Heat water in a saucepan on the stovetop
- Choose a saucepan or pot intended for stovetop use and add the amount of water you need.
- Set the pan on a working burner and heat the water while monitoring it.
- When it reaches the temperature you want, turn off the heat. Handle the hot pan carefully and keep clear of escaping steam when pouring.
This is a practical alternative for making a drink or completing a household task. You do not need to bring the water to a boil unless your recipe or another specific purpose calls for it.

If you need to disinfect water, bring it to a rolling boil
Hot water for a beverage and water treated to reduce germs are different goals. For emergency disinfection of clear water, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) instructs: “Bring clear water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes).” CDC emergency water guidance (September 19, 2024) describes boiling water in a pot on a stove; its stated times are operational instructions, not a comparison of appliances.
Prepare cloudy water first
If the water is cloudy, CDC advises filtering it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter, or letting it settle and drawing off the clear water. Then bring the clearer water to a rolling boil for the time specified above.

Cool and store treated water safely
After boiling, let the water cool. Store it in clean, sanitized containers with tight covers, as CDC recommends.
Do not rely on boiling for chemical contamination
Boiling or other disinfection cannot make water containing fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive materials safe. Use bottled water or another safe source and contact your health department for advice.

What about other appliances?
A coffee filter mentioned in CDC guidance is a way to pre-filter cloudy water; it does not establish that a coffee maker reliably boils water or disinfects it. The available guidance also does not rank coffee makers, immersion heaters, camping stoves, or other devices for speed, energy use, temperature control, or cost. If using another appliance for ordinary hot water, follow its manufacturer’s instructions; do not assume it is suitable for emergency disinfection.
