This is not one single, reliably diagnosed fault. The authentication handshake can fail on the game server, Steam, your account session, or the local Windows installation. The steps below isolate those possibilities in the safest order. They are community workarounds, not a guaranteed official fix.

What the DayZ WaitAuthPlayerLoginState error means
WaitAuthPlayerLoginState is the label used when DayZ is waiting for the authentication state that should allow a server connection to complete. The usual numeric code is 0x00040031; one Bohemia Interactive tracker entry uses the typo-like title 0x0004031 for what appears to be the same issue. In practical terms, the game reaches the login stage but never receives a successful response.
Players commonly report that they cannot connect to any server, although a server-specific problem can produce a similar symptom. Authentication is a chain rather than a single switch: Steam must have a valid online session, the DayZ client and BattlEye-related components must be intact, the selected server must be reachable, and any required mod files must match. A failure at any point can leave the same waiting message on screen.

Bohemia Interactive’s public tracker entries for this code are the most authoritative places to check for a current incident or developer update: feedback.bistudio.com/T163465 and feedback.bistudio.com/T170994. Neither entry documents a confirmed, universal client-side cure, so be cautious about guides that promise one click will permanently solve every case.
First determine whether the problem is local or server-side
Do this short triage before deleting files. It prevents you from resetting a healthy installation when the failing component is outside your PC.

Check the server you are joining
Try two or three servers in different regions, including an unmodded official server if one is available. If only one community server fails while others connect, its authentication service, whitelist, name policy, or mod set is the likely boundary. Contact that server’s administrators rather than repeatedly reinstalling DayZ.
Look for maintenance or a broad outage
Check the DayZ server list, the official channels used by the server operator, and the Bohemia Interactive tracker links above. A service can be unavailable without a prominent outage announcement, and a local repair cannot bring a server back online. Record the time, server name and region so you can compare later.
Test the scope of the failure
“Cannot connect to any server” points more toward Steam, the account session, the client, or a regional network path than toward one individual server. If the same account works on another computer or from another country, as one tracker report describes, that is evidence for a network- or account-specific cause rather than proof that your DayZ files are damaged.

- Leave the server and close DayZ.
- Close the DayZ launcher. Check the Windows notification area and Task Manager for a remaining DayZ or launcher process before continuing.
- In Steam, wait for any cloud-synchronization message to finish, then choose Steam > Exit. Reopen Steam from the Start menu.
- Confirm Steam is signed in and online, start the DayZ launcher again, and connect to a server.
Several forum users say a clean Steam-and-launcher restart restored access; one anecdotal post claimed success in “about 80%” of first attempts. That is a single user’s experience, not a measured success rate, so treat it as a quick reset rather than a statistic or guarantee.
2. Make sure Steam is not in Offline Mode
Open Steam’s main menu and check whether it offers Go Online. If it does, Steam is currently offline; select it and allow the client to reconnect. A browser connection does not prove that Steam’s game session is authenticated. If Steam repeatedly falls back to offline mode, resolve that connection or account issue before launching DayZ again.
3. Start Discord with administrator rights and disable its overlay
Overlay hooks are a frequently reported source of conflicts during the login handoff. Test them without changing your game installation:
- Close DayZ and Discord completely.
- Right-click the Discord shortcut and select Run as administrator. Start Discord before starting DayZ.
- In Discord, open User Settings > Game Overlay and turn off Enable in-game overlay.
- Launch DayZ and test the connection. If you use another graphics-card or recording overlay, disable that overlay for the test as well.
Running Discord elevated is a workaround reported by support guides and players, not an indication that Discord is required for DayZ. If the error disappears only when the overlay is disabled, leave it off for DayZ or use a per-game exclusion.

