How to Host a Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons Server (RAD 1.56)

A version-specific guide to hosting the original RAD 1.56 Minecraft 1.12.2 server, from downloading the official server pack and accepting the EULA to configuring Forge, RAM, networking, backups and managed hosting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To host the original Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons (RAD), download the official RAD-Serverpack-1.56 for Minecraft 1.12.2, install a compatible 64-bit Java runtime and Forge, accept the EULA, set server.properties, and start the included Windows or Linux launch script. Allocate 4 GB of RAM as the project’s official starting recommendation, then tune the server after observing real usage.

The reliable setup is version-specific: every player must use the same RAD generation and release as the server. RAD2 is a separate 1.16.5 line with different files and Java guidance, so never mix its server pack or client profile with original RAD.

What you are hosting

Original RAD is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2. Its content is built around exploration, dungeons, structures, quests, leveling and loot, with dimensions such as Twilight Forest, Aether, The Betweenlands, Tropicraft, Cavern and The Beneath. The current CurseForge project listing identifies R.A.D. – 1.56 as the latest release and RAD-Serverpack-1.56 as its matching server archive. Check the project listing again when you download it, because filenames and releases can change.

A server pack is preferable to collecting individual mods. It contains the server-side files and configuration intended for that release; mixing files from mirrors or from another RAD generation is a common cause of registry and missing-mod errors.

Choose a hosting method first

Self-hosting from a computer you control

Self-hosting keeps the files, JVM flags, world saves and backups under your control. It can be inexpensive if you already have a machine that can remain powered on, but you are responsible for Java and Forge troubleshooting, firewall rules, router port forwarding, backups, updates and outages. A home connection also needs sufficient upload bandwidth and a stable public route for the players who connect.

Managed Minecraft hosting

A managed service normally supplies a control panel, persistent data-center uptime, automated backup options and support for installing a modpack server pack. You give up some low-level control and pay a recurring fee. CurseForge documents a hosted-server workflow for modpacks that have matching server packs: select the modpack, choose a plan and region, enter server details and complete payment. That documentation says the service is powered by Shockbyte; current plans, regions, memory allocations and prices must be checked at the time you order.

Decision table

Question Self-hosting Managed hosting
File and JVM control Full access to scripts, Forge files, configuration and JVM arguments. Depends on the panel and plan; verify whether custom Java arguments and file access are available.
Uptime Limited by your computer, power and home connection. Usually designed for an always-on data-center machine; confirm the provider’s service terms.
Network setup You must configure the host firewall and, normally, router forwarding. The provider exposes the assigned server address; you generally do not forward a home port.
Backups You create and test them yourself. Many plans offer scheduled backups, but retention and restore limits vary.
Performance information You can measure your own CPU, memory, disk and network behavior. Ask whether RAM is guaranteed or burstable and what CPU and storage limits apply.
Cost Potentially limited to electricity and your existing hardware. Recurring monthly price; the amount is not established here and changes by plan, region and resources.

Requirements for an original RAD server

  • A 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit Java runtime compatible with the exact server-pack release.
  • The Forge server files intended for Minecraft 1.12.2 and the RAD server pack from the official CurseForge project.
  • A dedicated directory with enough free disk space for the archive, Forge libraries, logs, configuration and an expanding world.
  • A machine that can stay online for the intended play sessions and a network path reachable by your players.
  • A backup location separate from the live world directory.

The original RAD listing recommends 4 GB of allocated RAM. Treat that as a starting point rather than a promise of a fixed tick rate: exploration-heavy play generates new chunks and can load several dimensions at once.

Download the matching server pack

  1. Open the official RAD project on CurseForge and select the release you intend to run. For the current listing, that is R.A.D. – 1.56.
  2. Download the file named RAD-Serverpack-1.56, or the exact server-pack filename shown for the release you selected.
  3. Do not substitute a RAD2 or RAD3 archive, a client-only profile, or an archive assembled from individual mod downloads.
  4. Record the release number in your setup notes. Players will need that exact generation and release when they install their clients.

Install and start the server manually

1. Install compatible Java and Forge

Install a 64-bit Java runtime supported by the selected pack, then install or use the Forge server files that belong to Minecraft 1.12.2. The original RAD listing does not establish one universal Java major version in the way RAD2 documentation does, so follow the requirements bundled with the exact RAD release and verify which executable the launch script calls. On a multi-Java machine, use an explicit path in the script rather than assuming the system default is correct.

2. Create a dedicated server directory

Make a new folder used only for this server. Avoid running a modded server from your Downloads folder or from a client installation. A dedicated location makes permissions, backups and later migration easier.

