For a clean directory thumbnail, hide the specific consent banner in the browser context used to capture it—usually with a narrowly targeted CSS rule. That changes the screenshot’s appearance; it does not record or prove consent. If the thumbnail needs to reflect a real accept, reject, or settings choice, interact with that control and verify the resulting page state instead.
Choose the right outcome before changing the page
A cookie banner covering a screenshot is a rendering problem only when the thumbnail is meant to show the page without the overlay. If the image is meant to document a consent journey or first visit, the banner is part of what you need to capture.
- Clean visual thumbnail: Hide the known banner at capture time with a specific selector. This alters the captured image, not the visitor’s consent preference.
- Thumbnail after a real preference: Use the intended accept, reject, or settings control in the browser flow, then confirm that the page reached the expected state. Do not click “accept” when the desired outcome is rejection or no choice.
- Consent-interface QA: Leave the banner visible for a first-visit test, or exercise the intended path and assert the resulting state. Playwright’s page API documents screenshot handling and handlers for unexpected overlays: Playwright Page API.
The distinction matters legally and technically. GDPR Article 7(3) says, “It shall be as easy to withdraw as to give consent”; that passage concerns withdrawal and reinforces why hiding interface pixels is not the same thing as changing or verifying a consent choice. See GDPR Article 7.
Hide a banner in a self-managed browser capture
In a browser automation workflow such as Playwright, first identify the actual banner element on the target site, then apply CSS in the capture context before taking the screenshot. There is no universal selector: consent tools and their markup differ, and a banner may appear after the initial page load.
- Open a representative target in the same browser context and region your directory uses for thumbnails.
- Inspect the banner and identify a selector that targets the banner itself, not a broad page region. Avoid guessing a generic selector that might match legitimate content.
- Apply a narrow capture-time rule, for example
display: none !importanton the identified element. In Playwright, the page screenshot is produced throughpage.screenshot(); see the Page API for the relevant page methods and overlay handling. - Wait for the relevant page state, including delayed consent UI, before capture. Inspect the rendered result to confirm that the rule matched.
- Review the resulting thumbnail for a leftover backdrop, scroll lock, layout shift, blocked content, or content hidden by an overly broad selector. Repeat with representative sites and consent platforms before applying the rule across the directory.
CSS concealment is a visual cleanup step. If a real preference must be represented, use the site’s intended control and verify the resulting state rather than hiding the interface.

Use a managed capture service for sites you do not control
For a directory that captures many unrelated domains, maintaining selectors and browser automation can be operationally demanding. A hosted capture service may provide maintained handling for known consent platforms and a custom-selector fallback, but support is not universal and each target still needs validation.
Browserless documents a blockConsentModals=true option for screenshot endpoints and recommends custom selectors for sites its built-in handling does not cover. Its examples include common consent-management patterns and click-based dismissal. Those are documented vendor capabilities, not a guarantee that every banner will be handled or that a particular consent outcome is compliant. See Browserless cookie-consent documentation.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen deciding between self-managed Playwright and hosted capture, compare what each approach changes (image only or actual browser state), coverage and fallback controls, how easily you can inspect failures, the work of maintaining the capture stack, and whether the thumbnail merely illustrates a page or must demonstrate a tested consent path.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners before the shot and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. These handling steps clean up the image and should not be treated as evidence of a consent preference.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, replace the target URL with a directory site you want to capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; each response indicates the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot thumbnails with a banner still visible
- The selector did not match: Re-inspect the live page and confirm the element is present in the capture context. Site markup varies, so replace guessed selectors with a verified, narrowly scoped one.
- The banner appears after capture: Wait for the consent interface or a relevant selector before taking the screenshot; initial page load does not guarantee delayed UI has appeared.
- A dark or dim layer remains: Inspect for a separate backdrop element and handle it specifically. Check that the page is not still locked to scrolling.
- Page content disappears too: Narrow the CSS rule. A selector aimed at a wrapper or shared class can hide more than the consent panel.
- The screenshot looks different across sites or regions: Reproduce the target in the same browser context and region used by the directory. Validate more than one representative site and consent platform before deploying a shared rule.
- You need proof of a choice, not a clean image: Do not use CSS concealment. Activate the intended control and verify the resulting page and preference state.
