Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Reduce the risk of a malicious extension or deceptive download by giving extensions access only where needed, keeping browser warnings and download checks on, and using secure-connection protections. These controls are layers, not guarantees: a permission prompt or store listing does not prove an extension is safe, and HTTPS does not prove a site is benign.
Start by limiting what extensions can access
An extension that can read or change data on all websites may see information on pages you visit. Some tools, such as password managers or page-modifying extensions, need site access to work; broad access without a clear reason is a reason to pause. Review requested permissions before installing, and do not treat a warning as proof of danger—or the absence of one as proof of safety. Google explains what permission warnings mean in its Chrome Web Store permissions guide.

Chrome
- Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Select an extension’s Details page and find its site-access setting.
- Choose On click if it should run only when you activate it, or On specific sites and add only the sites it needs. Use On all sites only when its function genuinely requires it.
- From the extensions list, switch off an extension you do not need or remove it. Google’s extension management instructions describe these controls.
Microsoft Edge
- Open Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Use the extension’s site-access control to allow access on click, on the current site, or on all sites.
- Review whether it is allowed in InPrivate and whether it can access file URLs; leave those permissions off unless you have a specific need.
Microsoft’s Edge site-access instructions cover the available choices.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Open Add-ons Manager to inspect an extension’s requested permissions. Firefox also lets you turn optional permissions on or off, so grant those only when you want the related feature. Mozilla’s optional-permissions guide explains how to manage them. Mozilla Recommended Extensions receive security review, automated checks, monitoring, and periodic reviews; that status is a useful vetting signal, not a guarantee that an extension is risk-free. Keep site and download warnings enabled
Browser warnings can help identify known unsafe sites, suspicious downloads, or other risks. They cannot catch everything, so stop if a warning appears rather than clicking through simply to reach a page or file.
Chrome Safe Browsing
Chrome’s Standard protection checks sites, extensions, and downloads against lists of unsafe sites and downloads. Enhanced protection adds warnings about extensions not trusted by the Chrome Web Store and checks for additional risks. It also sends more browsing-related data to Google in real time, so weigh that privacy tradeoff when choosing it. Details are in Google’s Safe Browsing privacy explanation and Chrome safety and security settings.

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen in Edge
SmartScreen checks sites and downloads and warns about suspicious pages and files. It is a reputation and warning feature, not a pop-up blocker. For the feature’s scope, see Microsoft’s SmartScreen explanation.

Use HTTPS upgrades, but do not confuse encryption with trust
HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and a site when the connection is properly secured. It does not establish that the site is legitimate or that a download is safe. Edge HTTPS-First Mode attempts to upgrade connections to HTTPS where possible and can warn about insecure public sites. See Microsoft’s HTTPS-First Mode guidance.

Review extensions and browser health periodically
Remove extensions you no longer use, and revisit site permissions when an extension’s purpose changes. Chrome Safety Check can surface browser update reminders, potentially harmful extensions, and unused site permissions. Keeping the browser updated matters because browser protections and security fixes depend on using a supported, current version; Chrome’s safety settings guidance describes Safety Check.

Edge enhanced security mode applies added protections against memory-related vulnerabilities. Its Balanced and Strict settings offer different levels of protection; Strict can cause compatibility problems on some sites. Try stronger settings where the security benefit fits your needs, and be prepared to adjust if essential sites stop working. Microsoft describes the modes and their tradeoffs in its enhanced security guide.

Organizations may also consider browser isolation as part of a broader managed security approach. CISA discusses browser security and malvertising defenses for federal agencies in its browser security guide. Isolation is an organizational option, not a substitute for careful extension permissions and browser protections.