Mattel Games UNO Minecraft Card Game with Storage Tin,Ages 7+ | Video Game Themed Deck with Special Rule for Kids, Teens, Parties & Family Game Night, 2-10 Players (Amazon Exclusive)
  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

3. Extract the archive

Unzip the complete server-pack archive into that directory. Preserve its folder structure, launch scripts, Forge libraries, configuration files and mods. If your extraction tool creates an extra nested folder, move the actual server files so the launch script and eula.txt will be in the directory you intend to run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Accept the Minecraft EULA

Run the included launcher once, or inspect the extracted files for eula.txt. Open that file and change eula=false to eula=true only after reading and agreeing to the Minecraft EULA. Do not delete the file or use a value other than the one required by the server.

5. Configure server.properties

Open server.properties in a plain-text editor while the server is stopped. At minimum, review the world name, difficulty, whitelist setting and view distance. Leave an option at its release default when you do not understand its effect; modpacks can rely on particular settings.

6. Set memory in the supplied script

Open the Windows or Linux launch script included with the pack and locate its JVM memory arguments. Set the maximum heap to the project’s 4 GB recommendation, using the script’s existing syntax. Do not allocate all physical RAM to Java: the operating system, Forge process, file cache and remote administration still need headroom. If you later change the value, make one change at a time and observe logs, garbage-collection pauses and operating-system memory pressure.

7. Start Forge

Run the supplied Windows batch file on Windows or the supplied shell script on Linux. The first start can take time while Forge creates libraries, configuration files and the world. Keep the terminal open and wait for the normal server-ready message before connecting. Script names can differ by release; use the files shipped in your archive rather than copying a command from a different RAD generation.

8. Stop safely and make the first backup

Use the server console’s stop command instead of closing the window or killing the process. Once the world has saved, copy the world directory and configuration to a separate backup location. A backup made while files are still being written may be incomplete.

RAD, RAD2 and RAD3 are not interchangeable

Original RAD targets Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge. RAD2 is a separate successor line; its installation documentation describes Minecraft 1.16.5 with 64-bit Java 8, and a managed-host guide specifies Forge 36.2.39 for that RAD2 configuration. Those details do not convert an original RAD server into a RAD2 server. Keep the server archive, Forge build, Java runtime and client profile within one generation.

Generation Minecraft version documented Java/Forge note Compatibility rule
Original RAD 1.12.2 Use the 64-bit Java and Forge combination required by the selected RAD release. Use the matching original-RAD server pack and client profile.
RAD2 1.16.5 Documentation specifies 64-bit Java 8; one managed configuration documents Forge 36.2.39. Use RAD2 files only with RAD2 clients.
RAD3 Not established by the original RAD setup instructions. Do not infer Java, Forge or script requirements from RAD or RAD2. Follow the exact RAD3 release documentation if you choose that line.

Configure access and protect the server

Local firewall

Allow the Java server process, or the configured Minecraft server port, through the host operating system’s firewall. Permit only the traffic required for players. Do not expose RCON, remote-desktop services or file-management panels to the public internet without a separate security plan.

Home-router forwarding

If the server is behind a home router, forward the configured Minecraft port—commonly 25565—to the host machine’s local IP address. The exact menu names and steps differ by router vendor, and no single procedure works for every model. Reserve the host’s local address if your router supports DHCP reservations so a reboot does not send the forwarding rule to another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whitelist and operator access

Enable the whitelist in server.properties for a private group and add players through the console commands supplied by Minecraft. Give operator privileges only to people who need them. Share the public address privately, and never post administrative credentials in chat, screenshots or support requests.

Make 4 GB work well

Watch the right signals

Heap size alone does not explain lag. Watch Java memory use, garbage-collection pauses, CPU load, disk activity and the server log while several players explore. A server can have free heap and still miss ticks because chunk generation or storage is slow.

Reduce avoidable chunk pressure

  • Keep view distance as low as your group can accept, then raise it only if the machine remains responsive.
  • Pre-generate a reasonable safe area during an off-peak period if your tooling and disk capacity support it. This moves expensive chunk creation away from live exploration.
  • Ask players to avoid opening many new dimensions simultaneously during the first minutes after startup.
  • Keep the world on a local SSD when possible and leave room for growth; do not place active world files inside a synchronised cloud folder that can lock or partially copy them.

Do not treat a larger heap as an automatic fix. Increasing Java memory beyond what the machine can support can produce swapping and longer pauses.

