The reliable way to host SkyFactory 2.5 is to run FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5, the Minecraft 1.7.10 Forge pack, with exactly the same pack build on every client. You can either use a host’s one-click installer or download the official server files and run Forge yourself. The newest file listed for the pack is version 2.5.9, dated December 10, 2021; its changelog says the server files were updated to address a security vulnerability.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
For a small private server, a provider that includes the pack is the fastest route. Self-hosting gives you control over Forge, Java, memory and backups, but requires more administration. This guide covers both routes, version selection, installation, networking, upgrades and the failures most likely to stop players connecting.

SkyFactory 2.5 is distributed as FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5 for Minecraft 1.7.10, using the Forge mod loader. It is not a vanilla server and it is not interchangeable with another SkyFactory release. The server, the launcher profile and every player’s client must use the same mod set and compatible versions.
The official file listing uses versioned server archives. An example filename is FTBPresentsSkyfactory25-2.5.6-1.7.10.zip. Select the exact build you intend to run rather than downloading an identically named third-party archive. The newest listed build is 2.5.9, released on 2021-12-10; its changelog notes a server-file update that patches a security vulnerability.

Choose hosted or self-hosted
| Factor | Hosted server | Self-hosted server |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Low: choose the pack in a control panel and start it. | Higher: download files, install Forge, accept the EULA, configure the process and manage networking. |
| Cost | Recurring rental charge; the amount depends on provider, memory and billing term. | No server-rental bill, but you provide the computer, storage, electricity and internet connection. |
| Control | Convenient controls, but JVM and operating-system access may be limited. | Full control of Java, Forge, memory limits, files, backups and scripts. |
| Version pinning | Easy if the panel exposes the exact 2.5.x build. | Exact archives and generated Forge files remain under your control. |
| Best for | Players who want the shortest path to a joinable world. | Administrators comfortable with command lines, firewalls and routine backups. |
Route 1: use a one-click host
1. Confirm that the pack is available
Choose a provider whose installer explicitly lists FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5. Do not assume that an entry labelled only “SkyFactory” is the 2.5 pack; other SkyFactory versions use different Minecraft and mod versions.
2. Select the exact build
After creating the server, open the modpack or version selector and choose the same 2.5.x release that your players will install. If the panel offers only a generic “latest” option, check which file it deploys before creating the world. For a new installation, 2.5.9 is the newest file in the official listing, but an existing group may need to remain on an older build for compatibility.

| Memory guidance | What it means |
|---|---|
| 2 GB | BisectHosting’s SkyFactory hosting page recommends 2 GB. Treat this as a provider recommendation, not a guaranteed capacity for every world or player count. |
| 3 GB | A separate hosting recommendation describes 3 GB as a minimum, but that guidance is not independently verified here. |
| 4 GB or more | The same unverified guidance suggests 4 GB or more for a server used by friends or the public. Actual needs depend on loaded chunks, automation, dimensions and concurrent players. |
Start with the provider’s 2 GB recommendation for a small private group and watch the panel’s memory graph. Increase the allocation when the server repeatedly pauses, runs out of memory or cannot keep up after several players explore and build at once. More RAM cannot correct a mismatched modpack or an unsuitable Forge installation.
4. Install and start the instance
- Open the provider’s game or modpack installer.
- Choose FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5, then select the required 2.5.x build.
- Let the panel download and unpack the server files.
- Open the console and start the server. The first launch may generate configuration files and a world before a normal prompt appears.
- Read the console for an EULA request, crash report or missing-file error. Do not hand players an address until the server remains running without a fatal error.
5. Make every player match the server
Each player should install the same SkyFactory 2.5 build, Minecraft 1.7.10 profile and mod list. The launcher brand itself is not the important compatibility variable; the server and client files and versions are. That principle is commonly stated in SkyFactory server documentation, although one such guide addresses SkyFactory 4 rather than 2.5, so use the 2.5 pack’s own file list as the authority.

6. Configure administration and backups
Use the host panel or the server console to grant operator access, add a whitelist and schedule backups if those controls are available. Before changing the pack version, reinstalling Forge or restoring a world, download a copy of the entire server directory, including the world, configuration and scripts. Keep at least one backup that is not stored on the same server.
Route 2: self-host the server
Prerequisites and limits of the available documentation
- A computer that can stay online while players connect, with enough free disk space for the server, backups and world growth.
- A stable network connection and permission to change the local firewall and router.
- The official SkyFactory 2.5 server archive from the pack’s CurseForge file listing.
- The Forge build specified by the pack’s server files or readme.
- A Java runtime compatible with that Forge build. The exact Java version for SkyFactory 2.5 is not established in the available pack information, so do not assume a particular Java release; verify the requirement in the downloaded server readme or Forge installer.
1. Download the official server archive
Open the official CurseForge file listing for FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5 and choose the server file for your target release. Prefer the newest 2.5.9 archive unless your clients or an established world must stay on another version. Check the filename carefully: the 1.7.10 designation and the 2.5.x number should match your intended installation.

2. Create a dedicated directory
Make a new directory used only by this server, then place the downloaded ZIP there. Keeping the world, configuration, logs and launch files together makes backups and version changes safer.
mkdir skyfactory25
cd skyfactory25
unzip FTBPresentsSkyfactory25-2.5.9-1.7.10.zip
On Windows, extract the archive with File Explorer or an archive utility into the same dedicated directory. Do not merge it into another modpack’s folder.

