Use a normal Minecraft: Java Edition server and let each player install Fabulously Optimized on their own computer. Fabulously Optimized is documented as a strictly client-sided Fabric modpack, so the server usually does not need the pack installed. Your server and every player still need to run the same Minecraft version, while clients may join with the optimized pack or with an ordinary vanilla installation if the server accepts vanilla clients.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
The reliable workflow is to choose and freeze a Minecraft version, install the Java runtime appropriate to that version, deploy a compatible Java server, test it with a vanilla client, and then install the matching Fabulously Optimized release on players’ machines. Treat version changes as maintenance events, keep backups, and size the machine from the actual workload rather than from a universal RAM claim.

What Fabulously Optimized changes—and what it does not
Fabulously Optimized is a performance- and graphics-focused modpack built for the Fabric mod loader. It does not add content such as new blocks, dimensions, mobs, or world-generation systems. Its purpose is to make the client render and run more efficiently while preserving ordinary Minecraft worlds and server compatibility.
That distinction determines the hosting design. The project describes the pack as “a strictly client-sided modpack” and says it works mostly like vanilla on servers that allow vanilla clients. In practical terms, the server remains a conventional Minecraft: Java Edition server. The optimization files live in the client installation used by each player.

The server-side consequence
Do not copy the entire Fabulously Optimized pack into the server’s mods directory unless a specific component’s documentation explicitly says it has a server component. The normal baseline is a compatible Java server that accepts vanilla clients. Installing the pack on a player’s computer improves that player’s experience without changing the world’s content rules.
What players can expect
A player using Fabulously Optimized can connect to the same ordinary world as a player using an unmodified client, provided both clients are on the server’s exact Minecraft version and the server permits vanilla clients. The pack is not a substitute for matching a server that requires a different mod list or a different game version.
Choose the version before you install anything
Version discipline prevents most avoidable connection and update problems. Write down the exact Minecraft version you intend to host, then select the server software, Java runtime, Fabric Loader choice for clients, and Fabulously Optimized release around that version.
Match the complete version string
- The server must run the same Minecraft version as the clients joining it.
- Choose the Fabulously Optimized release that targets that exact Minecraft version.
- Install the Fabric Loader version supported by that release rather than choosing a loader at random.
- Do not assume that a nearby version is interchangeable. A client on one release can be rejected even when the difference appears minor.
Record the version in your server notes and in the instructions you send to friends. If you later update, plan the server, client profiles, and backup together instead of changing one machine first and troubleshooting a mixed-version group.
Java guidance
Java requirements depend on the Minecraft version. Fabric’s installation documentation recommends Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer. For older versions, use the Java release supported by that version and by the server software you selected; do not apply the Java 21 recommendation to every historical release automatically.
Confirm which Java executable your server actually starts with. A computer can have more than one Java installation, and a launcher profile can use a different runtime from a command prompt. The useful check is the runtime reported by the server process, not merely the version you remember installing.

