound connection to the relay. You do not install it on each friend’s computer.
6. Create a Terraria tunnel
- Open the agent’s management page and create a new tunnel for Terraria.
- Choose the local address and port where the dedicated server is listening. For the normal setup, that is the host computer and port 7777.
- Let the service assign or display the public tunnel endpoint.
- Keep the tunnel mapped to the same local port whenever you restart the server, unless you intentionally changed the server configuration.
7. Give friends the endpoint
Send friends the public hostname or address and port displayed by the tunnel. In Terraria, they open Multiplayer → Join via IP, enter the relay address, and enter the relay port. They should not enter your private home address or the local-only address shown in the server console.
8. Keep both processes running
The world is available only while the Terraria dedicated-server process and the relay agent are running. Start the Terraria server first, wait until it is listening, and then start or verify the tunnel. If the computer sleeps, reboots, loses its network connection, or closes either process, players will be disconnected until both services return.

Running tModLoader through a relay
Modded connectivity adds a compatibility requirement: the server and every client must use the same tModLoader version and the same mod files. A relay can publish the connection, but it cannot make incompatible content work.
Install the tModLoader dedicated server
The official tModLoader Dedicated Server Utils documentation describes installation through SteamCMD or a GitHub release, unattended startup with serverconfig.txt, and mod installation. Use the documented method that matches your operating system and keep the server’s mod directory separate from unrelated client files.
Set the server configuration
In serverconfig.txt, define the world path, maximum players, password, and port. Use the standard port 7777 unless you need another unused value. If you do not want the server to attempt automatic UPnP, start it with the -noupnp option. UPnP is not required for a relay tunnel, so disabling that attempt can make the intended network design clearer.
Start tModLoader with the configuration loaded, verify that the world opens without missing-mod errors, and only then create the relay tunnel. The tunnel should target the exact local port configured in the file.
Match the client installations
- Install the same tModLoader release on the host and every player’s computer.
- Install the same mods, with matching versions where the mod manager specifies them.
- Make sure the world is loaded by the modded server, not by a separate vanilla Terraria process.
- When troubleshooting, test with the complete mod list documented by the server rather than adding or removing mods during a connection attempt.
A player who can reach the relay but receives a content, version, or checksum error has a mod-compatibility problem, not a port-forwarding problem.

Method 2: Use a virtual-LAN VPN
The Terraria Dedicated Server documentation identifies Hamachi and Radmin VPN as alternatives when a port cannot be forwarded. This method creates a private network instead of a public relay endpoint. It is straightforward for a trusted group, but every participant must install the VPN software.
Host setup
- Install the same VPN application that your friends will use.
- Create a private network and set a strong network password.
- Note the host’s VPN address shown by the application.
- Start the Terraria or tModLoader dedicated server on the chosen local port, normally 7777.
- Allow the server through the computer firewall on the VPN network profile and the server port.
Friend setup
- Each friend installs the same VPN client and joins your private network.
- Confirm that the VPN client shows the host as online.
- In Terraria, open Multiplayer → Join via IP.
- Enter the host’s VPN address and the Terraria server port.
Do not give the VPN network credentials to people you do not trust. Members of that private network may be able to reach other services that you expose on the host, depending on the VPN and firewall rules. Restrict the firewall to the game server where possible.
VPN problems to expect
- Friend cannot see the host: verify that both clients joined the same network and that the host is online in the VPN application.
- VPN address responds but Terraria times out: check the host firewall and confirm that the server is listening on the same port you entered.
- Intermittent play: VPN routing, Wi-Fi quality, or a changing network path can interrupt the private link even though the Terraria process remains active.
- Modded connection rejected: compare tModLoader and mod versions before changing network settings.
Method 3: Try Steam Host & Play first
For a small group already using Steam, Terraria’s Host & Play flow is the fastest experiment. Start a multiplayer session, invite friends through Steam, and have them accept the invitation. tModLoader configuration documentation also covers Steam support and friends/private lobby modes.
Treat this as a convenience feature rather than a guaranteed replacement for networking. The cited Steam and tModLoader documentation does not promise successful traversal through every NAT type or platform restriction. If an invitation fails, do not keep changing router settings at random: switch to a relay tunnel or a virtual-LAN VPN.
Port, player-count, and firewall details
Which port does Terraria use?
The documented default is port 7777. The server configuration can change it. Every component must agree: the dedicated server, the relay’s local target, the VPN connection details, and the port entered by players.
How many players can join?
The Official Terraria Wiki documents a default maximum of 16 players for a server. Set a lower maximum in the server configuration if your world, computer, or group requires it. A relay or VPN does not increase the game’s configured player limit.

Why is a firewall rule still necessary?
The router controls traffic between the internet and your home network; the computer firewall controls traffic arriving at the host itself. A relay or VPN avoids the first barrier but not necessarily the second. Permit the game server on the intended network profile and port, then test again before weakening any other security control.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Privacy, security, and reliability considerations
Home-IP privacy
A relay gives players the relay address instead of requiring you to publish your home address. A VPN keeps the group private but still gives VPN members a route to the host’s VPN address. Neither option makes the host computer anonymous to the service that carries the connection.
Password protection
Set a Terraria server password, especially when using a public relay endpoint. Share it only with the intended players. For a VPN, protect the VPN network itself as well as the Terraria world password.
World backups
Relay and VPN software do not back up worlds. Copy the world file periodically, and make a backup before changing tModLoader versions, replacing mods, or testing a new server configuration. Keep at least one copy outside the active server folder.
Uptime expectations
These methods still depend on the host computer, operating system, internet connection, and power. A sleeping laptop or closed server window ends the session. If you need a world available around the clock, a separately hosted VPS or managed game server is a different decision involving its own cost, administration, and security trade-offs.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose a relay when friends are on different networks and you want only the host to install extra software.
- Choose a virtual-LAN VPN when the group is small, trusted, and willing to install the same client.
- Try Steam Host & Play first when everyone already uses Steam, but keep a relay or VPN plan ready.
- Use tModLoader only when server and clients can maintain matching versions and mods.
- Keep the dedicated server, firewall rule, and relay or VPN settings aligned to one documented port, normally 7777.
For most friends joining from separate homes, the relay route is the least disruptive: run the Terraria server locally, map its listening port through the agent, and send the public endpoint. The router stays unchanged, while the host retains control of the world and can stop the session by closing the server.
