How to Fix ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED on Your Website

ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED is a DNS resolution failure. Follow this step-by-step guide to verify records, CNAME targets, nameserver delegation, public resolver responses, local network settings, and propagation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means DNS could not turn the hostname in your URL into an IP address. Start by checking the exact hostname, then verify its DNS records and nameserver delegation. If the domain works on another network, the problem is probably a local resolver or cache; if several public resolvers fail, investigate the domain’s authoritative DNS.

This guide takes you from the quickest checks to authoritative DNS, registrar delegation, resolver comparisons, local cache problems, and propagation delays.

What ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means

Chrome defines ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED as: “The hostname (web address) doesn’t exist or now has a different IP address.” In practical terms, the DNS lookup for the requested hostname did not return an address that your device could use. The browser has not yet reached your web server, so changing website files, restarting the application, or renewing a hosting plan will not repair this particular failure unless the underlying DNS destination is also corrected.

The hostname may be the zone apex, such as example.com, or a subdomain, such as www.example.com or blog.example.com. Each name can require its own DNS record. A working apex does not prove that every subdomain works, and a working subdomain does not prove that the apex is configured.

Start with a 10-minute triage

1. Record the exact hostname

Copy the hostname from the address bar rather than retyping it. Note whether it includes www, another subdomain, an unusual spelling, or a trailing dot. Check the zone apex and every subdomain that visitors actually use. A one-character typo can produce the same browser error as a completely broken DNS service.

2. Test the same URL from another network

Open the hostname on a phone using cellular data, a different Wi-Fi connection, or another device. If unrelated websites also fail, troubleshoot the local internet connection or configured DNS server first. If only this hostname fails while other sites load, continue with the domain checks below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Classify what you observe

Observation Likely branch Immediate action
The hostname is misspelled or the subdomain was never created Wrong hostname Correct the URL or create the required DNS record
The apex or subdomain has no required record Authoritative DNS configuration Add the expected A, AAAA, or CNAME record and verify its target
A CNAME exists but its target does not resolve Broken CNAME chain Correct the target or repair the target’s DNS
Several public resolvers fail Domain, delegation, or authoritative-server issue Check registrar nameservers, NS records, DNSSEC, and authoritative responses
Only one resolver or one network fails Local or resolver-specific issue Flush stale state, inspect DNS settings, and test another resolver or network
The error remains immediately after a DNS edit Cached old answer Wait for TTL and propagation, then test from multiple resolvers

Verify the records in the authoritative DNS service

Find where the zone is actually managed

Sign in to the DNS control plane that is authoritative for the domain. This may be your registrar, a dedicated DNS provider, or a hosting partner. Editing records in a dashboard that is not delegated to the domain will have no effect on public lookups. If your hosting company supplied a required record, use the exact name and destination it gave you.

Check the apex record

For example.com, inspect the zone apex (often displayed as @ or the bare domain). Confirm that the expected A record points to the intended IPv4 address and that any required AAAA record points to the intended IPv6 address. Remove an obsolete address only after confirming that no service still uses it. A missing record, a record entered under the wrong name, or an address copied with a typographical error can all prevent resolution or send visitors to the wrong service.

Check each active subdomain

Inspect www, blog, app, and any other hostname published in links, bookmarks, advertising, or application settings. A subdomain normally has an A or AAAA record of its own, or a CNAME that points to another hostname. Do not assume that adding a record for the apex automatically creates www.

Validate a CNAME setup

A CNAME replaces an address record for the name where it is placed. Verify all three parts:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The CNAME is present on the authoritative nameservers, not only in an inactive or old DNS dashboard.
  2. The CNAME name exactly matches the hostname visitors request.
  3. The CNAME target is spelled correctly and itself resolves through DNS.

Follow the chain one name at a time. If www.example.com points to site.host.example and that target has no usable A or AAAA record, the original CNAME will not produce a destination. A CNAME at a name that also has conflicting address records can also cause provider validation failures; follow the DNS provider’s required record pattern rather than mixing incompatible entries.

Check the provider-specific target

Some hosting platforms require a particular CNAME target, while others issue an IP address for an A record. Copy the destination exactly, including any required hostname punctuation. If DNS is managed by a hosting partner, make the correction in that partner’s control plane and confirm that the partner is the service delegated by your registrar.

Confirm registrar delegation and authoritative nameservers

DNS records are published by authoritative nameservers. The registrar must delegate your domain to the same nameservers that contain the records you just checked. After registering a domain, transferring it, changing DNS providers, or restoring an old configuration, delegation is a frequent failure point.

Compare the two control panels

  1. In the registrar account, record the nameserver hostnames assigned to the domain.
  2. In the DNS provider account, confirm that those same nameservers host the intended zone and records.
  3. Check the domain’s NS records and make sure there is no accidental mixture of old and new providers.
  4. If the provider requires DNSSEC, verify that the DS record at the registrar matches the current DNSSEC keys. A stale or incorrect DS record can make otherwise correct DNS answers fail validation.

When delegation points to an old provider, edits made at the new provider remain invisible. When delegation lists a nameserver that is offline or does not contain the zone, resolvers may return a failure even though another nameserver has the correct data.

Compare independent public resolvers

Testing more than one public resolver separates a domain-wide failure from a problem on your local network or with one resolver. Replace example.com with the exact hostname that fails. Google’s examples use a trailing dot when following the fully qualified name; include it if you want to make the absolute hostname explicit.

