Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo host a Quake Live server in 2026, run the Linux dedicated-server files, configure a game port and server type, launch the included script, then allow and forward that port so other players can connect. The clearest documented route uses SteamCMD and app ID 349090. The detailed installation procedure comes from community documentation rather than a current official Bethesda server manual, so inspect the files you install and verify command names, paths and defaults on your build.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Quake Live servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What you are actually hosting
Quake Live is the multiplayer arena shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. Its Steam product listing describes more than 100 arenas, more than 12 game modes and Steam Workshop support. A dedicated server is a separate process that accepts game traffic, applies your configuration and advertises itself to the master-server system when configured to do so.

Public access requires a usable route from the player to the host: the process must listen on the intended port, the host firewall must allow it, and a home router or other network edge must pass the traffic to the correct machine.
Choose where the server will run
You can run the process on a Linux computer at home or on a rented Linux VPS. The sources support both as broad options, but they do not establish a current hardware minimum, player-capacity benchmark, provider price, or latency ranking. Treat the choice as a networking and maintenance decision rather than a guaranteed performance comparison.

| Consideration | Home Linux host | Linux VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Uses a machine and connection you already manage. | Provides a rented, usually always-on environment under your account. |
| Inbound reachability | Requires router port forwarding, host-firewall rules and a connection that accepts inbound traffic. | Usually avoids home-router forwarding, but you must configure the VPS firewall and provider networking. |
| Recurring cost | No separate server rental is established by the sources; electricity and an existing connection still apply. | Requires a recurring rental decision; the sources do not establish a current price. |
| Maintenance | You maintain the computer, operating system, connection and uptime. | You maintain Linux and the game files while the provider maintains the underlying platform. |
| Geographic latency | Depends on your home connection and where players are located. | Depends on the selected data-center location and its network paths; no quantified comparison is established. |
For a private group and an available Linux machine, home hosting can be practical. For an always-on community server, a VPS removes the need to leave a home computer running, but it adds provider selection and Linux administration.
Prerequisites and network details
- A Linux machine or VPS with permission to install and run server software.
- SteamCMD, installed according to the current package or archive instructions for your distribution.
- Enough storage for the dedicated-server files and your configuration and logs. The reviewed sources do not publish a current numeric minimum.
- A fixed or reliably discoverable local address for a home host, so the router forwarding rule does not point to a different machine later.
- Access to the host firewall and, for home hosting, the router’s port-forwarding page.
The community procedure discussed below uses UDP for ordinary game traffic. It describes TCP for ZeroMQ remote-console and statistics features, not for basic game listing. Do not expose administration ports unless you have deliberately enabled those features and secured their credentials.

How to install the Quake Live dedicated server with SteamCMD
The commonly cited Linux procedure logs in anonymously to SteamCMD and installs or updates app ID 349090. Because that recipe is community-maintained and may age as SteamCMD changes, confirm that the app is still available and that the command syntax matches the SteamCMD version on your machine.
- Install SteamCMD. Use your distribution’s current instructions, then change to the directory containing
steamcmd.sh. - Choose an installation directory. Use a dedicated path that your server account can read and write. Avoid placing configuration in a temporary directory.
- Run the anonymous update/install command. A typical community-guide form is:
./steamcmd.sh +login anonymous +force_install_dir /path/to/quakelive-server +app_update 349090 validate +quit
Replace the path with your real directory and verify the syntax against the SteamCMD build you installed. - Inspect the result before launching. Confirm that the directory contains the Quake Live server executable, the supplied launch scripts and configuration examples. Do not assume an older guide’s directory layout or default files are unchanged.
- Repeat the app-update step for maintenance. Stop the running server first, update the files, review configuration changes and then start it again. The available sources do not establish a guaranteed update cadence or security-support policy.
If anonymous installation fails, record the exact SteamCMD error, verify the app ID and check whether SteamCMD has changed its handling of anonymous downloads. Do not substitute a random app ID from another Quake product.
Launch the included server script
The Linux guide identifies two launch scripts: run_server_x86.sh and run_server_x64.sh. Select the script matching the files and architecture in your installation. The names are examples from that guide, so list the installed directory and use the script actually shipped with your current files.

- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- Change into the dedicated-server directory.
- Open the selected script and read its working-directory, configuration and port arguments before changing anything.
- Run the script from that directory, or use the exact path expected by the script.
- Watch the console output for the process to finish loading and begin listening. A process that exits immediately usually indicates a path, permission, missing-library or configuration error.
- Keep the first launch in the foreground while you test. Add a service manager or other process supervision only after a manual launch works.
For a 64-bit installation, the community example uses run_server_x64.sh; for a 32-bit installation it uses run_server_x86.sh. Do not infer architecture from the host operating system alone—use the files present in the server directory.
Configure hostname, server type and port
Create or edit the server.cfg used by the launch script. Keep a backup of the working file before making changes, and confirm the script is loading that file rather than a similarly named configuration elsewhere.
Set a recognizable hostname
Give the server a name that tells players what it is for, such as a private group or a public ruleset. Use the hostname cvar and quoting format shown in the configuration example shipped with your installation. If the name does not appear after a restart, inspect the launch script and console output to find which configuration file was loaded.
Select LAN or internet mode
The community guide documents sv_serverType 1 for LAN and sv_serverType 2 for internet use. These values are guide-specific documentation; verify them against the current files before relying on them. A LAN setting can prevent the server from behaving like a public internet server even when the process is healthy.
Control master-server advertising
The same guide advises checking sv_master when a server is not appearing publicly. Make sure the setting and any master-server address are present in the configuration expected by your build, and confirm that outbound connections are permitted. A local firewall rule that only allows inbound game traffic can still block registration or browser updates.

Choose the game port
The guide’s multi-instance example uses 27960 as the base game port. Treat that as an example, not a universal default. Record the actual port used by your launch command and configuration; the router rule, host-firewall rule and player connection details must all use the same value.
How do I port forward a Quake Live server?
For a home-hosted server, forward the configured UDP game port from the router to the Linux host’s local IP address. The exact menu labels differ by router, but the required values are consistent.
- Find the Linux host’s local IPv4 address and reserve it in the router’s DHCP settings if that feature is available.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding or virtual-server page.
- Create a rule whose destination is the host’s local address, whose protocol is UDP, and whose external and internal port match the Quake Live game port configured on the server.
- Save and apply the rule, then confirm that the host still has the same local address.
- Allow the same UDP port in the Linux firewall. Do not open a broad port range when one game port is sufficient.
- Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a friend’s network or a mobile connection. A connection from another device inside the same home network does not prove that internet forwarding works.
The community guide associates TCP with ZeroMQ remote-console and statistics functions. Basic game joining and listing do not require you to expose those administration features. If you enable them, assign their ports deliberately, restrict access and use separate credentials for each instance.
When forwarding cannot work
Some home connections place the router behind another NAT device or an ISP-managed arrangement that does not provide a directly reachable public address. In that situation, a correct local forwarding rule may still be unreachable from the internet. The reviewed sources do not quantify provider-specific restrictions, so check your network topology and ask the ISP whether inbound connections are possible before redesigning the server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Process test: confirm the server remains running and reports that it is listening on the intended port.
- Host test: connect from the same machine or local network using the client’s direct-connect control and the host address and port.
- Firewall test: temporarily review firewall logs or rules to verify that packets to the configured UDP port are allowed.
- External test: have a player outside your LAN connect using the public address and port.
- Browser test: only after direct connection works, check whether the server appears in the relevant browser. Browser visibility depends on server type, master-server settings and outbound connectivity.
Do not interpret a successful local connection as proof of public reachability. Likewise, a missing browser entry does not necessarily mean the process is offline; direct connection is the more useful first check.
Quake Live server not showing in browser: troubleshooting
Direct connection fails
- Verify that the process is running and listening on the port recorded in your configuration.
- Check the Linux firewall for an allow rule on that UDP port.
- Check that the router forwards the same port to the current local IP address.
- Look for two routers or other NAT layers between the host and the internet.
- Test from outside the home network; an internal test can succeed even when the public path is closed.
Direct connection works, but the browser is empty
- Confirm that the server type is set for internet use rather than LAN according to the values supported by your installed build.
- Check the
sv_mastersetting and outbound connectivity described in the community guide. - Restart after configuration changes and watch the console for registration or networking errors.
- Try another server-browser view or direct connect before concluding that the server is offline.
The LAN server does not appear
The community guide reports a special LAN-browser behavior restricted to ports 27015–27020. Treat that as an older, guide-specific quirk rather than a universal rule. Validate it with the current client and server combination before changing a working port solely to satisfy an old example.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The server disappears after a reboot
Check that the host’s local address did not change, that the launch script still points to the intended configuration, and that the firewall rule is persistent. If you add process supervision, configure it to use the same working directory and configuration path as your successful manual launch.

