The platform’s website also says alt:V is in the process of a structured shutdown, so existing operators should size hardware for the remaining operating period while anyone starting a new project checks the official shutdown and migration announcement before signing a long contract.

The same documentation describes observed “mid-tier” servers handling roughly 300–600 players at peak with less than 1.25 GB of RAM in use, around eight cores, a 3.7 GHz CPU and 6–42% CPU utilization. It does not provide a measurement date or methodology, so treat those figures as observations reported by the documentation, not as a promise that your installation will use the same resources. The documentation also cautions: “This will always be subject to change based on upcoming features or performance changes.”

Why player count is only one sizing variable
Two servers with the same number of connected players can have very different requirements. A lightly customized server may spend little time in scripts, while a heavily scripted role-play environment can put sustained load on the CPU, memory and database.

Scripts and resources
Custom resources add JavaScript execution, event handling, asset loading and background tasks. Poorly optimized loops or frequent database queries can create CPU spikes even when the player count is modest. Include the resources you plan to run in your capacity estimate instead of sizing from the player limit alone.
Database workload
Character data, inventories, permissions, economy records and logs may run on the same host. The 4 GB baseline does not reserve all memory for the alt:V process; database services and the operating system need their own headroom. If the database is on the same machine, leave enough memory for its cache and for temporary query work.
Peak rather than average demand
Plan for your busiest concurrent period, not the quietest hours. Restarts, scheduled jobs, world events and mass joins can create short-lived peaks. Monitoring should show CPU utilization, memory pressure, disk space and database latency during those periods so you can distinguish a capacity problem from a faulty script.

When comparing machines, start with the processor’s sustained clock speed and then check how many physical or allocated cores remain available after the operating system and other services are accounted for. A four-core, 3.2 GHz baseline may be adequate for the documented target, but a host running a database, voice service, monitoring agents and several resource-heavy scripts benefits from additional capacity.

- Prioritize consistent single-thread performance: simulation and script work can be sensitive to per-core speed, so a high advertised boost that cannot be sustained under load is less useful than a stable clock.
- Reserve cores for shared services: do not assume every listed core is available to alt:V if the database, web panel or backup process runs on the same machine.
- Watch utilization over time: brief spikes are different from a CPU that remains near saturation during normal play. Sustained saturation can produce delayed events and poor tick performance.
- Leave upgrade room: configurable CPU resources or an easy move to a larger instance are valuable when scripts and the community grow.
These are practical purchasing criteria derived from the documented requirements, not a vendor benchmark. No particular processor model is required by the official specification.
RAM planning beyond the 4 GB baseline
Allocate the published 4 GB as the starting point for the server process, then add memory for everything else that shares the host. A practical budget should account for:
- the operating system and background services;
- the database engine and its cache;
- custom scripts and resource data;
- monitoring, administration panels and log processing;
- temporary files, updates and backup operations.
Do not treat unused RAM as a problem by itself; treat swapping, out-of-memory events and rising latency as warning signs. If the host starts swapping during peak activity, reducing script load or moving the database may help, but adding memory is the durable fix when the workload is legitimate.

alt:V does not publish one universal disk number because the requirement depends on your database and scripts. Count the server binaries, resources, downloaded assets, logs, database files, crash dumps and at least one recovery copy when estimating capacity.

Capacity checklist
- Measure the current installation rather than guessing from the executable size.
- Reserve room for updates and temporary extraction files.
- Set log-retention limits so a busy server cannot fill the volume.
- Keep backups on separate storage; a second folder on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
Fast solid-state storage can reduce update and database wait times, but the documentation does not mandate a particular drive type. Reliability, available space and backup strategy matter more than a nominal interface speed.
Configuration details that affect deployment
The configuration reference uses server.toml. Its default port is 7788, and the port can be changed. When no content-delivery network is used, the specifications page says the default port uses both TCP and UDP; with a CDN, it says only UDP is used. Open the required protocol and port in the host firewall and any upstream security group.
Processing threads
The configuration documentation advises keeping configured processing threads within the machine’s hardware-thread count. Its example allocates more threads to sync sending than to sync receiving. Treat that as a configuration guideline, not a universal performance formula: the correct values depend on the available hardware and the resources you run.
Player capacity
The configuration allows you to set player capacity. Set a limit that matches tested resources and monitoring data rather than selecting a large number simply because the host has spare memory.

