For a quick local match, start a listen server. For a server that remains online after you leave, install the GoldSrc Half-Life Dedicated Server (HLDS) with the cstrike mod. You can run HLDS on a spare Windows or Linux machine, or rent a VPS or managed game server. Steam Support documents HLDS player capacity from 1 to 32 and uses UDP port 27015 by default. Public home hosting also requires a stable internal address, router forwarding, firewall rules, updates and ongoing administration.
This guide explains each route, gives a current SteamCMD installation command, shows the first launch and configuration choices, and helps you decide whether home hosting or rented capacity fits your players.

Choose the right way to host
The hosting method determines how much control you have, how long the server stays available and who is responsible for networking.
| Route | Best for | Persistence | Your responsibilities | Cost model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-game listen server | One-off matches or a small LAN | Ends when the host leaves or closes the game | Start the match and share the local connection; little server administration | Uses equipment you already own |
| Self-hosted HLDS | Operators who want complete control over files, maps and plugins | Runs while the host machine and network remain online | Install and update HLDS, secure the machine, configure the firewall, forward the router port and maintain the server | Existing hardware and internet connection; no general current price is established by the cited guides |
| VPS or managed game-server service | A persistent public server without keeping a home PC online | Designed to run independently of your game session | Choose a suitable location and plan; you may still manage maps, mods and updates | Recurring or usage-based rental charge; the cited sources do not establish a general current price comparison |
Use a listen server for a small LAN
Steam describes a listen server as suitable for small LAN games and says it is not intended to be a public server. It is the fastest choice when everyone is on the same local network and the session can end when the host stops playing. It avoids installing a separate HLDS process, but it is tied to the host’s game session and computer.
#1 Best Overall
- Single-elimination, team-based online shooter
- Completely overhauled with better graphics, new characters, items, and environments
- Package includes Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Day of Defeat: Source
- Real-world physics adds depth the gameplay
- Internet connection required for online play
Use dedicated HLDS for a persistent server
A dedicated server runs the GoldSrc Half-Life server separately from the game client. It can remain online while the operator is not playing, making it the appropriate design for a public community server or a private server that friends can revisit. You control the server files, map rotation and configuration, but you also maintain the operating system, network access and security.
Rent capacity when administration is the problem
A VPS gives you a remote machine to administer, while a managed game-server panel may provide a prepared installation and browser controls. Renting avoids running HLDS on your own computer and can provide a data-center location closer to your players. Compare location and expected ping, included backups and support, player capacity, configuration access, plugin support, cancellation terms and whether billing is hourly or recurring. A guide updated September 22, 2026 describes hourly deployment as one service model; it is an example, not a universal price or performance guarantee.
Recommended Free Tools
What you need before installing HLDS
- A Windows or Linux machine that can remain powered on, or a rented VPS/managed server.
- Enough storage for the server files, maps and logs. One current Linux walkthrough recommends about 2 GB of free disk; treat that as the walkthrough’s recommendation, not a universal hardware minimum.
- For Linux, a Debian or Ubuntu installation, a dedicated non-root service account and 32-bit compatibility libraries, as specified by the current Linux guide.
- SteamCMD, the command-line Steam content installer.
- A server name, initial map, maximum player count (Steam’s documented range is 1–32), RCON password and, for a private server, an optional player password.
- For internet play from home, router access for port forwarding, a stable internal address for the server and permission to create firewall rules.
HLDS does not require games to be registered to the server account. Steam Support states: “You do not need to register any games to your server account in order to host games.” See Steam’s Half-Life Dedicated Server setup.
Install the Counter-Strike 1.6 dedicated server on Linux
The following sequence follows the Linux route documented by Nexaplay. Distribution packages and Valve files can change, so confirm package names and paths on the target Debian or Ubuntu release.
1. Create a non-root service account
Run the server under a dedicated account rather than an administrator account. This limits the damage a compromised plugin or service process could cause. Create the account, give it ownership of the HLDS directory and perform the remaining installation as that user.
2. Install SteamCMD and 32-bit compatibility
Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s current instructions and add the 32-bit compatibility libraries required by the SteamCMD and GoldSrc binaries. The exact package names differ between releases; use the packages documented for your selected Debian or Ubuntu version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Download HLDS with the Counter-Strike mod
From the SteamCMD directory, the cited walkthrough uses this command:

