Host The Decursio Project – Expert from its official CurseForge server-pack ZIP, not by copying mods one at a time. Extract the pack, install a Java runtime that meets the selected Forge package’s requirement, start the included server script, accept the Minecraft EULA, configure server.properties, and allocate at least 5 GB of RAM while leaving additional memory for the operating system. Every player must use the same Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge profile and the exact same Decursio release.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The server can run on a home machine, an Unraid system, a Docker host, or a managed Minecraft panel. Whichever route you choose, use the console’s stop command (or the panel’s STOP control) before shutting down. The project specifically warns that abruptly closing a multiplayer server can cause game-stage problems.

What you are hosting
The Decursio Project – Expert is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. A multiplayer server is not compatible with a different Minecraft version, a different Forge loader, or a different Decursio release. The client and server need the same pack files, and players should avoid adding or removing mods unless the pack documentation explicitly allows that change.
CurseForge publishes separate server-pack archives. Use the archive that matches the profile your players have installed; do not build a server by manually copying the client’s mods folder. The server ZIP contains the Forge-side files and launch material intended for server use.

Requirements before installation
A machine with enough memory
The project description states, “5GB of Ram minimum.” Treat that as memory reserved for the Java server process, not as the total amount installed in the computer. Leave headroom for the operating system, the Java runtime, file caching, and any other services running on the host. A computer with only 5 GB of physical memory will usually be unable to provide the server with the full minimum without heavy swapping.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If you are upgrading a desktop, “8GB DDR4 RAM module” is a useful search term, but the module must match the motherboard’s DDR generation, capacity limits, slot layout, and supported speed. Check the machine or motherboard manual before buying; DDR4 is not interchangeable with DDR3 or DDR5.
Java and Forge compatibility
Install a Java runtime compatible with the Forge package in the server ZIP. The available project information does not state an exact Java major version, so do not assume one from a generic Minecraft tutorial. Read the server-pack instructions or the Forge installer notes that accompany the selected release and install the required runtime for that package. If the included script reports an unsupported class version, an invalid Java executable, or a missing runtime, correct Java first rather than replacing the pack’s files.
Network and administration access
- Use a dedicated directory that the account running the server can read and write.
- Ensure the host firewall permits the port configured in
server.properties. - If people will connect from outside your home network, configure the router to forward that same port to the server’s local address and give the host a stable local address.
- Keep administrative access separate from the public game address. Only trusted operators should have access to the server console and files.
- Plan a backup location with enough space for the world, player data, configuration, and any scripts you customize.
Install the official server pack
- Create the server directory. Make a new folder dedicated to this Decursio instance. Avoid extracting into a general Downloads folder where unrelated ZIP files and partial installations can be mixed together.
- Choose the matching SERVER.zip. Open the official Decursio Project – Expert files listing on CurseForge and download the server archive for the exact release your players will use. Confirm both the release label and the 1.16.5 Forge metadata before downloading.
- Extract the complete archive. Unzip everything into the dedicated directory. Preserve the folder structure and every file supplied by the pack. Do not replace the included Forge files with files from another Minecraft installation and do not assemble a server from individual client mods.
- Install the required Java runtime. Follow the requirement stated by the selected server pack or Forge package. Verify that the account launching the server can invoke that Java installation.
- Run the included Forge/server script once. Use the launcher supplied in the extracted pack rather than inventing a new set of Java arguments. The first run normally creates the server files and stops when Minecraft requests EULA confirmation.
- Accept the EULA only if you agree to it. Open the generated
eula.txt, review the Minecraft EULA, and change the setting toeula=trueonly after accepting those terms. Save the file and run the supplied script again. - Wait for a complete first start. Let Forge finish generating configuration, libraries, the world, and logs. The console should reach a ready state before anyone attempts to join. The first start can take longer than later starts because files are being created.
- Record the release and location. Write down the exact Decursio label, Minecraft/Forge version, Java runtime used, server directory, and configured port. This prevents players from accidentally installing a different profile.
Configure server.properties
Stop the process before editing configuration. Open server.properties in a plain-text editor and change only the values you understand. The file is regenerated or expanded as Minecraft features are initialized, so keep a backup of your working configuration.

After saving, start the server again and watch the console for configuration errors. If the process starts with defaults, check that you edited the file in the active server directory rather than a second extracted copy.
Give players the correct connection details
Players on the same LAN
People on the same home or office network can connect using the host computer’s local network address and the configured port. The host’s firewall still has to allow inbound connections. Reserve a local address for the server so the address does not change after a router restart.
Players connecting over the internet
Provide the public address of the network and the server port, and forward that port from the router to the host’s stable local address. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, because a test from inside the same LAN can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong. Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT; in that case, ordinary port forwarding may not be possible without a provider-supported public address or a different hosting route.
The client checklist
Before troubleshooting networking, have the player verify all of the following:
- Minecraft is 1.16.5.
- The Forge loader matches the server pack.
- The exact Decursio release label matches, including beta versus release builds.
- The player has not added, removed, or replaced mods.
- The player is using the profile intended for this server rather than a similarly named pack.
A player who fails any item can receive a “missing mods,” version, registry, or handshake error even when the server itself is reachable.

