To host a YouTube livestream giveaway, publish clear official rules before the stream, make entry free, explain the entry window and winner-selection process on air, and award the prize exactly as promised. You—not YouTube—are responsible for running the contest and complying with applicable laws.
Plan the giveaway before you schedule the stream
Decide the mechanics first, then put them in official rules viewers can read before entering. YouTube says, “You’re solely responsible for your contest,” and requires creators to administer it and award prizes according to the published rules. See YouTube’s contest policies and guidelines.

- Organizer and eligibility: Identify who is running the giveaway and who may enter. Set any age or location limits that apply.
- Prize: Describe it accurately, including any relevant conditions.
- Entry method and window: Explain exactly how to enter, when entries open and close, and what counts as one eligible entry.
- Winner process: State when and how the winner will be selected and contacted, the deadline to respond, and what happens if the winner cannot be reached or is ineligible.
- Privacy: Explain what personal information you collect, why you need it, and how you will use it. Collect only what is needed and use it as disclosed.
- Required disclosures: Include any disclosures required by the laws that apply to your contest.
Keep entry free and avoid engagement manipulation
YouTube requires contests to be free to enter: “Your contest must be free of charge to enter (don’t forget to check your local lottery laws!).” Do not require a purchase, paid message, or other payment as a condition of entry. YouTube also prohibits contests that manipulate views, likes, dislikes, or subscriber counts to misrepresent genuine engagement. A simple entry instruction is safer than making entry depend on those metrics.

Choose a livestream and entry method that will work
YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder livestream workflows. Choose based on your equipment and format; a computer webcam is only one option. YouTube’s live streaming tips say the computer webcam workflow requires a computer with a webcam. Its guide also says you need a verified channel and no livestream restrictions in the past 90 days to livestream.
If you plan to take entries in chat, remember that live chat appears on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. YouTube’s live streams help page documents a limit of up to 11 messages per 30 seconds and 200 characters per message. These platform limits can change, so check the current help page before announcing your instructions. Keep the entry message short and state a clear closing time.
Chat entry is not suitable for every stream: YouTube says live chat is disabled on streams marked made for kids. Check your audience setting and channel status before promising that viewers can enter through chat. See YouTube’s guidance on avoiding livestream restrictions.

Publish rules that meet YouTube’s requirements
Make the official rules available before the giveaway begins, and point viewers to them on the stream. YouTube requires the rules to link to its Community Guidelines and to state that entries must comply with them. The rules must also clearly say YouTube is not the sponsor, release YouTube from contest-related liability, include legally required disclosures, and provide a privacy notice explaining how any collected personal data will be used. Do not imply YouTube sponsors or endorses the giveaway without prior written consent.
Use rules that match the actual giveaway. If the stream, chat prompt, entry deadline, or selection method changes, do not quietly apply different terms: run the contest and award its prize as the published rules describe. The exact legal wording depends on the jurisdictions and circumstances involved.
Explain entry on air and administer it consistently
- At the beginning, point to the rules. Name the organizer, summarize eligibility and prize, and tell viewers where to read the full terms.
- Give the entry instruction plainly. If chat is the entry channel, state the exact message or action that counts, the eligible window, and the closing time. Do not make entry contingent on likes, subscriptions, or other engagement metrics.
- Repeat the key details before entries close. Remind viewers of the cutoff and selection and contact process so they can participate under the published terms.
- Identify eligible entries using one consistent process. Keep sufficient records to administer the giveaway and verify the result. Avoid collecting personal details in public chat.
- Select and contact the winner as promised. Follow the announced method and claim deadline; document the outcome and award the stated prize under the rules.
- Handle entrant information only as disclosed. Use it for the stated contest purpose and limit collection to what you need.
