If your spinning reel is laying coils, throwing loops, or forming wind knots, start by checking the line and how it is being used—not by replacing the reel. Overfilled or incorrectly installed line, line memory, a lure that spins, and a binding line roller can all cause trouble. Clear any trapped line, correct the likely cause, then stop and seek service if a reel part appears seized or damaged.
First, identify what is tangling
Line twist and casting tangles often look alike, but the clues point to different causes. Shimano lists incorrect spooling and a binding line-roller bearing or bushing as causes of twist. Zebco also identifies a spinning lure as a source of twist, and links casting tangles to overfilled spools and line memory.

- Loops or coils form while you are putting new line on: check the supply-spool orientation and winding method.
- Line springs off the spool or catches during casts: check for overfilling and line memory.
- Line twists during or after casting: check how it was spooled, whether the lure spins, and whether the line roller turns freely.
- Line is trapped under the spool or a reel part will not move: clear the line carefully; a binding or seized component may need service.
Free a tangle beneath the spool
Zebco’s spinning-reel manual says to remove the spool and untangle line caught beneath it. Do not yank a tight knot: pulling hard can make it tighter or damage the line. If the line is kinked, frayed, or will not come free cleanly, cut out the damaged section and replace it if needed.
Check whether the spool is overfilled
A spool filled too close to its rim can release loose coils that catch during casting. Zebco’s troubleshooting and spinning-combo setup guidance both recommend stopping about 1/8 inch below the spool lip or rim. Treat that as Zebco’s setup guidance, not a universal specification; use your reel’s manual if it gives a different fill level.

Re-spool line without adding coils
Follow the instructions for your specific reel and line. Spool orientation is not universal: Zebco’s troubleshooting page says the supply line should feed off in the same direction the rotor turns, while its setup guide recommends laying the supply spool flat, matching the direction line comes off the reel, and watching for coils. Shimano separately notes that reels with slow or super-slow oscillation must have line wound on using the reel.
- Set up the supply spool according to the reel maker’s instructions and thread the line through the rod guides as directed.
- Keep light tension on the line as you wind it onto the reel.
- Watch the line between your fingers. If it starts looping or coiling while you spool, Zebco says to flip the supply spool and continue.
- Stop at the fill level specified for your reel; Zebco’s general guidance is about 1/8 inch below the rim.
Remove twist already in the line
Zebco lists replacing the line or playing it out without a lure as options for removing twist. If the line is otherwise in good condition, playing it out can avoid replacing it; cut out damaged line rather than relying on that method to repair a kink.

Check whether the lure is spinning
A lure that rotates as you retrieve it can twist line. Check that it is running true. For inline spinners, Zebco recommends a ball-bearing swivel. A swivel is specific to that rig; it will not correct overfilling, poor spooling, or a binding reel component.
Change how you reel under load
Zebco warns against turning the handle while a fish is pulling line against the drag: doing so builds twist and can lead to tangles or reel malfunction. Let the drag give line when it needs to, and resume winding when you can retrieve line without cranking against that pull. When retrieving normally, avoid winding obvious slack onto the spool.

Check the roller and bail for mechanical trouble
The line roller guides line onto the spool as the bail turns. Shimano lists a binding roller bearing or bushing as a possible cause of twist. If the roller has stopped spinning, Shimano says saltwater intrusion may have caused it to seize and recommends sending the reel to Shimano Service for inspection. Do not force the roller or lubricate a sealed component without checking the instructions for your model.
If the bail will not close, Shimano also lists a bent bail wire or corrosion and debris at the bail pivots as possible causes. Avoid bending parts or dismantling the reel unless its model-specific instructions call for it. If a component is visibly damaged, stuck, or still binding after you have cleared debris, arrange service inspection.

Match replacement line to the reel
If the line is damaged or replacement is the simplest way to remove persistent twist, choose a line type and rating suitable for your reel and intended use. Follow the reel maker’s instructions for installing it and use the coil check while spooling; a new line can tangle too if it is installed incorrectly.
