Start by asking what your child will miss about the club, then listen before trying to fix it. It may be the activity, a friend, a trusted leader, the weekly routine, or simply having a familiar place to go. The best next step depends on what mattered most to them.
Listen before looking for a replacement
Choose a quiet moment and keep the opening simple: “I heard the club is closing. What feels hardest about that?” Give your child room to answer in their own way. They might talk straight away, need time, or return to the subject later.

Acknowledge the particular thing they name. Explain what is known—and what is not
Use clear language suited to your child’s age. Tell them what has been confirmed about the closure, what you do not yet know, and when you can check again. Don’t speculate about the reason or say the club will reopen unless that is confirmed.
Your child may ask the same question more than once. Answer calmly and revisit the conversation if new information becomes available. General change guidance supports giving children realistic information, but there is no established club-closure script that every family should follow.

Preserve the parts they want to keep
Ask whether your child would like help staying in touch with friends or a trusted club leader. If they are comfortable with it, you could exchange contact details with another family, ask organizers whether a final gathering is planned, or ask whether they can share information about achievements or another venue. These are possibilities, not services every club will offer. Follow privacy and safeguarding rules when arranging contact between children.
If the activity itself is what your child misses, explore alternatives together without presenting one as a replacement for the original. Depending on what is available locally, possibilities could include another group, a school activity, a library or community program, or an informal version at home.

Choose using your child’s priorities
Ask what would make an alternative appealing or manageable. You might consider:
- Whether the activity, friends, or a trusted adult could continue.
- Whether the day and time work for your family.
- Travel, cost, accessibility, and any support your child needs.
- Whether your child wants to try something now, later, or not at all.
Your child does not have to decide immediately. A low-pressure trial may help if they are interested, but it is also reasonable to leave the question open for a while.

Make the former club time predictable
If the club met at a regular time, agree on a simple plan for that slot. It might be a quiet evening, time with a friend, one activity to try, or no plan at first. Keeping other dependable routines steady where possible can make a change easier to manage.

Adapt support to the child
Children differ in what they value about a group and how much time they need to adjust. A child who seems unaffected may not want to talk yet; another may need several conversations. Don’t impose a timetable or assume that a particular reaction means something is wrong.
For a child who finds changes in routine or expectations difficult, ask what would make the transition easier. Advance notice, a visual plan, or a gradual introduction to a different activity may help. If your child already works with professionals, ask them for advice tailored to the child’s needs. Know when to seek extra support
Being upset about a club closing does not by itself indicate a mental-health disorder. Consider talking with your child’s pediatrician or GP if distress persists or interferes with everyday life, such as sleep, eating, school, relationships, usual activities, or self-care. School staff or a counselor may also be able to help, depending on the concern. Action for Children advises speaking with a GP or school if you are worried; this is general guidance, not a clinical threshold specific to club closures.

Why this advice is careful about the comparison
Guidance on general transitions and social change is the closest fit for a club closure. NICE’s 2022 evidence review on supporting children during transitions concerns educational transitions, not the closure of a club. American Academy of Pediatrics guidance on bereavement can inform broad ideas such as routines and seeking help, but death-related loss is a different and more severe experience. Children’s responses to a club closing will vary, so there is no single timetable or response that fits everyone.
