The BlackBerry Passport runs BlackBerry 10, not Android. It can install and open some Android apps through a compatibility runtime, but that is not the same as installing Android itself—and an app that opens may still lack features it expects from unsupported services.
What “Android on the Passport” means
The Passport’s operating system remains BlackBerry 10 (BB10). BlackBerry’s documentation describes running repackaged Android application packages, or APKs, within BB10; it does not describe converting the handset into a native Android phone. BlackBerry’s SDK terms likewise distinguish the BB10 runtime from Android itself: APKs may run, but their use of unsupported services can affect behavior. BlackBerry SDK License Agreement, Schedule 4

In practical terms, “can it run Android?” has two different answers: some Android apps can be installed and opened, but the Passport does not thereby become an Android OS device. BlackBerry’s documentation does not establish native Android installation as an official or supported Passport capability.

How Android app installation worked
The Passport owner’s guide documented several routes for obtaining apps: BlackBerry World, Amazon Appstore, and third-party websites or mobile market apps. For an APK downloaded from another source, the guide says to locate and open it in File Manager. These are historical instructions, not confirmation that those stores, websites, or catalogs remain available today. - Obtain an Android app through a source that is still accessible and suitable for your device.
- If you downloaded an APK, open File Manager and find the downloaded file.
- Open the APK to attempt installation, then launch the app and check the functions you actually need.
Successful installation or launch only establishes that the app could be installed or opened. It does not establish that sign-in, maps, notifications, payments, or other features work correctly.
Why compatibility is limited
Android apps may rely on operating-system services or APIs that BB10 does not provide. BlackBerry’s Passport guide warns that some Android apps use services unsupported by BB10 and says the system may substitute alternatives; it gives mapping services as an example. A substitute is not a promise of identical data, coverage, or behavior. The SDK agreement also notes that BB10 may replace a service and the data it would otherwise return. Compatibility therefore depends on more than whether an APK installs. An app can fail to install, open but malfunction, or work only in part if it depends on unavailable services or a newer Android environment than the BB10 runtime supports. The cited documentation gives no measured percentage of Android apps that work, so there is no substantiated universal compatibility rate or guarantee for a particular app.
Risks of installing apps from outside BlackBerry World
The Passport guide cautions that apps obtained outside BlackBerry World may not have been reviewed by BlackBerry and could put the device and personal data at risk. An APK’s successful installation is not evidence that its source is trustworthy. Be especially cautious with apps that request access to accounts, messages, files, or other sensitive information.

Can you install Android OS on the Passport?
That is a separate question from running Android apps. BB10’s documented APK runtime does not install Android OS. A third-party page called Android on Passport describes a project to bring Android OS to the device, but its page displayed “COMING SOON”; it does not establish a finished, supported release. App compatibility is only one part of using a legacy handset. BlackBerry’s end-of-life FAQ warned that BB10 devices would no longer reliably function through carrier or Wi-Fi connections after the termination of services. That lifecycle warning is not a guarantee about every carrier or every current connection: results depend on region, carrier, network bands, and the services you need. Check those details with the carrier and for the specific device before relying on it. BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS Services FAQ — End of Life
