Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For the current Project Ozone 3: A New Way Forward pack, the reliable setup is a Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server running on Java 8. Download the pack’s 3.4.11F server files, give the JVM at least 6 GB of heap, accept the EULA, then open the server port on your firewall and router. Plan on 6 GB for two or three players and roughly 8–10 GB for five to ten players, while leaving additional physical memory for the operating system.

Which Project Ozone server are you hosting?
This guide is for Project Ozone 3: A New Way Forward, usually abbreviated PO3. It is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2. Project Ozone 2 is a separate pack with different files and instructions; do not combine its server package, configuration or launch advice with PO3.

The pack version matters because the server files, Forge loader and client mod list must match. The current pack listing identifies 3.4.11F as the server-file release. A setup guide also recommends version 3.4.6 or newer because earlier releases had expert-mode bugs. If a newer PO3 release appears later, use the server package that belongs to that release rather than copying an older folder over it.
Hardware, software and network requirements
| Area | Practical requirement | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Game and loader | Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge | PO3 is built for this version; newer Minecraft server versions are not interchangeable. |
| Java | Java 8 (1.8) | Forge 1.12.2 is commonly run with Java 8. Newer Java releases are frequently associated with launch failures in this older Forge environment. |
| Server files | PO3 3.4.11F server files | Download the server package, not the client-only modpack archive. |
| Memory | At least 6 GB of JVM heap | The official pack listing says PO3 needs at least 6 GB and describes 8 GB as the upper end of its guidance. A separate setup guide suggests about 6 GB for two to three players and 8–10 GB for five to ten. |
| Processor and disk | Strong single-core performance and SSD storage are preferable | One setup guide emphasizes roughly 3.5 GHz or higher single-core performance and calls SSD storage essential; treat that as practical guidance rather than a published minimum specification. |
| Internet access | A reachable listening port and stable upload bandwidth | 25565 is the default Minecraft Java port, but the value in server.properties controls the actual port. |
How much RAM should you allocate?
Memory advice for PO3 varies by source, so do not treat a host’s smallest advertised plan as a safe multiplayer target.

| Use case | Heap planning | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Official pack guidance | 6–8 GB | The CurseForge listing states: “PO3 needs at least 6Gb of ram (at most 8Gb) to load any less and the pack might crash.” This is pack-listing guidance, not a promise that every world and player count fits inside 8 GB. |
| Two to three players | About 6 GB | Recommendation from a 2026 PO3 setup guide. |
| Five to ten players | About 8–10 GB | The same guide’s larger-group estimate; the machine must have more physical RAM than the heap so the operating system and Java process do not compete for memory. |
| Plans advertising 4 GB | Use caution | Some hosting listings call 4 GB sufficient, while another lists 4 GB as minimum and 5 GB or more for a public server. Those figures are optimistic compared with the pack’s official 6 GB floor. |
Set the heap below the machine’s total physical RAM. For example, a 6 GB heap should not consume every gigabyte on the host. If the server begins swapping, the disk and operating system will slow the game even when the Java process itself has not reached its heap limit.
Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
| Criterion | Self-hosted machine | Managed modpack host |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full control over Java, files, scripts, backups, mods and version changes. | Control depends on the provider’s panel and supported pack versions. |
| Technical work | You install Java, configure Forge, edit properties, secure the machine and troubleshoot networking. | One-click or assisted installation handles much of the installation and networking. |
| Connectivity | You must configure the firewall, router forwarding and a stable local address. | The provider normally supplies a public address and handles the data-center network. |
| Cost model | Uses an existing computer or a machine you rent separately; electricity and maintenance are yours. | Recurring hosting charge based on memory, storage and support. |
| Uptime | Depends on your power, internet connection and maintenance. | Depends on the provider’s infrastructure and service terms. |
Choose self-hosting when you need file-level control and can administer Java, networking and backups. Choose a managed service when the priority is getting a group online without configuring a router or maintaining the operating system. Whichever route you choose, confirm that the plan supports Project Ozone 3 3.4.11F (or the exact release you intend to run), Java 8 and at least the memory your player count requires.
Self-host Project Ozone 3 step by step
1. Prepare a dedicated server directory and Java 8
Use a separate directory for the PO3 server so that its libraries, configuration and world do not mix with another Minecraft installation. Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime or development kit, then verify what the command line will use:
java -version
The output should identify version 1.8. If the computer also runs a newer Java for other software, point the PO3 start script directly at the Java 8 executable instead of relying on the system-wide PATH. A GameTeam setup guide suggests Java 8u321 or a similar Java 8 build because some later Java 8 updates reportedly caused Forge mod issues; that is a single-source recommendation rather than an official pack requirement. The important compatibility boundary is Java 8, not Java 17 or Java 21.
2. Download the correct server files
From the Project Ozone 3 listing, download the package labeled 3.4.11F Server Files. Extract every file into the new server directory. Do not copy a client installation’s mods, config or launcher files into the server unless they are part of the supplied server package. The client and server need matching pack content, but they are not the same archive.

