Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can host a Project Zomboid dedicated server behind CGNAT or a locked-down router without creating a port-forwarding rule. Install the dedicated server on a computer you control, then connect that computer and every player device to the same private overlay network with Tailscale or ZeroTier. Friends join the server through its overlay IP and configured game port using Project Zomboid’s direct-connect screen. The router forwards nothing; the overlay supplies the network path.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Project Zomboid servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
This approach is best for a private group whose members can install and authorize an overlay client. It does not make the server publicly listed, and it is not a substitute for a public, always-on host. For public discovery, players who cannot install client software, or reliable 24/7 availability, use a VPS or managed game-server provider instead.

A Project Zomboid dedicated server is still ordinary server software. You install it, configure the world, start it, and allow the game process through the host firewall just as you would on a normally reachable network. The difference is the route that players use to reach it.
With traditional hosting, players connect to your home public address and your router forwards an incoming game port to the server computer. CGNAT, carrier restrictions, double NAT, or an ISP policy can make that impossible. An overlay network instead creates a private virtual network between approved devices. The game traffic travels through that overlay, so the home router does not need an inbound forwarding rule.

Every participant must be an authorized member of the same overlay. The server will not automatically appear in the public server browser, and an overlay address is not a public invitation. Treat the overlay membership list as your access-control boundary.
Choose the right hosting method
| Option | What you install | Router forwarding | Main trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tailscale | Client on the server and every player device | Usually none | Every player needs the client; relay paths can add latency | Small private groups and players behind CGNAT |
| ZeroTier | Client plus a private virtual network, with members authorized | Usually none | Network administration is more explicit; TCP relay is slower than direct traffic | Groups that prefer a virtual-LAN model |
| VPS or managed host | Server software on provider infrastructure | None on your home router | Monthly cost and provider administration | Public discovery, 24/7 uptime, or players who cannot install VPN software |
Tailscale is the simplest first choice for a small private group. Its connectivity system attempts a direct peer path and can fall back to a peer relay or DERP relay when direct connectivity is unavailable. ZeroTier offers a similar private-network model and documents a TCP fallback relay for networks that block UDP or NAT traversal. In either product, a relay keeps the connection working but adds an intermediary hop and can increase latency.

Server computer
- A Windows or Linux computer that can remain online while people play.
- A stable local installation of the Project Zomboid dedicated server.
- Permission to install the overlay client and authorize it with the chosen account.
- Enough storage for the game files, world saves, logs, and any mods you use.
The server may be a desktop, a spare machine, or a headless Linux host. A dedicated server does not require the game’s graphical client to be open, but it does require the server process to stay running.
Player devices
Each friend needs the same overlay client on the device running Project Zomboid. Joining the virtual network from a phone or a different computer does not help if the game is running elsewhere. Everyone must also use a compatible game build and matching server-side and client-side mods.

Network expectations
Overlay networking removes the need for an inbound router rule; it does not guarantee a direct path. Tailscale can report a direct, peer-relay, or DERP-relay connection. ZeroTier can use direct peer-to-peer transport or a TCP fallback relay. Direct paths normally provide the best performance. Relayed paths can still be playable, but the additional hop may raise latency or make a busy session less responsive.
Install and configure the dedicated server
Steam tools installation
- On the machine that will host the world, open Steam’s tools list and install Project Zomboid Dedicated Server.
- Start the dedicated-server files once so the required directories and configuration files are created.
- Configure the server name, password, world settings, spawn settings, administrator account, and any mods using the server’s normal configuration workflow.
- Record the game port configured in the server settings. Do not substitute a port from another installation; players must use the value this instance listens on.
SteamCMD or headless installation
For a Linux or other headless machine, use SteamCMD and the dedicated-server installation instructions. The network method is unchanged: SteamCMD supplies the server files, while Tailscale or ZeroTier supplies the private route. Run the server under a dedicated operating-system account where practical, keep its files backed up, and arrange a service or startup script so you can restart it consistently.
Host firewall rules
Allow the dedicated-server process to accept traffic on the overlay interface and its configured game port. Keep the rule as narrow as your operating system permits: limit it to the game executable and the private overlay network rather than opening the service on every public interface. You normally do not need to create an inbound rule on the home router. A host firewall can still block connections even when the overlay is healthy, so test it separately.
Method 1: host with Tailscale
Install the client everywhere
- Install Tailscale on the dedicated-server computer.
- Install it on every player device that will run Project Zomboid.
- Sign all devices into the same tailnet, or have the tailnet administrator invite the other players.
- Confirm that each device appears as an approved, online member. A device that is merely installed but not signed in cannot reach the server.
Find the server’s overlay address
Open the Tailscale client or administration view on the server and identify its Tailscale IP address or device name. Give friends the address that belongs to the server, not the home public address and not the LAN address that may change when the router assigns a new lease.