- Experience the original version of the popular online action game
- Counter-Strike; Counter-Strike: Condition Zero; Official Counter-Strike Bot
- Complete over a dozen tactical missions in the Tour of Duty campaign
- Simulate multiplayer games offline with bots or online with bots and humans
- 3 single-player gaming modes; extended award-winning multiplayer experience
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ../hlds +login anonymous +app_set_config 90 mod cstrike +app_update 90 validate +quit
App 90 is the Half-Life Dedicated Server and cstrike selects Counter-Strike. If the download stops before completion, the guide says to repeat the update command. It also documents a possible steamclient.so location fix; treat that as a guide-specific remedy and check the current path and distribution libraries if you see that error.
4. Start HLDS in console mode
After installation, change to the HLDS directory and launch the server. Nexaplay’s example is:
./hlds_run -game cstrike -console -usercon +ip 0.0.0.0 +port 27015 +maxplayers 24 +map de_dust2
This example binds to all local interfaces, uses port 27015, allows 24 players and starts on de_dust2. Change the map and capacity to suit your group. The documented Steam range is 1–32 players; do not assume that every mod or hosting panel supports every value identically.

For a persistent installation, run HLDS under a service manager or terminal multiplexer and arrange automatic restart after a crash or planned reboot. The cited guides establish the installation and launch commands but do not prescribe one universal service-manager file, so follow the service-manager documentation for your Linux distribution and test a clean stop and restart before inviting players.
Install on Windows or use a hosting panel
HLDS is also suitable for a spare Windows machine. The practical sequence is the same: install SteamCMD, download app 90 with the cstrike mod, launch hlds.exe or the supplied launcher with the selected map, port and player count, then permit the process through Windows Firewall. A hosting panel may expose the same options as form fields instead of shell arguments. Check the panel’s supported game build, file access, backup policy and mod support before paying; the cited guides do not establish one provider’s current availability or price.
Configure the server before anyone connects
Place persistent settings in cstrike/server.cfg. Steam’s setup material and the current walkthroughs identify these decisions as the essentials.
Server identity and gameplay
- Server name: Use a recognizable name that tells players whether the server is private, public, modded or region-specific.
- Map and map cycle: Set the first map at launch and define the rotation you want. Steam’s graphical-server documentation also lists map-cycle controls.
- Maximum players: Select a value from 1 to 32, considering available CPU, bandwidth and the size of your group rather than choosing 32 automatically.
- LAN or internet mode: A LAN-only setting prevents ordinary public internet access. Use internet mode for an internet server and verify that the launch configuration and server settings agree.
- RCON password: Set a long, unique administrator password. Never post it in chat, a public configuration repository or a support screenshot.
- Player password: Add one for a friends-only server and give it only to the intended players.
Steam’s official setup page is the reference for the available server options: Setting up a Steam Half-Life Dedicated Server.

