They do not directly reveal the planet’s deep interior. A trail can show where a rock traveled and how it interacted with nearby soil; it usually cannot establish exactly when it moved or what triggered it.
How to read a boulder track
A boulder moving down a dusty slope can leave a line of depressions behind it. The track may connect a source area on the slope to the boulder’s resting place. Continuous marks are consistent with rolling; separated marks can indicate that the rock bounced along part of its route. Track shape, spacing, length, contrast, surrounding terrain, and the final boulder position together provide clues to its movement.

Orbital images taken at different times can establish that a track appeared during an interval. In a NASA/JPL comparison of a crater wall, an image from November 14, 2003, and another from December 4, 2004, show more than a dozen new tracks. The images establish that the rocks moved sometime between those observations, not the exact date or whether all the movements happened together. NASA/JPL’s 2005 image account reported Mars Orbiter Camera image resolution ranging from 0.5 to 12 meters per pixel for this account; that range describes the imagery, not a universal resolution for Mars observations.
What tracks reveal about the surface
Loose material and rock movement
NASA/JPL explains that geologists can use boulder tracks to infer physical properties of the fine-grained debris a rock encountered. The trail records an interaction with the near-surface material, rather than a direct measurement of the soil’s full composition or the planet beneath it. NASA/JPL’s boulder-track account discusses how researchers use tracks as clues to this debris.

Brightness and bouncing
Tracks are not always dark. In one HiRISE example, NASA interprets discontinuous bright spots as marks made when a boulder bounced. NASA offered brighter shallow subsurface soil exposed by the movement as a possible explanation for the bright trail, not a settled explanation that applies to every track. For that particular warm, equator-facing slope in summer, NASA ruled out ice as the explanation. NASA’s image description shows why brightness needs to be interpreted in its local context.
Layered bedrock and erosion at Eos Chasma
At Eos Chasma, NASA describes boulders along horizons in exposed layered bedrock, which are thought to correspond to individual lava flows. Their tracks record movement away from the eroding canyon rim and down the slope. Some tracks at this site extend up to a kilometer. NASA interprets them as evidence that erosion of the rim continues today. NASA’s Eos Chasma image description presents both the geological setting and the limits of that interpretation.

Processes that can destabilize rocks
NASA describes frost heaving and temperature-driven expansion and contraction as contributors to dry mass wasting at Eos Chasma. Repeated daily and seasonal temperature cycles can gradually destabilize rocks perched near an edge. These are mechanisms that can contribute to erosion; they do not identify the trigger for any one observed rockfall. NASA’s account of the site connects these processes with the landscape.

What the tracks cannot establish
The trigger for an individual rockfall
A slope supplies gravity for downslope movement, but a photograph of the resulting trail may not reveal what dislodged the rock. In the crater-wall comparison, NASA/JPL said the trigger was unknown; a marsquake or strong winds were possibilities, not established causes. The images also could not determine whether the new tracks formed in one event or at different times across the roughly 13-month interval. NASA/JPL’s account distinguishes the observed movement from its uncertain cause.

The age of a track
Visibility alone does not provide a precise date. NASA notes that wind quickly erased tracks made by the Opportunity rover, while deeper boulder gouges may last longer than shallow wheel compressions. Tracks can also fade at different rates in dustier and less-dusty places. A visible boulder trail is evidence of movement, but its preservation depends on local conditions. NASA/JPL’s track comparison illustrates how preservation varies.
Mars’s deep interior
Boulder tracks concern surface and near-surface processes: a rock’s route, its interaction with loose material, and erosion of nearby slopes or cliffs. They do not independently establish the composition or structure of Mars’s deep interior. Conclusions about the interior require other kinds of evidence; they cannot be drawn from a photograph of a rock trail.

How to distinguish boulder tracks from dust-devil marks
Not every line on a Martian slope records a moving rock. Dust devils can remove a light-colored dust layer and expose darker sand, leaving dark lines. Boulder trails instead consist of depressions and other marks associated with a rock’s downslope path, sometimes ending near the resting boulder. Shape, slope context, and whether a boulder lies at the apparent end of the trail help distinguish the two. NASA’s description of Martian dust-devil tracks explains the contrasting mechanism.
