For the current indexed release, that means Shattered Ring 2.0 for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.3.5. An older release, Shattered Ring 1.0.3, uses Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge 36.2.35. Install the matching server distribution— not an unmodified client folder—then size memory, test one connection and only afterward invite the rest of the group.

Choose the exact Shattered Ring release first
“Shattered Ring server” is not one fixed configuration. The pack has multiple releases with different Minecraft and Forge requirements. Write the chosen release in your server notes and send that exact text to every player before anyone installs the pack.

| Release | Minecraft | Forge | Referenced mods | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shattered Ring 2.0 | 1.20.1 | 47.3.5 | 86 | Current indexed release; the count comes from the pack file and is not a memory requirement. |
| Shattered Ring 1.0.3 | 1.16.5 | 36.2.35 | 52 | Older indexed release; do not mix its files with the 1.20.1 release. |
The referenced-mod totals are useful for identifying a pack export, but they do not predict server RAM. A smaller list can still contain a demanding world-generation or automation mod, while a larger list may be relatively light.
Record a release lock
- Pack name and release number.
- Minecraft version.
- Forge loader version.
- The exact manifest and overrides supplied with that release.
- The date the group agreed to stop updating until a planned migration.
Keep this record beside the server files. When a player reports a connection error, compare this list before changing settings.

Get server-side files without copying the client blindly
The Shattered Ring listings indexed by Modpacks.ch do not name a separate server file. That does not prove that no server distribution exists; it means you must inspect the release notes and download area for the exact release you selected. Use a matching server pack if the creator provides one.
A normal CurseForge client instance can contain client-only mods, launcher metadata, screenshots, logs and configuration that are inappropriate for a dedicated server. Uploading the entire folder can therefore create loading errors or a client/server handshake mismatch.

What belongs in the server directory
- The Forge server installation for the locked Minecraft and Forge versions.
- The server-appropriate mods supplied by the matching Shattered Ring release.
- The release’s configuration, scripts, manifest data and overrides when the server distribution calls for them.
- A newly generated world and server properties created after the first successful startup.
What to leave out unless the server distribution explicitly requires it
- Client-only performance, graphics or menu mods.
- Launcher cache and instance metadata.
- Unrelated resource packs and shader packs.
- Another Shattered Ring release’s configuration or mods.
If the release notes do not provide server instructions, ask the pack creator or use the hosting platform’s server-pack support rather than guessing. The pack listing’s absence of a named server file is a reason to verify, not a reason to rename the client folder and hope it works.
Decide between self-hosting and managed hosting
| Consideration | Self-hosted machine | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full control over files, Java settings, mods and backups. | Control depends on the provider’s panel and file access. |
| Maintenance | You install Forge, apply updates, read logs and repair failures. | The provider may automate Forge and modpack installation. |
| Network | You handle firewall rules, port forwarding and a reachable address. | The provider supplies a public endpoint and manages the underlying network. |
| Backups | You create and test your own backup routine. | Backup frequency, retention and restore controls vary; verify them before paying. |
| Location | Latency depends on your home or office connection. | You can usually select a region, but availability and latency differ by provider. |
| Pack support | You can inspect and alter every file, but must solve compatibility issues yourself. | Choose only a service that lists the exact Shattered Ring release and Forge version. |
Managed hosts advertise one-click or automatic Forge/modpack installation. ServerPrism, for example, says it installs the matching Forge version automatically, while DedicatedMinecraft.host publishes Shattered Ring resource recommendations. These statements describe advertised capabilities, not an independent performance test. Confirm the current release, region, pricing, backup policy, DDoS policy and server-pack support before ordering.
Self-host a Shattered Ring server step by step
1. Prepare an empty server directory
Create a directory dedicated to the selected release. Do not place it inside an existing vanilla world or another modpack’s directory. Use a separate directory for each release so a rollback does not overwrite the working server.

2. Install the matching Forge server
Download the Forge installer corresponding to the locked Minecraft and Forge versions. Run the installer’s server option in the empty directory. Forge distributions commonly use an installer command such as java -jar forge-47.3.5-installer.jar --installServer, but the exact filename and command must come from the selected Forge distribution. For Shattered Ring 1.0.3, substitute the 1.16.5/36.2.35 server package rather than reusing a 1.20.1 installation.
After installation, check that the generated launcher files refer to the intended Minecraft and Forge versions. If the directory contains references to another release, stop and rebuild it before adding mods.
3. Add only the matching server pack
Copy the server-ready mods and overrides from the exact Shattered Ring release into the Forge server directory. Preserve the supplied manifest relationships and configuration paths. Do not add optional client mods simply because they appear in your personal launcher instance.
4. Accept the EULA
Start the server once. Forge or the Minecraft server will create an EULA file and stop if acceptance is required. Read the EULA, change the value only if you agree to its terms, then start the server again.
5. Let the first run generate files
The first successful run creates configuration files, libraries and a world directory. Stop the server cleanly after generation, review the files, and make your normal settings changes before inviting anyone. Keep the generated configuration with the release backup.