3. Install the pack’s Forge server
Read the extracted server instructions and use the Forge installer/build they specify. The exact Forge build for 2.5.9 is not confirmed by the available listing, so do not substitute a current Forge release merely because it is newer. A typical installer command has this form:
java -jar <forge-installer>.jar --installServer
Replace the filename with the installer supplied for the pack. A successful installation normally creates a Forge server JAR and supporting libraries or scripts. If the readme supplies a launch script, use that script instead of inventing a different JAR name.
4. Accept the Minecraft EULA
Start the server once so it can create eula.txt, then open that file and change only the value to eula=true after reading the Minecraft EULA. For a shell-based setup, the equivalent command is:
printf 'eula=truen' > eula.txt
Do not overwrite an existing server directory with this command; it is shown only for a newly created directory where the file has just been generated.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
5. Launch Forge with an explicit memory limit
Use the generated script or the Forge server JAR named by the pack instructions. A generic headless launch looks like this, but both the JAR filename and memory values must match your machine:
java -Xms2G -Xmx2G -jar <forge-server-jar>.jar nogui
The 2 GB values mirror the provider recommendation, not a universal requirement. Increase or decrease them according to available system memory and observed server behavior; leave enough memory for the operating system and any other services. Never allocate all physical RAM to Java.
6. Let the first world generation finish
The initial launch performs library checks, creates configuration files and generates the world, so it is slower than later starts. A 3–7 minute first-boot estimate appears in a SkyFactory 4 guide and should be treated only as a rough indication, not a measured SkyFactory 2.5 time. Watch the console for a ready message rather than terminating the process because it appears idle.
7. Open the network path
Allow the Java process through the host operating system’s firewall. If players are outside your home network, configure the router to forward the Minecraft server port to the hosting computer and give that computer a stable local address. Test from a separate network; connecting from inside the same LAN can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong. Do not publish your home address broadly, and remove the forwarding rule if you shut the server down permanently.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
8. Test with one matching client
- Install the exact SkyFactory 2.5 release used by the server.
- Launch the Minecraft 1.7.10 Forge profile created for that pack.
- Connect using the server’s local address from the same network or its external address from outside.
- Check that the player can enter, place a block and reconnect after a restart before inviting everyone else.
Version control and upgrades
Record the pack filename, Forge build, Java runtime used, memory flags and date of each change. Version-named files make this practical: keep the original ZIP and a copy of the working server directory so you can identify exactly what changed.
Before an upgrade:
- Stop the server cleanly from the console; do not kill the process while it is saving.
- Copy the complete server directory, especially the world,
config, modsand any scripts. - Install the new server files in a separate directory or preserve the old directory as a rollback copy.
- Apply the pack’s specified Forge build and compare the generated mod list with the clients.
- Start the upgraded copy and test it with one player before switching the public address.
Moving from an older build to 2.5.9 is sensible when your clients can also update, because the 2.5.9 changelog reports a server-file security fix. If the world is important, keep the old backup until the new build has been played successfully.
Common failures and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Incompatible mod list” or a client disconnects during login | The client and server use different pack builds, Forge builds or mods. | Compare the exact 2.5.x filename and mod list on both sides. Reinstall the client profile or server archive rather than copying individual mods at random. |
| The server exits immediately after launch | EULA not accepted, wrong Java runtime, missing libraries or an incorrect Forge JAR command. | Read the first fatal console message, confirm eula=true, use the Java requirement documented by the pack/Forge files, and run the supplied launch script or correct installer output. |
| Players on the same network can connect, but internet players cannot | Firewall or router forwarding is missing, or the forwarded computer’s local address changed. | Allow Java through the firewall, reserve the host’s local address, verify the forwarding rule and test from a different network. |
| The server freezes or reports out-of-memory errors | Memory allocation is too low for the loaded world and player activity, or another process is consuming RAM. | Measure usage, close competing applications and raise -Xmx only within the machine’s available memory. More allocation will not fix version mismatches. |
| The first start appears stuck | Forge is generating files or the world. | Check CPU, disk and console output and allow the initial generation to finish. Do not use a SkyFactory 4 timing estimate as a hard 2.5 requirement. |
| A reinstall appears to erase progress | The world directory was replaced or the backup was incomplete. | Stop the server, restore the backed-up world into the new installation and verify the folder name before starting again. Always back up before reinstalling. |
Operational checklist
- Server and clients use the same FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5 release.
- The selected archive is from the official CurseForge file listing.
- Forge is the build specified by that release’s server files.
- Java satisfies that Forge build’s documented requirement; no unsupported version assumption is being made.
- The EULA is accepted and the server reaches a ready state without a fatal console error.
- Memory is monitored rather than chosen solely by a generic number.
- Firewall and router rules expose only the intended server service.
- Backups include the world, configuration, mods and launch files.
- Every upgrade is tested on a copy before the live world is changed.
Which route should you use?
Choose a hosted instance when your priority is getting a small group online quickly and you are comfortable trading some JVM and operating-system control for a monthly fee. Choose self-hosting when you need exact version pinning, custom scripts, direct file access or your own backup policy. Whichever route you choose, the non-negotiable requirement is the same: the server and every client must match the selected SkyFactory 2.5 build and its Forge-based mod set.