Give players a matching client

Every player must install the same modpack generation and release as the server, including the same loader and configuration. The least error-prone method is to distribute the exact CurseForge profile/version used for the server rather than asking players to add mods individually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Symptoms of a mismatch

  • Missing-mod or registry-sync errors: compare the client’s RAD release, Minecraft version, Forge build and mod list with the server.
  • Connection rejected immediately: verify that the client is using the Forge profile rather than vanilla Minecraft and that the server address and port are correct.
  • Crash during loading: remove old RAD profiles, select the intended Java runtime and test a clean installation of the exact release.
  • Different recipes, quests or world behavior: compare configuration files; do not copy a random configuration from another generation.

Recheck both sides before replacing files. Changing several mods at once makes it difficult to identify the mismatch and can damage an established world.

Backups, updates and migration

Use a schedule

Back up the world and the server’s configuration on a schedule that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose. Keep at least one copy offline or on another machine. Periodically restore a copy to a test directory; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Update deliberately

  1. Stop the server cleanly and make a fresh backup.
  2. Read the release notes for the target RAD version and confirm that its server pack exists.
  3. Prepare a separate test directory instead of overwriting the live installation.
  4. Start the new files against a copy of the world and inspect Forge logs, quests and dimensions.
  5. Tell players exactly which client release to install before switching the public server.
  6. Keep the previous server directory until the new world has been played successfully and another backup exists.

Moving from a home computer to a host

Stop the old server, back up the world and configuration, then export the complete server data required by the destination. Confirm that the destination uses the same RAD release, Minecraft version, Forge build, Java compatibility and memory allocation. Uploading only the world while omitting mod configuration can change gameplay or prevent startup. Test the migrated copy privately before changing the address given to players.

Troubleshooting by failure point

The script closes immediately

Run it from a terminal so the error remains visible. Check that 64-bit Java is installed, that the script points to the intended executable and that its working directory contains the Forge files. Correct a path or permission problem before changing mods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forge reports a missing library

Confirm that the archive was fully extracted and that the first run completed with internet access to obtain required libraries. Re-extract into a clean directory if files were moved or selectively copied. Do not download a replacement library from an unverified mirror.

Players time out

Test a local connection from the host network first, then test from outside that network. Check the operating-system firewall, router forwarding, the server’s listening port and whether the home connection uses carrier-grade NAT. If inbound connections cannot be routed, a managed service or a network tunnel designed for Minecraft may be necessary.

The world lags when exploring

Check CPU and disk activity during the lag, reduce view distance, pre-generate an area and avoid running backups while players are generating large new regions. If the machine is swapping, lower background workloads or move the server to hardware with more usable memory; simply raising the Java maximum can make pauses worse.

A mod update breaks the world

Stop immediately, preserve the current backup and return to the previous complete server directory. Never test an unverified mod replacement on the only copy of an established world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare hosts before paying

If you rent instead of self-hosting, ask each provider the same questions. A low advertised memory number is not comparable to a guaranteed allocation, and a panel that installs a pack automatically may not give you the file access needed for custom troubleshooting.

Specification to verify Why it matters for RAD
Supported RAD release and server-pack installation The host must support the exact original RAD release, not merely generic Forge.
Java and Forge control You need the correct runtime and loader for Minecraft 1.12.2 and a way to inspect startup errors.
Guaranteed versus burst RAM Chunk generation can create short-lived peaks; know what memory is actually reserved for your process.
CPU and storage limits Tick time and world generation depend on more than the advertised RAM.
Backups and restore policy Check schedule, retention, storage location and whether you can download a backup.
Region and latency Choose a data-center region near most players and ask how location changes are handled.
Player-slot limits Some plans cap slots even when the hardware could support more connections.
Logs and file access Console and file access are essential for diagnosing Forge and mod errors.
Migration and export Ensure you can download the world and configuration if you leave.
Total monthly price Include storage, backups, extra slots, taxes and renewal pricing; no universal price is established here.

No independent benchmark establishes one host as the fastest for RAD. Compare measured specifications and support terms, and test the provider’s export and restore process before committing a long-lived world.

Final launch checklist

  • Selected the intended original RAD release and downloaded its official server pack.
  • Installed 64-bit Java and the matching Forge server files.
  • Extracted the complete archive into a dedicated directory.
  • Accepted the EULA by changing only the required value in eula.txt.
  • Reviewed the world, difficulty, whitelist and view-distance settings in server.properties.
  • Set the launch script to the 4 GB starting allocation and left system headroom.
  • Started the included Windows or Linux script and waited for the server-ready message.
  • Opened the firewall and, when needed, forwarded the Minecraft port to the host.
  • Distributed the exact RAD generation and release to every player.
  • Created and tested a backup before inviting players.
