What is appropriate depends on the species and location: use local guidance for viewing, pets, boating, and wildlife rescue.
How to behave around penguins and their habitat
Penguins may be especially vulnerable on land while nesting or moulting. A moulting bird can look ragged without being sick. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) puts the basic rule plainly: “Leave penguins alone. Usually scruffy birds are simply moulting.” DOC’s penguin guidance also identifies disturbance at nesting sites as a threat.

- Keep a respectful distance from penguins, nests, burrows, and the routes birds use to reach the sea. Do not chase, crowd, touch, or try to draw them closer for a photograph.
- Keep dogs away from penguins and nesting areas. Leash requirements vary, and sensitive sites may prohibit dogs altogether; check the rules for the specific reserve or beach.
- Use designated viewing areas and obey signs and staff instructions. Ōamaru Penguins describes visitor education and managed tourism as part of its conservation approach.
- If boating near a colony, follow local speed and access rules and keep a careful lookout. NSW guidance warns that little penguins may surface unexpectedly, including in groups.
These actions reduce avoidable disturbance and injury; they do not address every pressure on a colony. Threats vary by place and species and can include habitat degradation, predators, fisheries bycatch, discarded fishing line, changes in food linked to climate, disease, or disturbance.
Reduce rubbish and fishing hazards
Put litter in appropriate bins and take your own rubbish away if bins are full. Fishing line and hooks can injure coastal wildlife. New South Wales guidance specifically identifies them as hazards for Manly’s little penguins: NSW penguin guidance.

- Vivid penguin shape doll is suitable for bedroom, living room, home, office, nursery bed and every place you like.
- The penguin is about 8.6 inch Tall. Perfect size for playing and hugging.
- Suitable for age 3+. Hand wash recommend, with cold water and mild soap.
Remove discarded line or hooks only if you can do so safely and lawfully, without entering a restricted area or disturbing wildlife. Do not attempt to free a bird caught in gear yourself; contact the local wildlife authority or rescue service for instructions.
What to do if a penguin looks injured or unwell
- Observe from a distance. A scruffy appearance can be normal during moulting, so do not assume a bird is ill based on its feathers alone.
- Do not feed or handle it. DOC advises against feeding an emaciated penguin and notes that seabird rehabilitation requires specialist knowledge.
- Contact local trained responders if it is clearly injured or in immediate danger. Give them the exact location and describe what you observed, then follow their directions. Rescue contacts differ by region; use the relevant local authority or wildlife organization rather than relying on a hotline from another country.
- Leave dead birds in place unless local authorities say otherwise. DOC notes that community groups may count dead seabirds.
For example, DOC provides guidance for New Zealand, while NSW directs people to its own local rescue contacts. These procedures are not interchangeable, so check the current instructions where you are.

Support conservation that matches the place and need
Before donating, volunteering, or buying a conservation-support product, check whether the organization works with the species, colony, or threat you care about and what it says your support enables. Look for concrete work such as habitat restoration, predator management, nest protection, monitoring, rehabilitation, research, or policy action.
| Support option | What the cited organization describes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Volunteer locally | NSW describes a trained penguin warden role. | Ask the relevant local authority whether recruitment is open and what training is required. |
| Support species-focused work | New Zealand DOC names the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust and Forest & Bird; DOC’s hoiho page describes partner work in habitat restoration and threat management. | Check the organization’s current projects, location, and how donations are used. |
| Support a colony’s conservation program | Ōamaru Penguins describes predator control, nest boxes, monitoring, rehabilitation, and tracking. It says adoptions and gift-shop purchases support its conservation work. | Confirm what the current program funds. An adoption is a way to support conservation, not custody of a live penguin. |
| Make a symbolic adoption | WWF-Australia describes adoption support for broader conservation, including food sources, marine protected areas, climate action, and plastic pollution. | Read the current program terms and understand that support is for wider conservation work, not care of an individual bird. |
The IUCN Penguin Specialist Group is a science and planning authority, but its reviewed page does not establish a public donation or affiliate program. Do not assume that following or citing a specialist group is the same as donating to it.

Why local action matters
There is no single checklist that fits every penguin colony. DOC’s New Zealand guidance lists threats including habitat degradation, predators, fisheries bycatch, discarded nylon line, climate-related changes in food, and nesting disturbance. Its species-specific hoiho guidance also discusses disease, starvation, dog attacks during moulting, and incidental capture in set nets. These examples describe pressures documented for the relevant species and places; they should not be generalized to every penguin population.
Conservation programs may combine several approaches. Global Penguin Society reported that after El Pedral received wildlife refuge designation, nests increased from 6 to 2,600 in an outcome it reported in 2011. That is an organization-reported result from one site, not a prediction for other colonies.
