The claim that Airtel Africa, Dangote Cement, MTN Nigeria and six others accounted for N122.56 trillion of NGX market capitalisation is not verified by the available dated reports: they do not establish that figure’s date or the nine companies included. The closest sourced snapshots are different: nine companies worth at least N5 trillion each were valued at N107.59 trillion on 31 August 2026, while a separate July report put ten companies at N112.902 trillion on 10 July.
What the reports establish
The figures below describe distinct observations, not a continuous series. The August report defines its nine-company group by a N5 trillion minimum market value; the July report covers ten companies, and the cited report does not establish the same selection rule. Neither should be treated as the source of the N122.56 trillion headline.

| Observation date | Companies counted | Group value | Total NGX market value | Selection rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 July 2026 | 10 | N112.902 trillion | N156.44 trillion | Not stated in the THISDAY report |
| 31 August 2026 | 9 | N107.59 trillion | N157.74 trillion | Each company worth at least N5 trillion, according to Nairametrics |
The denominator in each case is the reported total NGX equity market capitalisation for that date. Dividing the group value by that total gives about 72.2% in July and 68.2% in August. These are approximate shares calculated from the published figures, not additional figures quoted by the reports.

Which companies led the August snapshot?
Market News Nigeria identified the three largest companies in its 31 August 2026 snapshot as follows:
#1 Best Overall
- Airtel Africa: N23.68 trillion
- Dangote Cement: N17.45 trillion
- MTN Nigeria: N16.94 trillion
Those are report figures for the August observation, not current market values. The cited Market News Nigeria report does not, in the material available here, provide the complete nine-company list; the names of the remaining six are therefore not established here. Read the report.
What N107.59 trillion means—and does not mean
Nairametrics reported that the nine companies’ combined market value increased by N46.69 trillion between 31 December 2025 and 31 August 2026. Market capitalisation is the market value of listed shares, so this change is not a measure of revenue, profit, assets, or cash raised by the companies. Share prices and share counts can change, which means market capitalisation can move as well.

Why the N122.56 trillion claim needs a date and list
The headline wording implies nine companies in total, but the located reports do not confirm a N122.56 trillion value for that group. Without its observation date, constituent companies, and the market-capitalisation denominator, the figure cannot be compared reliably with the dated July and August snapshots. In particular, the August report’s N5 trillion inclusion threshold should not be assumed to define the headline’s nine companies.