Start, monitor, and stop the server safely
Starting
Launch the script supplied in the server pack from the server directory. Keep the console visible during startup so you can see Forge errors, world-generation messages, and the final ready indication. On a headless machine, use the host’s normal service, terminal, or panel method, but make sure it preserves the pack’s supplied Java options.
During play
Keep an eye on the console and logs, especially after adding a player, loading a new area, or changing a configuration file. Do not delete world or player-data files to clear an error unless you have a verified backup and understand the consequence. If the machine is also running storage, web, or media services, watch memory pressure so the server can retain the project’s 5 GB minimum allocation.
Stopping
When maintenance is finished, type stop in the server console and wait for the process to close. The Decursio project explicitly advises using this command when closing a multiplayer server because an abrupt window close or power-off can leave game-stage data in a bad state. A hosting panel should use its STOP control, which should send the same orderly shutdown rather than killing the process.
Do not force-close the terminal, kill Java, or reboot while players are still saving. If the host has frozen and an emergency power-off is unavoidable, make a backup of the surviving files before attempting another start and check the logs for world or stage errors.

| Route | How it works | Advantages | Responsibilities and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct self-hosting | Run the official SERVER.zip on a Windows, Linux, or other compatible machine you control. | Maximum control over files, Java options, backups, and access policy; no panel abstraction. | You handle patching, firewalling, router configuration, monitoring, backups, power reliability, and keeping the machine online. |
| Unraid | Use the Community Apps listing’s dedicated The-Decursio-Project template. | The template exposes operator (OPS) and Java-option settings and fits an existing Unraid server. |
Verify the template’s pack tag, mapped storage, memory allocation, and port before starting. You remain responsible for backups and updates. |
| Docker | Run the goobaroo/decursioprojectexpert image and select the desired pack tag. |
Containerized deployment can simplify repeatable starts and isolation. | The image downloads the tagged pack on first run instead of shipping the mod files inside the image. Persist the world and configuration outside the container so recreating it does not erase data. |
| Managed Minecraft hosting | Install the pack through a provider’s game panel. | The provider can supply an always-on machine, console controls, networking, and infrastructure maintenance. | Confirm current pricing, RAM limits, backups, file access, Java support, and the exact pack version. GhostCap’s panel uses modpack ID 457186 and an install action; VeryGames lists the pack and lets you select a version. Panel labels and availability can change. |
A managed plan is not automatically better: a plan that cannot allocate the project’s 5 GB minimum, expose the required Java runtime, or install the exact release will fail compatibility checks. Conversely, self-hosting is inexpensive only if you already have suitable hardware and are prepared to maintain it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups, updates, and routine maintenance
Back up before changes
With the server stopped, copy the world directory, player data, server.properties, allow-list and operator files, Forge configuration, and any custom scripts to storage outside the live directory. Keep more than one backup generation and periodically test that an archive can actually be opened. A backup made while Java is writing region files may be incomplete, so use the orderly stop procedure first.
Updating to another release
Do not replace only a few mods in an existing installation. When the community chooses another Decursio release, download that release’s complete SERVER.zip, make a full backup, and test the new files in a separate directory. Confirm that the client profile uses the same Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge release and pack label before moving players. Treat the old directory as a rollback copy until the new world has been checked.
Keeping the host healthy
- Leave free disk space for world growth, logs, Forge libraries, and backups.
- Apply operating-system and Java security updates during a maintenance window, then start the server and inspect the console.
- Document who can operate the console and where the backups are stored.
- Review firewall and router rules whenever the host’s local address or configured port changes.
- Announce maintenance before stopping so players are not disconnected during a save.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server exits immediately or Java reports an error
Confirm that you extracted the entire archive, are running the supplied script from the correct directory, and installed the Java runtime required by that Forge package. Because the project information does not establish one universal Java major version, follow the selected pack’s or Forge installer’s requirement instead of copying a version from an unrelated tutorial. Read the first error in the console; later stack traces are often consequences of that initial failure.
The server keeps asking for the EULA
Stop the process, open the eula.txt that was created in the active server directory, and set eula=true only after accepting the EULA. Save it as plain text, check that the filename was not changed to eula.txt.txt, and restart the same script. Editing a second copy of the file has no effect.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
A player cannot join
First compare Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge, the exact Decursio release, and client-side mod changes. If those match, test the address from the correct network, verify the host firewall, and check router forwarding against the port in server.properties. A timeout usually points to reachability; a missing-mod or registry message usually points to a client/server file mismatch.
Players report stage or progression problems
Check whether the server was closed by killing the process or powering off the machine. The project warns that incorrect shutdown can cause game-stage issues. Restore the newest known-good backup if world data is damaged, then resume using the console stop command for every planned shutdown.
Rendering mods cause instability or long starts
The project marks Magnesium and Rubidium/Oculus as incompatible. OptiFine is optional for frame-rate improvements, but it can increase load times, and the project asks users not to report issues while it is installed. Remove those client-side changes when diagnosing a server or connection problem so that the supported pack configuration is tested first.
The server is slow or runs out of memory
Verify that Java receives at least the project’s 5 GB minimum and that the host has additional physical memory for the operating system. Close competing applications, inspect logs for repeated errors, and check available disk space. Raising the player limit or adding visual mods does not create more memory; solve the host-resource constraint first.
Final launch checklist
- Selected the official CurseForge SERVER.zip that matches the community’s Decursio release.
- Confirmed Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge on both server and clients.
- Installed the Java runtime required by that pack or Forge package.
- Extracted every archive file into a dedicated, writable directory.
- Accepted the EULA and completed one clean startup.
- Configured
motd,max-players,difficulty, allow-listing, and the listening port. - Reserved at least 5 GB for Java and left headroom for the operating system.
- Opened the host firewall and, for internet play, forwarded the configured port.
- Tested a connection using an exact matching client profile.
- Created a backup and documented the release, directory, Java runtime, and port.
- Use
stopor the hosting panel’s STOP control for every normal shutdown.
Bottom line
The reliable method is deliberately simple: use the official versioned server pack, keep Forge and the modpack release identical on every machine, provide Java with at least 5 GB while preserving host headroom, and operate the process through its supplied script. Self-hosting, Unraid, Docker, and managed panels all work when they preserve those requirements. Safe shutdown with stop, tested backups, and disciplined version control prevent the progression and game-stage problems that are hardest to repair.