Start the world and connect
- Start the Project Zomboid dedicated-server process and wait for it to finish loading the world.
- On a player device, open Project Zomboid’s multiplayer menu and choose the direct-connect workflow.
- Enter the server’s Tailscale IP address and the game port configured in the server settings.
- Enter the server password, account details, and mod information required by that installation.
- Connect one player first. Once that test succeeds, invite the rest of the group using the same overlay address and port.
Read the connection path
Tailscale’s status information identifies whether the device has a direct connection, a peer-relay path, or a DERP-relay path. A direct path is preferable. “Peer-relay” or “relay” does not mean the setup failed; it means an intermediary is carrying traffic because a direct route was unavailable. Test the actual game session before changing anything. If the relay produces unacceptable delay, try the troubleshooting steps below or move the server to a VPS.
Method 2: host with ZeroTier
Create and authorize a private network
- Install ZeroTier on the dedicated-server computer and on every player device.
- Create a private ZeroTier network and note its network identifier.
- Join that network from each device.
- Authorize every member in the network administration view. An unapproved device may show the client as installed while remaining unable to communicate.
- Confirm that the server and players have addresses on the same ZeroTier network and that the client reports them as online.
Connect through the virtual interface
Start the dedicated server, identify the server’s ZeroTier address, and give that address plus the configured game port to your friends. They use Project Zomboid’s direct-connect screen, just as with Tailscale. The server’s public address is irrelevant to this connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnderstand TCP fallback relay
ZeroTier normally tries direct peer-to-peer connectivity. When UDP traffic or NAT hole punching is blocked, its TCP fallback relay can carry the session through a relay server. ZeroTier documents that relayed traffic is slower than a direct path. A fallback relay is therefore a recovery path, not a reason to reject the setup immediately. If the game remains unstable or delayed, test from another network and consider a VPS.
How friends join reliably
Send players a short, unambiguous set of details:
- The overlay they must install: Tailscale or ZeroTier.
- The account, invitation, or network identifier they must use.
- Any approval step required before their device can communicate.
- The server’s overlay IP address.
- The Project Zomboid game port configured on the server.
- The server password and the exact mod list or collection, if applicable.
Tell them to use direct connect rather than waiting for a public server-browser listing. Overlay-hosted servers are private-group services; public discovery is not an expected feature of this arrangement.