3. Create a launch script with an appropriate heap
After extraction, identify the Forge server jar supplied by the package. Rename that file to forge-server.jar so the launch script remains stable when you edit memory settings. Do not rename libraries or delete files that the package includes.
For a small two- or three-player group, a 6 GB heap is the starting point:
java -Xms6G -Xmx6G -jar forge-server.jar nogui
For a larger group, adjust both values to the planned heap, for example:
java -Xms8G -Xmx8G -jar forge-server.jar nogui
On Windows, save the command as start.bat. On Linux, save it as start.sh, make it executable with chmod +x start.sh, and run it from the server directory. If Java 8 is not the default executable, replace java with the full path to the Java 8 binary. Keep additional RAM outside -Xmx for the operating system and any monitoring, backup or control-panel processes.

4. Run once, accept the EULA and run again
Start the script once. Forge and the pack will create configuration files, libraries and the initial server structure, then stop or refuse to continue until the EULA is accepted. Open eula.txt, change the value to:
eula=true
Save the file and start the script again. The first successful launch can take considerably longer than later starts while libraries and world data are generated. Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before attempting to connect.
5. Configure the world and server properties
Stop the server cleanly before editing server.properties. Set the values you need, including the server name, difficulty, whitelist policy and port. The default Java port is 25565; if you change server-port, use the new number in every firewall, router and connection instruction.
Garden of Glass is the commonly cited recommended world type for PO3 in one setup guide. That guide says to select it through the level-type and generator-settings entries in server.properties, but it does not establish universal values for those fields. Use the exact values supplied by the PO3 release’s own server instructions or configuration files. Make this choice before creating the permanent world: changing generation settings later does not transform already-generated terrain.

6. Open the firewall and forward the port
Allow the Java server process, or an inbound rule for the chosen server port, through the host’s firewall. For the default configuration, that is TCP port 25565. The number shown in server.properties is authoritative; the absence of a dedicated PO3 port list does not change Minecraft Java’s default.
If players are outside your home or office network, create a router port-forward from the public-facing TCP port to the server computer’s fixed local IP address. A local address that changes after a reboot will break the forwarding rule, so reserve it in the router or configure a static address. Players on the same network can normally connect using the server’s local address; outside players use the public address and forwarded port.
Do not expose administrative services or the remote console to the internet just to make Minecraft reachable. Forward only the game port, keep the operating system patched and use a whitelist while testing.
7. Create operators, a whitelist and backups
Use the server console to grant operator status only to trusted accounts. Enable the whitelist before inviting people to a private world, then add each player deliberately. A whitelist limits who can join; it does not replace strong account security or operating-system updates.
Stop the server before copying the world directory for a consistent backup. Keep more than one backup generation, and store at least one copy outside the live server machine. Test restoring a backup on a separate directory before you rely on it for a valuable progression world.

