It is peer-to-peer world hosting, not a conventional dedicated server: your computer acts as the server, the world is free to host, and the host must stay online for friends to play. The official workflow is to install Essential for a compatible modloader, select Host World, choose a world, configure its basic settings, and invite friends.

What Essential actually hosts
Essential turns a single-player Minecraft Java Edition world into a session that invited friends can join. The host computer provides the running world and connection, so there is no separate machine keeping the map available in the background.
- Host-controlled: The player who opens the world is also providing the server session.
- Free world hosting: Essential describes this hosting model as free.
- Host required: The host must remain online and in the world. If the host closes Minecraft, loses the session, or goes offline, friends cannot continue playing in that world.
- Small-group design: Essential’s official hosting documentation states that up to eight players can be in one world at a time.
That model is convenient for a group that plays together on a schedule. It is not suitable when people need to join at any hour without the original host.

Requirements before you install
Use the official Java Edition
Essential works with the official version of Minecraft Java Edition. Install and launch the game through the official Minecraft Launcher or a supported third-party launcher that uses your legitimate game account. Bedrock Edition cannot load Java mods, so a Bedrock-only installation cannot use Essential.
Some PC purchases are sold as a combined “Java & Bedrock Edition” package. For Essential, the relevant component is Java Edition; the Bedrock entitlement does not make a Bedrock world compatible with the mod.
Choose one Minecraft version and one modloader
Every participant needs the same Minecraft version and the same loader family. Essential supports Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge, but a Fabric profile, a Forge profile, and a NeoForge profile are different environments. Essential’s manual guide commonly recommends Fabric because of its modern architecture and broad mod ecosystem, but you can use another supported loader when your chosen mods require it.
Essential’s homepage currently lists support for Minecraft 1.8, 1.12, and versions 1.16 through 1.21 on Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. Compatibility changes as Minecraft and Essential release new builds, so check the current Essential compatibility information when you install rather than assuming every listed version has the latest release.
Prepare matching mod files
For a modded world, all players must have the exact same mods and versions installed. “The same mod” means the same file release, not merely the same project name. The Minecraft version, loader, Essential build, gameplay mods, libraries, and configuration expectations must line up closely enough for the clients to connect.

Keep a copy of the working mod set in a folder or archive. That gives everyone a reference when a later update introduces a mismatch.
Install Essential
Option 1: Use the Essential installer
Essential’s installer supports the default Minecraft Launcher as well as Prism Launcher and CurseForge Launcher. This is generally the simplest route because it can place the mod in the launcher instance you select.
- Install or update the official Minecraft Java Edition launcher and sign in.
- Decide which Minecraft version and loader your group will use: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
- Install that loader and create or select its launcher profile or instance.
- Run the Essential installer and choose the matching launcher instance. Do not install Essential into a different Minecraft version from the one your world uses.
- Start Minecraft with the new profile. Confirm that the title screen or pause menu contains Essential’s social features and a Host World option.
Option 2: Install manually
Manual installation is useful when your launcher uses a custom instance directory or when the installer does not recognize the profile.
- Download the Essential build that matches your exact Minecraft version and modloader.
- Close Minecraft and the launcher before copying files.
- Place the Essential mod file in the
modsfolder for the selected instance. A standard Windows installation commonly uses%appdata%.minecraftmods; macOS commonly uses~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods; Linux commonly uses~/.minecraft/mods. Prism, CurseForge, and other launchers usually have a separatemodsfolder inside each instance, so use that instance’s folder instead of the global one. - Put every additional mod and required library for the chosen pack in the same instance.
- Launch the profile and check that Minecraft reaches the main menu without a loader or dependency error.
If you use a launcher with isolated instances, repeat the installation inside the instance that will actually launch the world. Installing a file in the default folder does not automatically install it in every custom instance.
Make a compatible modded setup for friends
Build one known-good profile first
The host should launch the intended profile and open a test world before distributing the setup. This separates an installation problem from a connection problem. Once the profile loads successfully, record the Minecraft version, loader, Essential version, and every mod filename and version.

