To appear offline on your phone, turn off Active Status in Messenger: open Chats, tap your profile picture, choose Active Status, switch it off, and confirm Turn Off. These steps are documented for Messenger on Android and iPhone/iPad; the exact current menu path in the Facebook app is not verified here.
How do I show offline on Facebook mobile?
If you use Messenger, turn off Active Status there. Hithawathi’s guide, last updated January 1, 2025, gives these steps for Android and iPhone/iPad:

- Open Messenger and go to Chats.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-left corner.
- Tap Active Status.
- Switch the Active Status toggle off.
- Confirm by tapping Turn Off.
Follow Hithawathi’s Messenger Active Status guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes this also hide you in the Facebook app?
The documented instructions above are for Messenger, which is a separate app experience. Meta’s Active Status help page could not be checked, so a current Facebook-app menu path cannot be confirmed. If you use Facebook as well as Messenger, check the places where you are signed in and look for Active Status controls. A 2020 India Today guide advises checking other Facebook or Messenger locations, but treat this as a prudent cross-check rather than a guarantee about how current settings synchronize.

What turning off Active Status changes
Active Status controls whether your presence is shown as active or recently active. It is distinct from message notifications and from Facebook’s broader privacy controls, such as audience and visibility settings. Turning it off is not the same as blocking messages or deactivating your account.
