To hide every zero on one worksheet in Excel for Mac, open Excel > Preferences > View and clear Zero values under Show in workbook. To hide zeros in selected cells only, apply the custom number format 0;-0;;@. Both methods change what Excel displays; the numbers themselves stay in the cells. Which one you need depends on whether the zeros are typed values or results returned by formulas.
Choose the right method first
Excel for Mac offers three practical approaches and one setting that looks relevant but does less than you might expect. The table below compares them by scope and by what happens to the value.

| Goal | Method | Scope and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hide every zero on a worksheet | Excel > Preferences > View, then clear Zero values under Show in workbook | Applies to the worksheet as a whole. Simplest option when every zero on that sheet should disappear. |
| Hide zeros in chosen cells only | Custom number format 0;-0;;@ |
Applies only to the cells you select. Hidden zeros remain visible in the formula bar and are not printed. Decimal values display rounded to whole numbers unless you change the format (see below). |
| Hide a zero returned by a formula, keeping the numeric result | Conditional formatting: cell value equal to 0 with a white font | Display only. The value is still there, and white text can be visible if the cell is filled with color or if someone selects it. |
| Show a blank or dash instead of a zero result | An IF formula that returns "" or "-" for the zero case |
Changes the result to text. SUM and similar functions ignore text, but arithmetic that refers to the cell directly returns #VALUE!. |
| Control zeros in a PivotTable | PivotTable Options > Display | Microsoft’s Mac article documents empty-cell and error display options in this section. It does not document a dedicated numeric-zero hiding setting here. |
Hide all zeros on a worksheet
Use this method when the whole sheet should show no zeros. It is a view setting, so it does not change any formula or value.

Hide zeros in selected cells with a custom format
If only part of a sheet should hide zeros, a custom number format is the better tool, because it applies only to the cells you format.
- Select the cells you want to format.
- On the Home tab, in the Number group, open the Number Format menu and choose Custom. You can also press Command+1 and select Custom on the Number tab of Format Cells.
- In the Type box, enter
0;-0;;@. - Click OK.
A custom format has up to four sections separated by semicolons. They apply, in order, to positive numbers, negative numbers, zero, and text. In 0;-0;;@, the third section is empty, so zeros display as nothing. The fourth section, @, keeps text entries visible. If a formatted cell later holds a nonzero number, it displays normally.

Watch for rounding in decimal values
The positive section 0 shows whole numbers only, so a value of 2.4 displays as 2. For two decimal places, use 0.00;-0.00;;@ instead. The format changes only the display, so calculations still use the full value.

Formula results need a different approach, because a number format on a formula cell still works, but you may want the formula itself to return something other than zero.

Option 1: Keep the number and hide it with conditional formatting
- Select the formula cells.
- On the Home tab, choose Conditional Formatting > Highlight Cells Rules > Equal To.
- Enter
0in the value box. - Open the format list, choose Custom Format, and set the font color to white.
The cell still holds a zero, so totals and other formulas work unchanged. The trade-off is that the text is hidden only by color. If the worksheet has a colored fill, or the cell is selected, the figure can still be read, and a printed copy may show a faint or blank area depending on the printer.
Option 2: Return a dash or blank from the formula
Wrap the calculation in an IF test. For example, if column D multiplies B and C, the formula in D2 could be:

=IF(B2*C2=0,"-",B2*C2)
To show a blank instead, use "" in place of "-". Use this approach when the displayed text matters more than keeping a numeric zero. Be aware that a later formula such as =D2*2 returns #VALUE! when D2 holds a dash, while SUM(D2:D20) simply skips it. Check downstream formulas before you switch a column to text.
What hiding does not change
Microsoft’s support page on custom number formats states: “Custom number formats affect only the way a number is displayed and do not affect the underlying value of the number.” In practice, a zero hidden by the worksheet setting or by the 0;-0;;@ format still counts in totals, averages, and references, and it is still visible when you click the cell and read the formula bar. Only the IF method changes the value itself.

Versions and availability
The Microsoft support article for Excel for Mac that covers these steps lists Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac, Excel 2024 for Mac, and Excel 2021 for Mac. The page does not show a publication date, so menu names may change in later builds. Earlier versions are not covered by that list, and their menus may differ. The instructions are from Microsoft’s US English support pages, and no region-specific limits are stated there.
If the menu path does not match your screen, search Excel’s Help for “zero values” or “custom number format”, which will lead you to the same settings in your build.
