How do I make my Venmo payments private?
- Open the Venmo app and tap Me.
- Tap the Settings gear, then tap Privacy.
- Under the payment privacy options, select Private.
Venmo offers Public, Friends, and Private payment settings. This changes the default for future payments. Venmo says it uses the more restrictive privacy setting selected by the two payment partners, so the other person’s selection can affect the payment’s visibility too. What do Venmo’s payment privacy settings mean?

Venmo’s Teen Account safety page says a Public transaction may be visible to anyone on the internet. It describes Private activity for Teen Accounts as appearing only in the personal transaction feeds of the parties, and in specified Teen Account situations, a parent or guardian. How do I change the privacy of one Venmo payment?
When creating a payment, use its privacy control to choose the audience you want. For a payment you have already sent, open that payment and change its privacy there. Venmo allows a past payment to be made more private than its original setting; it does not allow you to make it less private afterward. The other payment partner’s more restrictive selection also applies.

How do I hide past Venmo transactions?
Open Me > Settings > Privacy and use the option to hide all past transactions. Venmo confirms that this control is available in the Privacy menu. The help guidance does not say that hiding past transactions deletes transaction records or conceals the payment from the other participant, so do not treat it as a way to erase a payment.
Does hiding transactions hide my friends list or block someone?
No. Friends-list visibility is a separate control: go to Me > Settings > Privacy > Friends List to manage it. Venmo’s Adding & Removing Friends help page covers that setting.

Blocking is also separate and is not a way to retroactively hide a payment. Venmo says blocked users cannot view or comment on each other’s future payments and cannot find or interact with each other’s profiles. See Venmo’s instructions for blocking another user.