Repair the DayZ installation
Verify files through Steam
An interrupted update or damaged download can prevent the client from completing authentication. Steam can compare the installed files with its manifest and redownload missing data.
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click DayZ and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam after verification, open the launcher, and test an unmodded server first.
Verification may replace files and may trigger another download. It does not normally remove your character’s server-side progress, but keep custom launch options and local configuration notes because a repair can alter files you have manually changed.
Refresh local profile and cache data
If verification reports no problem but every server still stops at authentication, stale local data is a reasonable next test. This step can remove graphics settings, launcher preferences, key bindings and other local configuration, so back up before deleting anything.
- Exit DayZ, its launcher and Steam.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%AppData%, and press Enter. Look for folders namedDayZ,DayZ LauncherorBohemia_Interactive. - Copy those folders to a dated backup location outside AppData.
- Rename the original folders (for example, add
.old) instead of immediately deleting them. Renaming lets you restore them if the test makes the problem worse. - Start Steam and DayZ. The game will create fresh local data. Test the connection before restoring any old files.
Some players instead remove a DayZ player-profile file. That has the same basic risk: local preferences can be lost, and an incorrectly chosen file can erase more than intended. If a clean profile fixes the error, restore only individual settings after testing, not the entire old folder at once.
Resolve Steam Cloud conflicts carefully
A Steam Cloud conflict can put an older local or cloud state back in place every time the game starts. One player associated the authentication error with choosing the older cloud save when Steam displayed a conflict dialog.

- If Steam presents a conflict, read the timestamps and identify which copy is newer. Do not click through automatically.
- Choose the alternative copy on the next test if the one previously selected produced the error.
- If you need to experiment, first copy the local DayZ folders described above so you can recover settings.
The dialog’s choices vary with the files involved. Cloud data is not a universal repair, and selecting the wrong state can overwrite newer local settings. If no conflict appears, do not force a deletion of cloud data merely because this workaround helped another player.
Reset the Steam session and the PC
Long-running Steam sessions can retain an invalid authentication token. A Bohemia Interactive feedback report describes a user for whom signing out and restarting resolved the problem.
- In Steam, choose Steam > Change Account or use the account menu to sign out.
- Exit Steam completely, including its notification-area process.
- Restart Windows rather than simply waking it from sleep.
- Open Steam, sign in again, wait for the library and cloud status to settle, then launch DayZ.
This costs little and does not remove game files. If the error returns immediately after every fresh sign-in, note that pattern for the tracker or your network administrator; it suggests a session, account or service-side issue rather than a one-time stale token.
Fixes for modded servers
Mods add another authentication dependency. A server can reject a client whose workshop files are incomplete, outdated or different from the server’s required versions.
Reinstall the affected mods
- In the DayZ launcher, review the server’s required mod list.
- Close DayZ and the launcher.
- In Steam Workshop, unsubscribe from the affected DayZ mods, wait for Steam to remove them, then subscribe again.
- Allow every download to finish before opening the launcher.
- Join the same server with only its listed required mods enabled.
If the server connects without mods but not with them, the server operator needs to confirm the current collection and load order. Do not delete the entire Steam Workshop directory unless an administrator specifically instructs you; that creates a large redownload and can obscure which mod caused the mismatch.

Try a plain in-game name
Some players report that servers rejected the generic name survivor. Change the player name in the DayZ launcher to a simple, unique name using ordinary letters and numbers, then retry. This is a server-specific workaround with limited evidence, so revert to your preferred name if it makes no difference.
When the cause is outside the client
Account- or region-specific failures
If your account fails on every server but another account works on the same PC, the problem may be tied to the account session or a server-side identity check. Conversely, if your account works on another computer or another country’s connection, compare the two networks rather than repeatedly reinstalling DayZ.

Record whether the result changes, but do not treat a temporary success as proof that a particular network device is permanently at fault. A router restart, restrictive firewall rule, DNS failure or regional routing problem can all change independently.
Server-side authentication problems
When every player is rejected from one server, or administrators report login errors at the same time, only the operator or Bohemia Interactive can correct the service. Send the operator your exact error text, code, server name, region and the time of the attempt. Avoid deleting local data while the server is known to be unavailable.

Preventing a repeat after you regain access
- Let Steam finish cloud synchronization before shutting down or launching DayZ on another computer.
- Keep Steam online when starting DayZ; avoid switching between offline and online modes during an update.
- Update workshop mods as a complete set and wait for downloads to finish before joining a server.
- Keep the Discord and graphics overlays disabled for DayZ if they were involved in the failure.
- Before clearing AppData or choosing a Steam Cloud state, keep a dated backup of the local DayZ folders.
- Save the server’s name, region and mod list when an error occurs so you can tell a server outage from a local regression.
Bottom line
For most players, the sensible sequence is: check server status and a second server, restart Steam and the launcher, confirm Steam is online, disable overlays, verify DayZ files, then sign out and restart Windows. Only after those low-risk tests should you rebuild AppData, choose a different Steam Cloud copy or reinstall mods—and each of those steps requires a backup or a clear understanding of what it resets.