Operating-system and software prerequisites
The official JavaScript server setup documentation lists Windows 10 or later and Linux as supported operating-system choices. It also lists these prerequisites:
- the latest Node.js;
- a code editor;
- basic command-prompt knowledge;
- the latest Visual C++ Redistributable;
libatomic1on Linux.
These are setup requirements, separate from the CPU and RAM sizing figures. Verify that your chosen operating-system image is supported and patched before exposing the server to the internet.
Basic installation and first-run sequence
- Choose the operating system: use Windows 10 or later, or a supported Linux distribution, and apply current security updates.
- Install prerequisites: install the latest Node.js, a code editor and the Visual C++ Redistributable. On Linux, install
libatomic1through the distribution’s package manager. - Download the server files: place them in a dedicated directory with permissions that allow the service account to read files and write logs and data.
- Create
server.toml: define the server settings, player capacity and processing-thread values. Keep thread counts within the host’s hardware-thread count. - Set networking: use port
7788unless you have a reason to change it, then allow the selected TCP/UDP combination through local and provider firewalls according to whether a CDN is used. - Start in a test environment: connect with a small number of players, exercise your heaviest resources and watch CPU, RAM, disk and database metrics.
- Raise the limit gradually: increase player capacity only after peak-load tests show stable performance and adequate memory headroom.
How to compare hosting options
There is no official host recommendation or component model in the requirements. Compare offers using the resources you can actually use, not the headline number on a plan page.

Prices are not specified by the official requirements, so a cheap plan cannot be judged without its actual CPU allocation, usable memory, storage policy and migration terms.
Troubleshooting resource problems
CPU remains high
- Check which resource or database query coincides with the spike.
- Look for frequent loops, excessive polling and synchronous work.
- Compare normal and peak player periods before changing the player limit.
- Move unrelated services off the host or increase CPU capacity if the workload is legitimate.
Memory keeps climbing
- Check whether the database, logs or a resource is retaining data.
- Confirm the host is not swapping.
- Restarting can hide a leak but does not fix it; identify and update or replace the offending resource.
- Add RAM only after measuring which process consumes it.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm the configured port in
server.toml. - Check host and provider firewalls for the required TCP and UDP rules.
- Verify the CDN mode, because the documented protocol use changes when a CDN is enabled.
- Confirm that the server process is listening on the intended network interface.
Disk fills unexpectedly
- Inspect logs, database growth, crash dumps and backup jobs.
- Apply retention limits and move backups to separate storage.
- Expand the volume before it reaches 100%, then investigate the source of growth.
What the structured shutdown means for hosting decisions
The alt:V website currently displays a notice saying the platform is “in the process of a structured shutdown” and directs readers to an announcement for key dates and migration information. The exact shutdown and migration dates were not available in the retrieved official page content, so do not assume a particular deadline.
For existing operators
The published hardware figures remain useful for estimating short-term capacity while your server is online. Keep monitoring enabled, avoid unnecessary overprovisioning and maintain exportable backups of player and database data so you can migrate if an approved path is announced.
For a new project
Check the official shutdown and migration announcement before purchasing hardware or committing to a long hosting term. A flexible, short contract and portable data are safer choices than a large upfront commitment while the platform’s future availability is changing.
Practical sizing workflow
- Define the highest concurrent player count you actually need.
- List every script, resource, database and co-hosted service.
- Use the official four-core, 3.2 GHz and 4 GB-plus-overhead baseline as the starting envelope for a server above 100 players.
- Run a controlled load test with representative resources and peak-like activity.
- Record CPU, memory, disk and database metrics, including short spikes.
- Add headroom, set a conservative player limit and document the configuration.
- Re-test after major resource, database or platform changes.
That process turns a generic specification into a capacity decision based on your actual workload, while keeping the investment proportionate to the platform’s remaining operating period.