6. Watch the logs before opening access
- Confirm that Forge reaches a ready state.
- Look for repeated mod-loading failures, missing dependencies or version warnings.
- Check that the world saves without errors when the server stops.
- Do not treat a window that remains open as proof that the server is healthy; the log must show a completed startup.
7. Configure memory conservatively
Set Java’s minimum and maximum heap in the startup script used by your Forge distribution. Leave enough memory for the operating system and Java itself. Increase the maximum only when monitoring shows pressure; assigning every gigabyte to Java can make the machine less stable.
8. Make the network reachable
Allow the Java process through the host firewall. If the server is at home, forward the Minecraft listening port from the router to the server machine and give friends the public address (or a DNS name that you control). Players on the same local network can normally use the machine’s private address. Never publish administrative credentials, and enable a whitelist when the server should be private.
9. Test with one player
Start the server, wait for its ready message, and connect from a second Minecraft instance. Test walking, block placement, a dimension change if the pack uses one, and a clean disconnect. Fix errors while only one player is online; troubleshooting becomes harder after several players have created files and explored different areas.
Use a managed host when you want less maintenance
A managed service can be appropriate when nobody in the group wants to maintain Java, firewall rules, backups and Forge updates. The safe workflow is still release-first: search the host’s modpack installer for Shattered Ring 2.0 or 1.0.3, then verify the displayed Minecraft and Forge versions before creating the server.

- Confirm the host supports the corresponding Forge loader.
- Choose a region close to most players.
- Set the plan’s memory and CPU resources.
- Use the provider’s one-click installer or upload the supported server pack.
- Wait for the first startup and inspect the console for mod-loading errors.
- Set the server name, whitelist and operator permissions.
- Test a connection, then schedule or enable backups.
CurseForge’s hosted-server workflow is based on a modpack with a matching server pack. Its support guidance describes selecting a modpack, plan, region and server details before provisioning. If the Shattered Ring release you want lacks a supported server pack, the hosted workflow may not be available for that release; do not substitute the ordinary client export without confirmation.

How much RAM does Shattered Ring need?
The clearest published starting guidance is DedicatedMinecraft.host’s current recommendation:
| Concurrent players | Published starting RAM | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | 6–8 GB | Starting band, not a guarantee; world generation and extra mods can raise usage. |
| 5–15 | 10–12 GB | Allow headroom for exploration and simultaneous chunk loading. |
| 15+ | 12–16 GB | Use monitoring and CPU capacity as well as heap size when scaling. |
These are provider-published bands, not a laboratory benchmark. Actual requirements vary with view and simulation distances, how much terrain players generate, entity farms, dimensions, backups and any additions you make. The 52-mod and 86-mod counts listed for the two releases are not substitutes for monitoring.
Signs that resources are insufficient
- Repeated “can’t keep up” or long tick-time messages in the console.
- Large pauses when several players explore new terrain.
- Java heap warnings or garbage-collection pauses.
- The operating system swapping because the Java heap consumed nearly all available RAM.
Reduce view or simulation distance and remove unnecessary additions before immediately allocating more memory. If CPU time remains saturated, more RAM alone will not fix tick delay.
Make every client match the server
Each player should install the same launcher instance or export for the same Shattered Ring release. The following values must match:
- Shattered Ring release number.
- Minecraft version.
- Forge loader version.
- Mods and their versions.
- Manifest, configuration and overrides that the pack requires.
Do not casually add or remove a mod to “see whether it helps.” A client-only/server-only difference can fail the Forge handshake, and a changed configuration can produce a different registry or gameplay state. If one player cannot join, compare their installed file list and loader version with a known-good client before changing the server.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Common connection failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Incompatible mod list or failed handshake | Different release, loader or mod set. | Compare the player’s instance with the server’s locked release record. |
| Missing mod or dependency error | Incomplete server pack or a client-only export copied to the server. | Re-check the release notes and rebuild from the supported server distribution. |
| Connection refused or timeout | Server is stopped, firewall blocks it, or router forwarding is wrong. | Connect locally first, then verify the public network path. |
| Server starts but crashes while loading a world | Wrong configuration, incompatible addition or corrupted generated files. | Review the first error in the log and restore the last known-good configuration. |
Backups, updates and rollback
Before changing Forge, the pack release or a major configuration file, stop the server and create a complete backup of the world, server configuration and the exact pack record. Keep at least one copy outside the live server directory.
- Announce a maintenance window.
- Stop the server cleanly so region files flush to disk.
- Archive the world, configuration, scripts and release notes.
- Install the new release in a separate directory when possible.
- Test with a copy of the world before migrating the live instance.
- Keep the old directory until every player has confirmed the new setup works.
Do not load a world in a newer release and then expect it to open safely in the older one. A separate directory and a tested backup are the simplest rollback plan.
Invite friends safely
Once one test player has joined successfully, send friends the server address and the exact client installation instructions. State whether they should use a public address, a private LAN address or a host-provided hostname. Tell them to install the locked pack before connecting; joining first and repairing the instance later often creates confusing error logs.
- Enable a whitelist for a private group.
- Give operator privileges only to people who need them.
- Do not share the server console, panel password or file-transfer credentials.
- Tell players when the server will be offline for backups or updates.
A practical pre-launch checklist
- Release is explicitly recorded as Shattered Ring 2.0/1.20.1/Forge 47.3.5 or 1.0.3/1.16.5/Forge 36.2.35.
- Server files came from the matching server distribution or a confirmed hosted-server package.
- No ordinary client folder was uploaded wholesale.
- Forge reaches a ready state without repeating load errors.
- RAM is selected from the player-count guidance and adjusted for the actual world.
- Firewall and router or host networking have been tested.
- One player completed a join and basic gameplay test.
- Backups include the world and the exact pack/configuration record.
- Every player has the same release, Minecraft version, Forge loader and overrides.
Bottom line for choosing your setup
Self-hosting gives the most control and the lowest dependence on a provider, but you own installation, networking, monitoring and backups. A managed host removes much of that maintenance and may install Forge automatically, yet it is useful only when it supports the exact Shattered Ring release and a matching server pack. Whichever route you choose, release matching is more important than the number of listed mods, and a one-player test is more valuable than inviting the whole group to an unverified server.