Security and administration
Control membership
Only authorize people who should reach the server. Remove former players from the tailnet or ZeroTier network when a campaign ends. A game password is useful, but it should not be your only control when the overlay itself grants network reachability.
Limit exposed services
Keep the server’s administrative interface, remote shell, and file shares off the overlay unless you need them. The dedicated server should be reachable on the game port, while unrelated services remain restricted by the host firewall. Do not weaken the firewall globally just because a first connection failed.
Back up the world
Back up the save directory and configuration before changing mods, updating the game, or experimenting with network settings. Overlay software changes the route, not the save format; a network repair cannot restore a corrupted world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting by symptom
The server is online, but nobody can connect
- Confirm the dedicated-server process finished starting and is listening on the configured game port.
- Verify every player is signed into the same Tailscale tailnet or authorized on the same ZeroTier network.
- Check that players are using the server’s overlay IP, not its public or local-router address.
- Review the host firewall rule and allow the game process on the overlay interface.
- Confirm the game build, server password, and required mods match.
One player connects, another cannot
Compare the failing device’s overlay status with the working device. The failing device may not be authorized, may be signed into a different account or network, or may have a local firewall blocking the virtual interface. Have that player test whether the server device appears online in the overlay client before changing Project Zomboid settings.
Best Value
Tailscale reports “relay”
A relay path can still carry the game. Keep it if the session is playable. If latency or disconnections make the world impractical, restart both clients, test from a different internet connection, and check whether the devices can establish a direct path. Do not add router forwarding solely to eliminate a relay unless you have decided that traditional hosting is preferable; a VPS is the cleaner alternative when direct connectivity remains unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
ZeroTier uses TCP fallback
TCP fallback indicates that direct UDP connectivity or NAT traversal was blocked. It may be sufficient for a small session, but relay performance is lower than direct peer-to-peer traffic. Check local firewall policies and restrictive networks first. If the fallback remains necessary and play quality is poor, relocate the server to a VPS or managed host.
The overlay client is connected, but the game times out
- Make sure the server is listening on the same port you entered in direct connect.
- Check for a host-firewall rule that allows the process only on the physical LAN interface.
- Temporarily test with mods disabled on a backup world to rule out a startup or synchronization failure.
- Confirm that the server is not still loading or repeatedly restarting; inspect its console and log output.
The ISP blocks the overlay
No consumer overlay can guarantee connectivity on every restricted network. If the ISP, school, workplace, or upstream firewall blocks the overlay entirely, stop treating it as a configuration problem. Move the dedicated server to a VPS or managed game-server host, where players connect through the provider’s network instead of your restricted home route.
Builds, mods, and updates
Keep the server and every client on the same Project Zomboid build. The cited dedicated-server guidance is oriented toward Build 42, so re-check the current instructions after a major game update rather than assuming an older installation procedure still applies.
Mods must also be synchronized. A player can have a healthy overlay connection and still fail to join because the server’s mod IDs, load order, map dependencies, or versions do not match the client. Change one variable at a time: first establish a vanilla connection, then add the mod set and retest.
When a VPS or managed host is the better answer
Choose hosted infrastructure when:
- Players cannot install or authorize Tailscale or ZeroTier.
- You need a server that is publicly discoverable rather than invitation-only.
- The world must remain online while your home computer is off.
- Your ISP blocks overlay traffic or repeatedly prevents usable peer paths.
- You want provider-level uptime, backups, or monitoring instead of maintaining the host yourself.
A VPS still requires you to install and administer the dedicated server, operating system, firewall, updates, and backups. A managed game host handles more of that work in exchange for recurring fees and less control. Neither option requires a port-forward rule on your home router because the server is no longer inside that home network.
A repeatable launch checklist
- Install the Project Zomboid dedicated server from Steam’s tools list or through SteamCMD.
- Complete the normal server configuration and record its configured game port.
- Install Tailscale or ZeroTier on the server and every player device.
- Place all devices in one tailnet or ZeroTier network and approve memberships.
- Allow the game process on the host’s overlay interface in the operating-system firewall.
- Start the server and wait for the world to finish loading.
- Give players the overlay IP, game port, password, and mod requirements.
- Have one player connect through direct connect before inviting the full group.
- Check whether the overlay path is direct or relayed and judge performance in the actual game.
- Back up the world before updates, mod changes, or major configuration edits.
The Bottom Line
For a private Project Zomboid group behind CGNAT, install the dedicated server normally and put the server plus every player on Tailscale or ZeroTier. Use the server’s overlay IP and configured game port for direct connect, keep the host firewall restricted to the game process and overlay interface, and accept that relay paths may add latency. If clients cannot install an overlay, public discovery or 24/7 uptime is required, or the ISP blocks the overlay, use a VPS or managed host instead.