Distribute the same files
Have each friend install the same loader and copy the same mod files into the corresponding instance. Do not let one player update a single mod independently while others keep the old release. If a mod has required libraries, optional dependencies, or a configuration file that the author says must be shared, include those as well.
Client-side and server-side distinctions
Essential’s documented condition for hosting with mods is that everyone has the exact same mods and versions installed. Even when a particular mod is normally described as client-side, do not assume it can be omitted from a participant’s profile for an Essential session. Use the same tested pack for everyone unless the mod’s documentation and the Essential setup explicitly confirm an exception.
Host a world step by step
- Launch the Minecraft profile containing Essential, your chosen loader, and the tested mod set.
- At the title screen, select Host World. You can also open the pause menu while already in a world and select Host World there.
- Choose the world you want to share. For a new game, create the world first; for an existing save, select its entry.
- Review the basic world settings shown by Essential and press Next.
- Select the friends you want to invite, then press Done.
- Keep Minecraft running and remain connected while friends play. Your computer is providing the active server session.
Essential’s social and invitation flow is used for friends to join. Invite only the people intended for that world, and make sure they are launching the matching Minecraft profile before accepting the invitation.
How friends join
- Install the official Java Edition and the same Minecraft version, loader, Essential build, and mod files used by the host.
- Launch that matching profile and sign in.
- Open Essential’s social or invitation interface and accept the host’s invitation when it appears.
- Join the offered world through Essential’s join flow.
A friend using a different loader, a different Minecraft version, or a different mod release may be unable to connect even when the game itself starts normally. The first troubleshooting step is to compare the two profiles rather than repeatedly sending invitations.
Essential’s practical limits
| Question | Essential hosting |
|---|---|
| Is it a dedicated server? | No. It hosts the world from the participating host’s computer using peer-to-peer technology. |
| Does the host have to stay online? | Yes. The official documentation says the host is the server; when the host is offline, there is nowhere for other players to connect. |
| How many players can be in one world? | Up to eight players at a time, according to Essential’s official Start Hosting documentation. Treat this as the documented simultaneous-player limit, not a performance guarantee for every modpack. |
| Can players use different mod versions? | No. Essential requires everyone to use the exact same mods and versions for a modded world. |
| Does it host Bedrock worlds? | No. Essential is a Java Edition mod and cannot be loaded by Bedrock Edition. |
| Is hosting charged separately? | Essential describes its world-hosting feature as free. You still need a legitimate Minecraft Java Edition license and each player needs their own game access. |
Troubleshoot the most common failures
“Host World” is missing
- Confirm that you launched the profile where Essential is installed, not an unmodded vanilla profile.
- Check that the Essential build matches the Minecraft version and loader.
- For a custom launcher, verify the file is in that instance’s
modsdirectory. - Launch the game once with only the loader and Essential enabled. If the option appears, add other mods back in small groups to identify a conflict.
The game crashes during startup
- Read the first dependency or version error in the launcher log; later errors are often consequences.
- Verify that every mod was built for the selected Minecraft version and loader.
- Remove duplicate copies of a mod from both a global and an instance-specific folder.
- Restore the last known-good mod set, then add updates one at a time.
A friend receives an incompatible-version or missing-mod message
- Have the host and friend open their instance folders side by side.
- Compare Minecraft version and loader first.
- Compare Essential and every other mod by exact filename and release number.
- Check required libraries and dependencies.
- Restart both launchers after correcting the files, then send a new invitation.
Copying a modpack’s visible project names is not enough if the launcher resolved different file releases. An exported instance or a direct copy of the host’s tested mod files is less error-prone.

The invitation works but the world cannot be joined
- Confirm that the host is still online and has the world open. Closing the world ends the session for everyone.
- Make sure both players are signed in and running the same profile.
- Temporarily test with a new world using the same mod set. If the new world works, the problem may be specific to the original save or its mods.
- Restart Minecraft on both sides before trying another invitation.
The host goes offline and friends are disconnected
This is expected behavior for Essential’s hosting model, not a setting that can be fixed inside the world. The host computer is the server, so the session ends when the host leaves. If the group needs a world that remains available while the original host is away, use a managed Minecraft server instead.
The group wants more than eight players
Essential’s official documentation sets the world limit at eight simultaneous players. Splitting the group into separate worlds does not increase the limit for one session. A managed server is the appropriate category to investigate when the required player count exceeds that documented cap, although its actual limit depends on the selected plan and configuration.

Keeping a shared world safe
Back up before changing mods
Make a copy of the world save before removing mods, changing loader versions, or opening it after a major Minecraft update. Store the backup outside the active saves folder so an automatic cleanup or reinstall cannot remove both copies.
Keep one canonical profile
Choose one person to maintain the working mod list and communicate changes before anyone updates. Record the Minecraft version, loader, Essential build, and mod versions in a simple text file. This prevents “works on my machine” problems caused by silent launcher updates.
Control invitations
Only invite people who should access the world. Because the host is running the session from a personal computer, close the world when the group is finished and avoid leaving invitations open to unintended players.

Essential versus managed Minecraft hosting
Both approaches let friends play together, but they solve different scheduling problems.
| Decision factor | Essential | Managed hosting category |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | World is available while the host is online and hosting. | Designed to remain online independently of one player’s game session. |
| Setup | Install a launcher profile, modloader, Essential, and matching client mods; then invite friends. | Usually involves choosing a plan, using a server panel, selecting a server version, and uploading or installing server files. |
| Player scale | Officially documented maximum of eight players in one world. | Limits vary by provider plan, software configuration, and the modpack being run. |
| Mod consistency | All Essential participants must use the exact same mods and versions. | Clients still need to match the server’s required software, while the server itself can stay online without the original host. |
| Cost model | Essential describes its world hosting as free; Minecraft licenses remain required. | Managed servers are a paid category with prices that vary by provider and plan. |
Choose Essential when a small group can coordinate around one host’s availability and wants the quickest free setup. Choose managed hosting when persistence, unattended access, or a larger group matters more than avoiding a recurring hosting fee.
Updating without breaking the session
- Back up the world while the current profile still works.
- Check Essential’s current compatibility information for the target Minecraft version and loader.
- Test the new profile in a copy of the world, not the only original save.
- Update the host and every player’s profile to the same versions.
- Open the copied world and confirm that the group can connect before switching the live save.
Because Essential and Minecraft compatibility changes over time, verify release files immediately before an upgrade. A profile that worked on an earlier version may need a new Essential build or updated dependencies.
Quick pre-session checklist
- Everyone owns and launches Minecraft Java Edition through a legitimate account.
- Everyone uses the same Minecraft version.
- Everyone uses the same loader: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
- Essential is installed in the active launcher instance for every player.
- Every mod and required library matches exactly.
- The host has a recent backup and plans to remain online.
- The group contains no more than eight simultaneous players.
Bottom line
Essential is the simplest way to share a modded Java world when one person can host the session. Install the matching loader and Essential build, give every player the identical mod set, select Host World, and keep the host online. It is free world hosting for a small group, not an always-on dedicated server; use managed hosting when friends must play without the original host or when the group exceeds eight players.