Prepare the host machine
You can run the server on a computer at home or on a managed Minecraft host. The decision is operational rather than a requirement imposed by Fabulously Optimized: because the pack is client-sided, either arrangement can work when the server software supports the chosen Minecraft version and accepts the intended clients.
Self-hosting checklist
- Use a machine that can remain powered on for the hours your group plays.
- Install the Java runtime required by the selected Minecraft version.
- Keep the server files in a dedicated folder so worlds, configuration, logs, and backups are easy to identify.
- Allow the server application through the host firewall according to your operating system’s rules.
- If people outside your home network must connect, configure your router and public address using your network provider’s instructions. Test from a separate connection rather than assuming local connectivity proves internet access.
- Plan where backups will live. A backup stored only in the same folder as the live world is vulnerable to disk failure, accidental deletion, and corruption.
Managed hosting checklist
A managed host can remove operating-system maintenance, but it does not remove Minecraft version management. Before paying, verify the service’s current support for your exact Java Edition version, how it handles backups and restores, whether you receive console access, and whether its hardware allocation is adequate for your workload.
Use these questions when comparing providers:
- What monthly cost covers the allocated CPU and memory, and can those allocations change?
- How strong is the CPU’s single-thread performance, which is important for the main server tick?
- How much memory and storage are included, and are storage limits enforced?
- Are backups automatic, how many restore points are retained, and can you download a backup?
- Are player slots fixed, and does the slot limit match your intended group?
- Where are the data centers, and will their geographic latency suit your players?
- What DDoS protection and network controls are included?
- Can you run additional mods or plugins if you add them later?
- Do you have console access for stopping, starting, and reading logs?
- What are the cancellation and data-export terms?
These are evaluation criteria, not a guarantee that every host offers the same features. Check the provider’s current documentation and terms before committing.
Install and validate the ordinary Java server
The project documentation does not require a special “Fabulously Optimized server.” Start with the server software appropriate for your chosen Minecraft version and follow that software’s current installation instructions. Keep the server on the same version you recorded for the clients.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
- Create a clean server directory. Place the server program and its generated files in a folder dedicated to this world. Avoid mixing files from different Minecraft versions.
- Install or select the correct Java runtime. For Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer, Fabric recommends Java 21; verify the server process uses it.
- Start the server once. The first run normally creates the world and configuration files required by the server software. Read the console output for errors before inviting anyone.
- Apply the server’s required agreement and configuration steps. Use the instructions shipped with the server software and do not copy settings from an unrelated version.
- Start it again and watch the log. Wait until the console reports that the server is ready to accept connections. Stop it through the console when making backups or changing files.
- Test with a vanilla client first. This isolates ordinary server and network problems from client-side modpack issues. Connect from the same machine or local network, then test from the network your friends will use.
Once a plain client can join and play, the server side is doing what Fabulously Optimized expects. If a vanilla client cannot connect, fix the server version, Java runtime, firewall, router, or address before troubleshooting the modpack.
Install Fabulously Optimized for each player
Use the official launcher procedure for every computer that will run the optimized client. The exact release must correspond to the server’s Minecraft version.
- Install Minecraft Launcher. Sign in with the account that owns the Java Edition installation.
- Install Fabric Loader for the selected Minecraft version. Select the same version recorded for the server rather than the newest version shown by the installer.
- Download the desired Fabulously Optimized release. Confirm its Minecraft version before opening or copying any files.
- Open the Fabric installation folder from Minecraft Launcher. Use the launcher’s installation controls so the files go into the profile you intend to run.
- Copy the pack files into the Minecraft directory. If the operating system asks whether to replace existing files, follow the project’s installation directions and replace the files as instructed. Do not overwrite a valuable custom profile without first backing it up.
- Launch the Fabric profile. On the title screen, confirm that “Fabulously Optimized” appears in the lower-right corner. That label verifies that the intended profile loaded.
Alternative launchers
The project lists CurseForge App, Modrinth App, Prism Launcher, MultiMC, and the official Minecraft Launcher as supported launcher options. Choose one launcher per player, document the profile name and Minecraft version, and avoid maintaining several profiles with ambiguous names. A clear profile such as “FO – 1.20.6” is easier to select than a list of automatically generated entries.
Invite friends without forcing the pack
Because the pack is client-sided, friends do not necessarily need to install Fabulously Optimized to join. They do need a Minecraft Java client on the exact server version, and the server must allow vanilla clients. A player who uses the pack receives its client-side performance and graphics changes; a player who does not use it joins with the ordinary client behavior.