Windows

nslookup example.com resolver1.opendns.com
nslookup example.com dns.quad9.net
nslookup example.com one.one.one.one

macOS or Linux

dig example.com @resolver1.opendns.com
dig example.com @dns.quad9.net
dig example.com @one.one.one.one

Run the commands for the apex and for the failing subdomain separately. Record whether each resolver returns an A or AAAA address, follows a CNAME, or reports that the name does not exist. A response from one resolver is not proof that every resolver has updated; compare the answers and their TTL values.

Interpret the comparison

  • All tested resolvers fail: focus on the hostname, authoritative records, registrar delegation, nameserver availability, and DNSSEC.
  • Only one resolver fails: the domain is probably published correctly, so investigate that resolver or the network path using it.
  • Public resolvers succeed but your device fails: inspect the device or router’s configured DNS server and clear stale local state.
  • The apex succeeds but a subdomain fails: work on the subdomain’s record or CNAME target rather than changing the apex.

Clear local DNS state and check the network path

When the same hostname resolves on another network, the authoritative zone may already be correct. Restart the browser and test a second browser to rule out a stale browser session. Then inspect which DNS servers your operating system and router are configured to use. A manually configured, unreachable, or filtering resolver can produce an error even when public resolvers return the correct address.

Use the operating system’s documented DNS-cache flush function for your specific version, then reconnect to the network and repeat the public-resolver tests. If the router supplies DNS settings, restart or renew its connection only after recording any custom configuration you need to preserve. Security software, parental-control filters, VPN clients, and captive portals can also intercept DNS; temporarily test without those layers when permitted by your security policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the hostname works on cellular data but not Wi-Fi, compare the Wi-Fi router’s DNS settings with the resolver that succeeded on cellular data. Testing another device on the same Wi-Fi distinguishes a device cache from a network-wide resolver problem.

Allow for TTL and propagation

A corrected DNS record does not replace every cached answer instantly. Recursive resolvers keep responses until their TTL expires, and different networks may refresh at different times. Cloudflare’s NXDOMAIN guidance notes that changes may take a few minutes to begin appearing, but the actual delay depends on the previous TTL and existing resolver caches.

An old negative answer is especially confusing: a resolver may have cached that the hostname did not exist before you created the record. Retest from several public resolvers after the relevant TTL has elapsed. Do not repeatedly change the record while caches are still expiring; each change makes it harder to identify which value is currently visible.

Common failure branches and their fixes

A typo or nonexistent hostname

Correct the link, bookmark, application setting, or DNS name. If the name is intentional, create the corresponding record in the authoritative zone and wait for caches to update. Check both the bare domain and the www form because they are separate hostnames.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Missing A or AAAA record

Add the address record required by the hosting service at the exact owner name. Verify that the address is current and belongs to the intended service. If IPv6 is not configured correctly, remove an incorrect AAAA record or repair the IPv6 destination; clients that prefer IPv6 can fail even when the A record is correct.

Broken CNAME target

Correct the CNAME spelling or replace it with the record type required by the destination provider. Query the target directly with nslookup or dig. A target that returns no address, points to a retired service, or is itself delegated incorrectly must be repaired at its authoritative DNS.

Registrar points to the wrong nameservers

Restore the nameserver set supplied by the active DNS provider. Remove stale nameservers left from a previous provider and confirm that every delegated server serves the same intended zone. Changes at the registrar can take time to appear through recursive caches, so verify with multiple public resolvers rather than relying on one immediate lookup.

DNSSEC validation failure

When several resolvers fail while the zone appears populated, inspect DNSSEC status at the registrar and DNS provider. A DS record that references old keys can make validating resolvers reject the zone. Update the DS record or DNSSEC configuration using the provider’s documented rollover procedure; do not delete security records blindly during an active key rotation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a repeatable recovery procedure

  1. Write down the failing URL and separate its apex and subdomain components.
  2. Test the URL from a second network and note whether other websites work.
  3. Check the authoritative DNS dashboard for the exact A, AAAA, or CNAME record.
  4. Resolve any CNAME target independently and remove spelling or destination errors.
  5. Compare the registrar’s delegated nameservers with the provider that contains the intended zone.
  6. Run the three Windows nslookup commands or the three macOS/Linux dig commands against the failing hostname.
  7. If only your network fails, inspect its DNS settings, flush local cache, and retest from another resolver.
  8. If public resolvers fail, correct the domain, delegation, authoritative service, or DNSSEC before changing local settings.
  9. After a correction, wait through the relevant TTL and repeat the same resolver checks.

Prevent the error after the site is restored

  • Keep an inventory of the apex and every production subdomain, including whether each uses A, AAAA, or CNAME.
  • Record which registrar holds delegation and which provider serves the authoritative zone.
  • Make DNS changes in one authoritative control plane and remove abandoned provider entries.
  • Before changing nameservers, copy the complete existing zone so mail and verification records are not lost.
  • Document CNAME targets and the service that owns each target.
  • Review DNSSEC status before and after nameserver changes or key rollovers.
  • After publishing a change, test from at least two independent public resolvers and from a different network.
  • Keep the old service available until resolver caches have had time to expire when a destination or nameserver is being migrated.

When to contact the registrar, DNS provider, or host

Contact the registrar when the delegated nameservers are wrong, the domain is newly registered or transferred, or a DS record cannot be updated. Contact the DNS provider when its authoritative nameservers return different zones, omit a record you saved, or report a service outage. Contact the hosting provider when the required A or CNAME destination is unclear, the target hostname does not resolve, or the service has changed its published endpoint.

Include the exact failing hostname, the time of each test, the resolver commands and results, the delegated nameservers, and whether another network succeeds. This information lets support distinguish a local cache from an authoritative DNS or delegation failure without asking you to repeat unrelated application troubleshooting.
