SkyFactory One runs on Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge. For a reliable server, use Java 8, 11, or 14 (Java 16 is unsupported), install the current pack release listed by CurseForge—version 1.0.7, dated June 15, 2024—and set topography-preset=void in server.properties before the first world generation. You can run the files on your own computer or select a managed host that offers SkyFactory One in its modpack installer.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.

Server requirements
Minecraft, Forge, and pack files
CurseForge lists SkyFactory One for Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge. The latest release shown in the supplied records is version 1.0.7, published June 15, 2024, and server files are available. Version 1.0.5 server files are also listed, so make sure the server and every player use one identical release.

Java
Install a 64-bit Java runtime in version 8, 11, or 14. Both the ATLauncher and CurseForge pack information state that Java 16 is not supported for clients or servers. Confirm the runtime that your shell or hosting panel will actually use, rather than checking only which Java versions are installed.
On a self-hosted machine, run:
java -version
The output should identify Java 8, 11, or 14. If it reports Java 16, change the system default or configure the server launch script to use an approved Java executable. If multiple installations are present, an absolute path to the approved executable avoids accidentally launching with the wrong one.

Memory
CurseForge recommends at least 4 GB of RAM for the client. Server guidance is higher: plan for roughly 5 to 8 GB for a small private server, and reserve additional memory when more players or large automation builds will be active. These are planning ranges rather than a guarantee; the correct allocation depends on the operating system, player count, loaded chunks, and other services sharing the machine.

Storage and access
- Use an SSD when possible, because modded world saves and chunk generation perform many small reads and writes.
- Leave free disk space for the world, backups, logs, and future pack files instead of allocating the entire drive to the initial installation.
- Ensure you can edit text files in the server directory and control the Java process or hosting panel.
- For an Internet server, arrange the firewall and router rules required by the port configured in your server settings. Keep access limited to trusted players while testing.
Choose a hosting method
Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives you control over Java, files, backups, and upgrades. It is suitable for a home computer or a rented virtual machine that you administer. You are responsible for keeping the operating system secure, maintaining uptime, forwarding the game connection through your network when necessary, and restoring backups if a world is damaged.
Managed hosting
A managed game host can provide a pre-installed modpack, a web panel, automated restarts, and easier scaling. Search the provider’s modpack installer for “SkyFactory One” and confirm that it offers Minecraft 1.16.5 and the same pack release your players will install. The supplied records identify BisectHosting, ScalaCube, MTXServ, Apex, and Stickypiston as hosts that list SkyFactory One; prices, resource limits, and affiliate terms were not established, so check those details directly before purchasing.
Self-hosted installation
The official pages do not expose a single, fully documented command sequence in the available material. Treat the server archive’s included instructions and launch files as authoritative for the exact Forge file names. The following order prevents the most common setup mistakes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Choose the release. Open the SkyFactory One page on CurseForge and select the server files for the release you intend to run. At the last recorded check, 1.0.7 was the newest release. Download the archive to a new, dedicated directory rather than mixing it with another modpack.
- Install an approved Java runtime. Install Java 8, 11, or 14 in 64-bit form. Do not use Java 16. Run
java -versionfrom the same account that will start the server so you verify the runtime used by the process. - Extract the server files. Unpack the downloaded archive without changing its directory structure. Keep the original archive until the server has started and players have connected successfully; it can be useful for recovering a missing file.
- Install or complete Forge as directed by the pack files. SkyFactory One uses Forge for Minecraft 1.16.5. If the archive includes a Forge installer or a setup script, run it exactly as its accompanying instructions specify, using the server directory as the destination. Do not substitute a Forge build for another Minecraft version.
- Perform one controlled first launch. Start the included Forge server script or the launch command supplied with the archive. Stop after the initial files are created if you need to edit configuration before world generation. Avoid renaming generated files: launch scripts often reference their exact names.
- Set the void-world preset before generation. Open
server.propertiesin a plain-text editor and add or change this line:
topography-preset=void
ATLauncher specifies this property for creating the SkyBlock world. Save the file before the first normal launch. An alternative setting sometimes suggested online is level-type=voidworld, but the source for that recommendation was not identified and it should not replace ATLauncher’s documented topography-preset=void setting.

- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
- Start the server again and watch the console. Allow world generation to finish before inviting players. A successful result is a new void SkyBlock environment rather than a conventional overworld. Record any Java, Forge, or missing-mod error exactly as shown; changing several files at once makes diagnosis harder.
- Allocate memory in the launch configuration. Use the memory controls in the supplied launch script or your process manager. Begin within the 5–8 GB server planning range, leave enough RAM for the operating system, and increase allocation only when logs or in-game behavior show that the current amount is insufficient. Never assign all physical memory to Java.
- Install the matching client pack. Every player should install SkyFactory One for Minecraft 1.16.5 through CurseForge or ATLauncher and select the same pack release as the server. A client on a different release, loader, or Java line may fail before it reaches the server.
- Test with one player first. Connect from the same network or a permitted remote network, confirm that the spawn area is void SkyBlock, and check that blocks, inventories, and chunk loading behave normally. Only then open access to the rest of the group.
Using a managed host’s modpack installer
Panel labels vary, but the workflow documented for an Apex-style installer is representative:
- Open the server control panel and enter the Game File or modpack selector.
- Search for SkyFactory One, not SkyFactory 5 or the original Sky Factory pack.
- Select the listed Minecraft 1.16.5 release and use Change Version if the panel presents multiple builds.
- Choose Generate New World when prompted so the selected pack creates its world with the installer’s configuration.
- Click Restart Now and wait for the console to finish loading before connecting.
After installation, inspect the panel’s Java selector. It must use Java 8, 11, or 14; a host that forces Java 16 is unsuitable for this pack. If the panel exposes server.properties, verify that topography-preset=void is present before generating a replacement world.
Read the host’s reinstall warning carefully. MTXServ’s documented workflow, for example, warns that a full reinstall removes server data. Use a “fully reinstall” action only on a new server or after downloading a verified backup of the world, configuration, and player data.

World generation and recovery
The server created a normal overworld
Stop the server, back up the current directory, and confirm that topography-preset=void is present exactly in server.properties. World-generation settings generally affect a newly created world; changing the property after the world exists may not convert it. Regenerate only after preserving the existing world, because deleting or replacing it destroys builds and player progress.
The world is void but players spawn incorrectly
Verify that the server release, client release, and Forge version all match. Do not attempt to repair a mismatched installation by copying random mods from another pack. Restore the original server archive or reinstall the same SkyFactory One release, then repeat the controlled first launch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting Java and startup failures
“Java 16 is not supported” or an immediate crash
Check java -version in the server account’s environment and in the hosting panel’s runtime selector. Replace Java 16 with Java 8, 11, or 14, then restart the server. If a script contains a hard-coded executable path, update that path rather than changing only the system-wide default.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Forge or mod-loading errors
Confirm that the server files are for Minecraft 1.16.5 and that Forge was installed into the intended directory. Compare the pack release number on the server with the one selected by each client. Keep the complete console error and the first occurrence of the failure; later messages are often consequences rather than causes.
Out-of-memory errors or severe lag
Check the Java heap allocation and the amount of free memory left for the operating system. Move toward the upper end of the 5–8 GB planning range for a growing private server, or add more capacity for a larger community. Reduce simultaneous chunk loading and automation activity while testing; increasing Java memory cannot fix an incompatible Java version or a damaged world.
Players cannot connect
First test locally, then test from the intended remote network. Confirm that the server process is running, that the configured connection port is allowed through the host firewall and home router when applicable, and that clients are using the identical pack and Minecraft version. A successful local connection with failed remote connections usually indicates network routing or firewall configuration rather than a modpack problem.
Backups, upgrades, and routine administration
Back up before changes
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory. Keep dated copies of the world, server.properties, launch configuration, and any permissions or whitelist files. Store at least one copy outside the server machine. A backup made while files are actively changing may be incomplete.

Do not replace files in a running world. Read the release notes for the target SkyFactory One version, copy the existing server to a separate backup, and test the new files with a disposable world first. Require every player to move to the same release before opening the upgraded world to the group.
Keeping the server maintainable
- Keep Java on one of the supported lines and document which executable the server uses.
- Record the pack release, Forge build, memory allocation, and world-generation setting for anyone else administering the server.
- Review logs after each restart for repeated errors instead of waiting for players to report missing machines or chunks.
- Use a scheduled restart or host control-panel task only after confirming that it performs a clean shutdown and preserves backups.
When to choose each approach
| Priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum control and no panel fee | Self-hosting | You select Java, files, memory, backups, and network policy. |
| Fastest setup for a group | Managed host | A modpack selector can install SkyFactory One and restart the server without manual Forge file handling. |
| Learning and troubleshooting access | Self-hosting | You can inspect launch output and configuration directly. |
| Continuous uptime and less maintenance | Managed host | The provider supplies the panel, machine, and often automated operations, subject to its plan limits. |
The dependable configuration is the same either way: SkyFactory One on Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge, an approved Java 8/11/14 runtime, a server release matched to every client, and topography-preset=void set before the first world is generated.