Multiple instances can share a machine when each has an unambiguous configuration and a unique game port. The guide demonstrates separate ports for separate instances, with 27960 as a base example. Do not copy sample arithmetic blindly: compare every selected port with existing services before starting the processes.
- Give each instance its own configuration path and, where practical, its own log location.
- Assign a distinct game port to every instance and mirror that value in the firewall and any router forwarding rule.
- Use separate remote-control ports and credentials if administration features are enabled.
- Start one instance at a time and confirm direct connectivity before adding the next.
- Use process supervision to restart failed processes only after you understand why a process stopped; automatic restarts should not hide a bad configuration.
Docker as an alternative deployment
A community project named quakelive-server-standards provides a Docker-based framework for people who already operate containers. It can standardize configuration and deployment, but it is not official Quake Live support and adds another layer to troubleshoot.

Choose the container route only if you are comfortable mapping UDP ports, persisting configuration outside the container, reviewing image and framework updates, and collecting logs. The same networking rules still apply: the host firewall, container port mapping and router forwarding must agree. A container does not remove the need to select a server type, configure the master setting or test from outside the LAN.

Security and maintenance checklist
- Run the server under a dedicated, least-privileged Linux account rather than an administrative account.
- Expose only the UDP game port required for players. Keep remote-console and statistics ports closed unless enabled and secured.
- Use distinct credentials and ports for separate instances; never reuse an administration password across services.
- Back up
server.cfgand any custom rules before updating the server files. - Update the dedicated-server files deliberately, then recheck launch scripts and configuration names because community instructions may not match a later file layout.
- Review logs after every change and keep a written record of the game port, local address, public address method and configuration path.
- If the server is public, monitor whether it remains reachable after router, ISP or operating-system changes.
No source establishes a current security guarantee or supported update schedule for the community procedure. Treat updates, credentials and exposed ports as your responsibility.
Home host or VPS: a practical decision
Choose a home host when
- You already have a Linux computer that can remain powered on.
- You can administer the router and host firewall.
- Your internet connection permits inbound traffic and your expected players are reasonably close to your location.
- You prefer to avoid a separate rental commitment and accept responsibility for uptime.
Choose a VPS when
- You need an always-on environment without depending on a home computer.
- You want to avoid home-router port forwarding.
- You are comfortable selecting a location, configuring Linux and paying a recurring hosting bill.
- Your players are geographically distributed and a data-center location may provide a better route for them, subject to the provider’s actual network performance.
Neither choice guarantees a particular player count or latency. Those outcomes depend on the host, network path, configuration and number of active servers, and the available sources do not provide current benchmark figures.
Operational runbook for your first public session
- Pick home Linux or a VPS and document the host’s local and public network addresses.
- Install SteamCMD and use the community-documented anonymous app update for app ID
349090, verifying that the current SteamCMD build accepts it. - Inspect the installed directory and select the shipped x86 or x64 launch script.
- Create a backup of
server.cfg, set the hostname, choose the correct LAN or internet server type, reviewsv_masterand select a free game port. - Launch in the foreground and confirm that the process stays up and listens.
- Allow the UDP game port through the host firewall. On a home network, forward that same port to the host’s local address.
- Test locally, then from an external connection using direct connect.
- Only after direct connection succeeds, troubleshoot browser registration and public listing.
- Add supervision, multiple instances or Docker deployment only after the single-server path is reliable.
This sequence isolates the most common failure boundaries: installation, configuration, process startup, local networking, internet reachability and browser registration.
