You can keep notifications arriving on a Windows 11 PC while stopping their text, sender and details from showing on the lock screen. The control is a per-app switch named Hide content when notifications are on lock screen, and it lives in Settings under System > Notifications, not in the lock-screen personalization page.
Turn on content hiding for one app
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Select System, then select Notifications.
- Under Notifications from apps and other senders, select the app whose details you want to conceal.
- Turn on Hide content when notifications are on lock screen.
Microsoft describes this option as a way to prevent sensitive notifications from showing on the lock screen (Microsoft Support, “Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows”). The setting applies to the app you selected. Repeat the steps for every other app that handles sensitive messages, such as email, chat or banking tools.

Why the setting is not on the lock-screen page
Many readers look first under Personalization > Lock screen. That page controls the background and lock-screen widgets. Notification content hiding is handled by the notification settings, so changes made there will not affect what appears on the lock screen.

What each notification control changes
Hiding lock-screen content is only one of several per-app controls. Each one affects a different part of the experience:

If you only want privacy on a locked screen, change the lock-screen switch and leave the others alone. Turning off notifications for an app removes its alerts everywhere, so you may miss messages you need.

How Do Not Disturb differs
Do Not Disturb is a separate feature. It can be turned on manually or on a schedule, and while it is active most banners are silenced and notifications go straight to Notification Center. Alarms, reminders and apps you add as exceptions are treated differently. Do Not Disturb controls interruptions, not the content shown on the lock screen, so it does not hide details by itself.
Troubleshooting when the switch behaves unexpectedly
- You cannot find the switch. Confirm you are in System > Notifications and that the app is listed under Notifications from apps and other senders. Apps that do not send notifications through Windows may not appear there.
- An app still shows details. Check that the switch is on for that specific app. Each app has its own setting, so a change to one app does not affect another.
- The menu looks different from these steps. Microsoft’s notification guide does not publish a build-by-build matrix in the material reviewed for this article. Check your installed Windows 11 version under Settings > System > About, and confirm the app itself is up to date.
- Notifications stopped entirely. Check the app’s notifications-on setting and whether Do Not Disturb is active.
Checklist before you finish
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Select each app that handles sensitive messages.
- Turn on Hide content when notifications are on lock screen for each one.
- Lock the PC and confirm that a test notification shows no details.
