For a known cookie banner, hide its specific element at capture time with a narrowly targeted CSS rule, or use a screenshot API with a banner-removal option or custom CSS. If the screenshot is meant to test consent behavior, do not just hide the banner: use its real controls and verify the resulting state. A clean-looking image alone does not prove that the site recorded consent.
Choose the right method for the job
- One known banner: use capture-time CSS in Playwright or a screenshot API. Identify the selector on the target site; selectors are not universal.
- Consent behavior under test: interact with the site’s accept, reject, or preferences controls and assert the resulting page or stored state. Keep that test separate from visual cleanup.
- Many unrelated sites: a hosted API’s automatic banner handling can save browser setup, but test representative pages and keep a selector-based fallback. Do not assume any service catches every banner.
Playwright recommends explicitly waiting for predictable overlays and dismissing them as part of the normal test flow rather than relying on page.addLocatorHandler(). Its documentation also warns that locator handlers can affect focus and mouse position. Hide a known banner with Playwright
Inspect the page, find the banner’s specific selector, and inject a rule only for the screenshot. Playwright’s Page API supports screenshot-time styling:

Workflow for a repeatable clean capture
- Decide what the image is for. A clean visual image, a visual-regression baseline, and a consent test require different handling. Do not use banner removal as a substitute for consent testing.
- Identify the banner on the actual page. Inspect its markup and verify a site-specific selector. A selector working on one site does not mean it works across unrelated sites.

Troubleshoot banners that remain or captures that look wrong
- The banner is still visible: the selector may not match the live markup, or the service’s automatic detection may not recognize that implementation. Inspect the page and use a narrower, verified CSS selector as a fallback.
- Page content disappears: the selector or rule may be too broad. Target the banner container rather than generic classes or dialog elements, then inspect the screenshot again.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: check that navigation has completed and the page’s content has had time to render. Adjust the wait condition or delay supported by your chosen tool; do not assume hiding the banner fixes a load failure.
- Full-page output misses content: confirm that full-page capture is enabled and that lazy-loaded content has had an opportunity to load.
- The consent test passes despite no recorded choice: hiding an element is not an interaction. Exercise the actual controls and assert the state the site records.
- An overlay handler makes a test flaky: a handler can alter focus or mouse state. For a predictable overlay, handle it explicitly in the test flow; for screenshot-only cleanup, use capture-time styling.