Do not describe the pack as a server-required mod. That wording causes players to install files on the wrong side and can make a compatible vanilla connection appear more complicated than it is.
How much RAM and hardware do you need?
There is no trustworthy one-number RAM recommendation for a “Fabulously Optimized server” in the project’s official guidance. Fabulously Optimized changes the client, not the server’s world simulation, so the server’s resource needs come from the Minecraft version, world activity, simulation distance, number of simultaneously active players, and any separate mods or plugins you add.
Measure the workload instead of guessing
- Start with the smallest machine that meets the server software’s requirements for your chosen version.
- Test during the busiest activity you expect: several players exploring, generating new terrain, fighting, and using farms at the same time.
- Watch the server console and operating-system resource monitor for sustained CPU saturation, memory pressure, disk waits, or network instability.
- Increase resources only after identifying the bottleneck. More memory cannot fix a CPU-limited tick rate, and a faster CPU cannot repair a failing disk or inadequate network connection.
- Repeat the test after adding plugins, server-side mods, datapacks, or a larger view or simulation distance. Those changes alter the workload independently of the client pack.
Player-count promises copied from unrelated servers are not a sizing method. Two worlds with the same number of connected people can have very different loads depending on exploration, redstone activity, entity counts, and world-generation work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Updates, backups, and safe maintenance
Handle every Minecraft or pack update as a coordinated maintenance event. The Fabulously Optimized update guidance warns: “Never downgrade to an older version, this could corrupt your worlds and settings!” That warning applies to the order of operations as well as to the files themselves.
A safe update sequence
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete backup of the world and the configuration files. Keep a copy outside the live server directory.
- Read the release notes for the target Minecraft version, Fabric Loader, and Fabulously Optimized release.
- Install the new server version in a separate test directory when possible. Do not overwrite the only working installation.
- Update one client profile and connect to a copy of the world. Check that the world opens, blocks and inventories appear correctly, and the server log contains no critical errors.
- Give players the exact version and launcher profile they should select.
- Upgrade the remaining clients and move the server to the new version only after the test succeeds.
Never use a downgrade as a quick fix for a failed update. Restore the pre-update backup or resolve the compatibility problem in a separate copy instead.

Keep release and test builds separate
The update documentation also advises installing alpha or beta builds separately from a release installation. Maintain separate folders and launcher profiles so an experimental build cannot silently replace the profile your group uses for its main world. Label test profiles with the Minecraft version and build channel.

The server rejects the connection for a version mismatch
Read the exact Minecraft version in the server startup log and compare it with the version selected in the client launcher. Re-select the matching Fabulously Optimized release and Fabric Loader. Do not solve a mismatch by downgrading the world; restore a backup or upgrade both sides deliberately.
A friend cannot connect, but you can
Test whether the problem is local to that player or to internet reachability. Confirm the friend is using Java Edition, the correct address, and the exact version. If local players can connect but an outside player cannot, inspect the host firewall, router forwarding, public address, and any managed-host network control. Use a separate network for the test so a local-only success does not hide an external access problem.
The optimized profile does not load
Launch the Fabric profile selected during installation and check for the “Fabulously Optimized” label in the lower-right corner. If it is missing, the launcher is using another profile or the pack files were copied into the wrong Minecraft directory. Reopen the installation folder from the launcher and repeat the documented copy step in a clean profile.
The server lags after adding the pack
Do not assume the client pack caused server lag. It is client-sided, so compare the server workload before and after the change. Check for increased exploration, simulation distance, new plugins or mods, entity-heavy farms, CPU saturation, memory pressure, and storage or network waits. Test with a vanilla client and the optimized client under the same activity; this separates a client rendering issue from a server tick issue.
An update damaged the world or settings
Stop experimenting on the only copy. Preserve the current files for diagnosis, then restore the backup made before the update in a separate directory. Check that the server and every client use the intended version, and keep alpha or beta profiles separate from the release installation.
A practical operating checklist
- Server and clients: exact same Minecraft version.
- Java: runtime appropriate to that version; Java 21 is Fabric’s recommendation for 1.20.5 and newer.
- Server: ordinary compatible Java server that accepts vanilla clients.
- Clients: Fabric Loader plus the matching Fabulously Optimized release, installed through a supported launcher.
- Validation: test with vanilla first, then verify the optimized profile label.
- Capacity: size from measured CPU, memory, storage, network, simulation distance, player activity, and added server software.
- Maintenance: back up before every update and never downgrade an existing installation.
- Testing: keep experimental alpha or beta builds separate from the release profile.
The bottom line
Host Fabulously Optimized as a client enhancement, not as a special server package. Run a normal Minecraft Java server on the version your group has chosen, install the matching Fabric-based pack on the players’ computers, and allow vanilla clients if you want friends to join without it. Version matching, Java compatibility, measured capacity planning, and disciplined backups matter far more than installing the pack on the server.