8. Match every client to the server
Each player should install the same Project Ozone 3 release, Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge build represented by the server files. A client from another PO3 release can fail during the handshake even when the server itself starts normally. Ask players to remove old pack profiles rather than layering files from different versions into one instance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen a connection fails, compare the client’s mod list and configuration with the server package before changing Java or networking. “Mod rejected,” missing-mod and registry-mismatch messages usually indicate version or file differences, not a closed port.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a managed Project Ozone host
Managed Minecraft providers that list Project Ozone 3 generally offer a modpack installer or a preconfigured server type. The provider handles the public network address and panel, while you select a memory plan, choose the pack release and start the instance. This is the easiest route when you cannot configure port forwarding or do not want to maintain Java and the host operating system.
Before paying, check these specific items:
- Pack release: confirm that the panel offers PO3 3.4.11F, or the exact release your players will install.
- Memory allocation: treat 6 GB as the practical floor, not the smallest plan displayed. For five to ten players, look for an 8–10 GB option.
- Java selection: verify that the service can run the 1.12.2 pack on Java 8.
- File access: ensure you can download the world, edit
server.propertiesand upload a backup. - Version control: ask whether an automatic update can change the pack without approval. Pin the version until every client is ready.
- Support and recovery: check backup retention, restore controls, restart policies and how crashes are reported.
One-click installation removes much of the technical work, but it does not remove compatibility decisions. You still need matching client files, an adequate memory plan and a backup strategy.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The server crashes immediately with Forge errors | Wrong Java generation or an incompatible Java 8 update. | Run java -version from the same script, point the script to Java 8 explicitly and test the Java 8 build recommended by your host or setup guide. |
| “Could not reserve enough space” or the process is killed | The heap is larger than available physical memory, or another process is consuming the host’s RAM. | Lower -Xmx only after confirming the machine can still meet PO3’s 6 GB floor; otherwise move to a larger machine or plan. |
| Players receive a mod or registry mismatch | Client and server releases, Forge builds or mod files differ. | Reinstall the exact PO3 release represented by the server files. Do not copy a different pack’s mods into the directory. |
| The server is visible locally but not from the internet | Firewall rule, router forwarding or changing local IP. | Confirm server-port, allow inbound TCP on that port, forward it to the server’s current local IP and test from a different network. |
| The world is not the intended Garden of Glass map | Generation settings were entered incorrectly or changed after the world was created. | Stop the server, verify the release-specific level-type and generator-settings values, and create a new world only after backing up the existing one. |
| Severe lag during exploration or automation | Insufficient heap, weak single-core performance, slow storage or an overloaded world. | Check memory use and console timings, keep the world on an SSD, reduce simultaneous load and increase the heap only when physical RAM allows it. |
Updating without losing the world
Do not replace a working installation casually. Before any pack or Forge update:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Make a dated copy of the world, configuration directory and start script.
- Record the current PO3 release, Java version and heap settings.
- Install the new server files in a separate directory rather than overwriting the live copy.
- Apply only the documented migration steps for that release.
- Start the new copy and inspect the console for missing mods, registry errors or world-conversion warnings.
- Test with an administrator account before allowing the whole group to join.
If the update fails, shut down the test copy and return to the untouched backup. Never “fix” a failed migration by deleting the only copy of the original world.
A practical launch checklist
- Project Ozone 3, not Project Ozone 2, is installed.
- Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge match the PO3 release.
- Java 8 is confirmed and selected by the launch script.
- The 3.4.11F server files are extracted into their own directory.
- The heap starts at 6 GB for a small group, with 8–10 GB planned for a larger group when the machine can support it.
- The EULA is accepted and the server reaches its ready state.
server-port, the firewall rule and router forwarding use the same port.- Clients use the identical pack release and Forge environment.
- Operators, whitelist rules and tested backups are configured.
- Updates are performed in a separate copy before the live world is changed.
Bottom line for a stable PO3 server
Use the 3.4.11F Project Ozone 3 server package, run it with Java 8, and budget at least 6 GB of heap rather than relying on a provider’s 4 GB minimum. Configure the server once, open only the Minecraft port (25565 by default), and require every player to use the same Minecraft, Forge and pack versions. Self-hosting gives you complete control but requires networking and maintenance; managed hosting trades recurring cost for simpler installation and connectivity.