Keep credentials separate
Use a different secret for RCON and the player join password. A player password is shared with clients; the RCON credential grants administrative control. Change RCON immediately if it has been disclosed, and remove old copies from shell history or shared configuration files where practical.
Open the server to your LAN or the internet
LAN access
On a home network, players normally connect to the server’s private address. Give the server machine a stable internal address, either by reserving its address in the router or configuring a suitable static address. This prevents the address from changing and avoids having to rediscover the server for every match.
Home internet access
- Assign or reserve a stable internal address for the server computer.
- Choose the launch port. Steam lists UDP 27015 as the default; use a different port only when your configuration requires it.
- Create a router port-forwarding rule from the selected external port to the server’s internal address and port.
- Permit the same traffic in the operating system firewall. A current Linux walkthrough describes UDP for game traffic and TCP for RCON on the same numbered port; validate the exact protocol required by your server build, RCON configuration and firewall instead of copying a rule blindly.
- Start HLDS, then test from a different network, such as a mobile connection. A test from inside the same LAN can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.
Steam’s router instructions explain the forwarding rule and recommend a static internal IP: Configuring a Router for use with a Half-Life or Source Dedicated Server.
Your external address can change on a residential connection. If it does, return players will need the new address unless you arrange a supported hostname service. The cited setup pages do not establish a particular dynamic-DNS provider, so check your router and internet provider documentation.
Do not expose more than necessary
- Forward only the selected server port and any separately required administration port.
- Keep the operating system, SteamCMD and server files updated.
- Restrict RCON access where your firewall supports source restrictions.
- Inspect logs after installing plugins or opening the server publicly.
- Back up
server.cfg, map lists and plugin configuration, but do not back up passwords into a publicly accessible location.
Connect and verify the first launch
- Start HLDS and wait for the console to report that the map has loaded without errors.
- From a client on the same LAN, connect using the server’s internal address and port.
- Check the displayed name, map, player limit and password behavior.
- Test RCON with the separate administrator credential from a trusted client.
- Ask a player outside the LAN to connect using the public address and port.
- Watch the server console and firewall logs while that player joins, changes map and leaves.
If LAN clients connect but an outside client cannot, the problem is usually the router rule, firewall, carrier-grade NAT or an incorrect public address rather than the map itself. If nobody can connect locally, verify that HLDS is running, the selected port matches the client command and the process is listening on the intended interface.
Choose VPS or managed hosting deliberately
Rented capacity reduces the need to keep a home computer online, but it does not remove every decision. Before ordering, ask:
- Where is the machine located, and is that location close enough to the players for acceptable ping?
- Is Counter-Strike 1.6/HLDS currently available on the plan and operating system you want?
- Are backups, DDoS controls, support and restoration included or charged separately?
- Can you edit HLDS files, upload maps and install compatible plugins?
- Is the player limit enforced by the plan or adjustable?
- Is billing hourly, monthly or usage-based, and what are the cancellation and data-retention terms?
- Who applies operating-system and server updates?
Managed panels are convenient when you prefer forms and restart buttons; a VPS offers more direct shell and file control but leaves administration with you. Neither choice guarantees a particular ping: the cited pages provide no comparative latency measurements.

Add plugins only when you have a specific purpose
A vanilla HLDS server is enough for standard Counter-Strike 1.6. The Nexaplay walkthrough describes Metamod-P as a plugin loader and AMX Mod X as an optional framework, with Reunion included in that particular configuration. These additions are not required to host a server.
Install a plugin only after checking that it supports your HLDS build and that its source and maintenance status are trustworthy. Make a backup first, add one change at a time, restart the server and test map changes, joining, RCON and shutdown. A plugin can introduce extra configuration, compatibility problems and update work; remove the last addition if crashes or connection failures begin immediately afterward.
Troubleshoot common failures
SteamCMD finishes early or cannot update
Repeat app_update 90 validate as the Linux guide recommends. Check free disk space, permissions for the non-root service account, network access and 32-bit libraries. If an error mentions steamclient.so, compare the file location with the walkthrough’s documented fix and with the library paths on your distribution.
The server starts, then exits
Run the launcher in the foreground and read the last console lines. Confirm that the cstrike directory exists, the map name is valid and the selected port is not already used. Temporarily remove the newest plugin or custom map to isolate an incompatibility.
Players on the LAN cannot join
Confirm the server’s private address, that HLDS is bound to the correct interface, and that the operating-system firewall permits the selected traffic. Use the internal address for LAN testing; do not test a port-forwarded public address from a network whose router lacks hairpin NAT support.
Internet players cannot join
Recheck the external address, port-forward destination, firewall rule and whether the server is set to LAN-only. Confirm the protocol: Steam documents UDP 27015 as the default game port, while the Linux guide separately discusses TCP for RCON. Some residential connections use carrier-grade NAT and do not provide a forwardable public IPv4 address; in that case, ask the internet provider about a public address or move the server to a VPS or managed service.
RCON does not work
Verify the RCON password in server.cfg, the administration port and firewall rules. Do not assume that an RCON TCP rule is required on every setup without checking the server’s actual behavior; the cited Linux guide describes TCP on the same port, so validate it against your build and panel.
